Default Lucinda Williams on Letterman

Anyone catch her performance on Letterman last night? I'm a very recent Lucinda convert, having heard her on Sirius Disorder and having picked up a used CD (World Without Tears) recently.

So, since I'm a very recent convert, I don't have much in the way of a frame of reference, but I thought she sucked. I wish she would stick to what she does best - the softer, mellower, emotional sultry sound of songs like "Righteously". When she tries to go "hard", like she did last night, she sounds like a wounded screetching cat. And the song itself, I thought, was repetitive and formulaic "I changed the car I drive... I changed the clothes I wear..." yeah, yeah, we get it. You changed everything so you can't be found by your ex.

I'm sure diehard Lucinda fans will flame me bigtime, but just wondered what others thought.

I've been a devout musicologist for over 40 years, and IMO, "Car Wheels On a Road" is one of the top 10 records of all time by any artist in any genre. Run, don't, don't walk, to buy this CD.

I bought Lucinda William's self-titled CD in the late 80's and have been hooked ever since. I've seen her live twice and depending on the set she performs, can either be very good or very bad. She does not have a very strong stage presence.

I've heard she has a problem on stage, stage fright probably, however I can listen to her all day. "car wheels" is an awsome CD. On Outlaw Country I've been turned on to a couple of songs I haven't heard before. Always a trill. Love her.

Word. The only live performances I've seen are the letterman appearance and a clip you can watch online as a teaser to buy the DVD of her on Austin City Limits. Both sucked and she had NO stage presence, just stood there staring straight ahead the whole time.

Default Lucinda live...

NPR's All Songs Considered broadcasts the occasional live concert. Here's a link to a recent Lucinda show at the 9:30 Club in D.C....

It's pretty good! Look around, cause there are several good shows available for streaming. There's also a Son Volt show from October that's available as a free download...
