Default No More Folktown?

So Folktown is being deleted? This sucks! Folktown is my favorite channel.

Will I be ok switching over to the new Coffee House? Or is the Coffee House going to be all John Mayer and Jack Johnson crap?

What a disappointing announcement...

I'm also upset by this move. I doubt Coffee House will be just a re-naming of Folktown, although I'm sure Sirius will try and steer Folktown listeners over there. Is Coffee House going to play Phils Ochs and Tim Harden? Oh, well..I'll jst have to fire up the MP3 player to get my Folk music fix...

My guess is that they'll structure it like XM's Starbucks channel, which can be interesting (when they're not playing Jack Johnson), but is not folk. I'm disappointed because Sirius's folk channel was one of the major reasons I subscribed to both services, since it is so much better.

Yea, saying i'm dissapointed is an understatement. I feel like I've been abandonded by Sirius. I had the feeling that Folktown was on of the more popular channels, am I wrong?

I'm sure what there doing with this new channel is putting on a lot of acoustic rock, with a few folk cuts to "keep them old bastards happy." I don't know where they get the idea that they have to attract younger listeners to satellite radio, yes I'm over 50, but my money is just as good.

I had a feeling that this kind of thing would happen when they hired Mel as CEO, he obviously still has the commercial radio mindset that younger is better.

Thanks for allowing me to vent, I am pissed!!!

Chalk me up as another unhappy listener at the new lineup. Lots of stuff was played on Folktown you don't hear anywhere else -- ANYWHERE.

All my folkie friends that I convinced to sign up for Sirius are going to be so *pissed* at me...

I listened to Folktown from time to time and could never fall in love with it. I liked many of the artists there, perhaps Coffee House will be a better format?

Sorry to those of you that were Folktown Fans, I know it sucks to loose a channel you like :\

I don't know Tom Paxton personally, but I was at one of his concerts last winter and it was great. His concert schedule can be found at http://www.tompaxton.com/sked.html.

One of the main reasons I decided to go with the Lifetime subscription when I bought Sirius last week was for Folktown! And now they're already taking it off. Damn!!!!

Actually, all we know now is that Folktown is not on the published brochures. It is still possible that this is a mistake, at least thinking that gives me hope.

I have an e-mail in to The Kennedys at their non-Sirius address, asking about this and what the plans are for their show. I know they are away until next week, so I'm not expecting an immediate reply. If and when I do get a reply, I'll post any relevant information here.

Folktown is on the list of cancelled stations that www.siriusbackstage.com put up on its site. I hope that you hear from the Kennedys that this is a mistake!

Well, I didn't hear from the Kennedys, but I did get this BS from Sirius Customer Care:

Thank you for writing us here at SIRIUS. We appreciate your comments about our music programming. SIRIUS remains fully dedicated to providing an unparalleled variety of music programming on our 65 commercial free music channels in virtually every genre. Our channels
are designed to please listeners of every listening preference.

Although our Folktown channel was a popular channel, all of our programming changes are based on customer feedback like yours. Many of the artists that you did hear on Folktown will still be making appearances on the new Coffee House Channel, although we do understand that this is not a complete substitute, we also did not want to completely remove folk from our programming.

BS indeed! I'll bet anything that the new Coffee House channel will be more like Musak you'd hear in Starbucks that it will be ANYTHING like the coffehouses of the folk years. Variety? What variety? Seems that the Sirius music channels are definitely top-heavy with rock and hip-hop and don't represent ethnic/folk/world music well at all. And now there will be even less. Bummer.

Yes, and I find ludicrous their claim that this is happening because of customer feedback. I doubt anyone writes to them to request that a channel be eliminated. If you don’t like it, just don’t listen. Perhaps a few right-wingers wrote in protest of the political content, but I doubt there were many.

If this is to be reversed, they need tons more feedback from us. And they need it to continue once the initial furor dies down. That’s what got the new age music people their channel back. And I congratulate them for a job well done.

In the meantime, a good source for on-line folk music (at least when they’re not in a pedge period) is http://www.wumb.org. Please consider joining if you become a regular listener after Sept 29 (Interestingly a few days after the Boston Folk Festival sponsored by WUMB). Another source is http://www.hober.com.
