I too, am really disappointed at the lost of Folktown. I gave Coffee House a chance and it just makes me sad. It is so bad! Since Sirius isn't giving us folk music, I am also looking at my options.

I stumbled on www.folkalley.com It is a great internet site with 24 hour folk music. While it isn't portable, it is an option when you are near a computer. I like it. Now I have to figure out a solution for my car (XM?).

Folk Alley has some demographic information on their site. If it is correct, I think that Sirius has made a big mistake by dropping Folktown. Folk Alley's listeners have significant buying power and are well educated.

Dropping Folktown seems so silly to me in so many ways. Seems like many of the "new" stations are just repacking music that has already been played on Sirius on other stations. Seems like Sirius is getting closer and closer to regular radio. Is this the beginning of the end of what made satellite radio so special in the first place?

That’s exactly what I’ve been saying since they announced the plans for the channel reformat. Eventually the channels in the Rock, Pop, and Country categories will be completely filled with redundancy, and the other categories will be pared down to one channel each.

The only solution I can think of is to get a very inexpensive XM radio and only pay for service by the month.

Try www.Hober.com as it doesn’t require registration. You can listen to it immediately if you have RealPlayer installed. That’s how it used to be, at least - I haven't listened in a while (but probably will start again).

I visited Fred Rodgers' grave
the day that Folktown died.

Default Replacin Folktown

Yes I agree the coffee house is a joke. Poor excuse for a replacement. I am considering moving to XM. Anyone have any comments on the Village on XM?

Certainly not a replacement for Folktown, but the channel in and of itself is a good one. Why must you folks judge it based on the fact that is isn't Folktown. Most of us that voted in the poll on this seem to disagree with you. I think it was those of us that could rise above the shadow of Folktown and give this channel a fair shake that the poll reflected.

IndyKen and anyone that misses Folk music on Sirius,
I agree, Sirius’s idea of replacing Folktown with accoustic rock channel is very lame. I consider it, as well as the loss of SwingStreet and other unique channels, the last straw.

XM has great folk music channels. You can try it for free and judge them for yourself.

MacOSX users wanting to do this can use this widget after signing up for the 3-day trial.

Need a decent, full XM setup at a discount? The Audiovox XR9 with car-kit can be found online for $50 (search for “XCS9”). The XR9 sold at www.myradiostore.com comes with the car kit even though it says that one is required (I called and asked). Use XM’s $50 rebate too and then you’re talking deep discount. Get the home-kit for it at Best Buy for $30. If you’d like a red display rather than a blue one, Sprawl-mart’s own version (Jensen, made by Audiovox) called the JXR9 has it, and can be bought with car-kit for $70 (although the rebate can’t be applied to it).

XM certainly does do a nice job with the acoustic stuff. It's now non existent on Sirius, but I believe it will be back someday. Just a matter of time. But will there be room for acoustic with all the dedicated artist channels ? Sones ? Stringbean ? Elvis ? What a waste of space !!
Sirius is turning into the young male rock and roll Stern satellite and XM is the more diversified musical variety satellite. Time will tell what direction Sirius will head, until then, I'll continue to be a month to month subscriber. Since 9-29-05 I have signed up for 2 XM subs each annual subs.

Durn, I wish I had of researched things a bit closer, didn't know that about XM. I saw "Folktown" listed on Sirius, so that is one of the prime reasons I went the Sirius route. I do hear some other excellant music on Sirius, don't get me wrong, Disorder, some of the Vault's stuff, some of the Outlaw channel, Margaritaville, etc, but folk/acoustic was a strong driver for me when I went Sirius.

Exactly what I thought about Folktown.

Folktown never did much for me. And I collect classic folk recordings, many on vinyl, so don't anybody try to accuse me of "hating" folk music.

Folktown was no great loss. I agree they should bring back a folk channel when bandwidth permits, but they need to do a noticeably better job programming it than they did with Folktown.

Is that all you do "Renaissance Man" is bash every comment that comes in ?
Do you sit there all day and wait to jump on someone who has a comment thay may not agree with yours ?

You have no idea what contempory folk music is if you can honestly say that Folktown was not up to Sirius standards.

Why don't you find something better to do than just be Mister Know It All on every post that comes in here.

Quit your whining. It's very juvenile.

I gave my opinion, which I'm entitled to. I never claimed to know it all, so please stop with your irrelevant accusations.

If you review a substantial number of my posts, you will find that I frequently compliment people and agree with them. I'm not required to agree with you on everything.

The overwhelming majority of Sirius subscribers didn't give a crap about Folktown, and for obvious reasons--it kinda sucked. And I was listening to REAL folk music before you were born.

As TX WJ said--Folktown is gone, get over it.

Yup, just the kind of response I expected out of you. Thanks for proving my point !!! Now be gone.
