Default Sirius reception in SE Connecticut?

Hello all:

I'm having issues with my satellite radio reception. New car (BMW X5, Dealer installed Sirius), in South Eastern Connecticut. If I'm lucky, I get reception maybe 10% of the time. I live right along the I95 Corridor, and don't know what to do.

It's the first time my dealer has installed a satellite radio - they've already tried replacing the antenna, and are now ordering a new receiver. It really is starting to feel like they're shooting in the dark.

I can't grasp the way my radio is (NOT) working. For the last 2 days, for instance, I have no signal at all driving to work (about 15 miles south on I95). On my way home, however, I have had signal. The SECOND I turn off the highway, however, BAM - signal lost. Suddenly, however, as I turn on to my road (which is about 2 miles from I95, running parallel to it, roughly), I'll get intermittent signal.

Are there any Sirius users in this area, or who have driven through this area? Can you tell me what YOUR reception is like?

I'm starting to lose hope, and am beginning to think that maybe I shouldn't have bothered with this - it's too depressing knowing that something like Sirius is right out there, yet I can't get to it....

I was in New Haven CT driving all around last month and I never had any reception problems what so ever. I drove from Philadelphia to New Haven with no reception problems as well on I95. My guess is, your installation or equipment has gone askew.

Don't give up, it is well worth it. Good luck and keep us posted

The antenna is roof mounted, as per BMW's instructions.

I know my dealership is doing their best, but it's damned frutrating. Like I said, there's a new receiver on order, and hopefully that will solve the problem. I'm just curious how the reception is for other folks who live in the area.

Default ct reception

hi there...i live in south central ct. (north haven) and (full disclosure) also am a stream jockey with sirius. i've had receivers in my cars for more than a year now and aside from occasional momentary drop outs on the merrit parkway have had no problems like the ones you seem to be experiencing. really sounds to me like a hardware problem. please report your problem to sirius. they are dedicated to fixing problems where-ever they occur.

First of all, welcome! Sorry to hear about your issues, but it's definitely either a bad tuner or antenna.

Keep us posted on the resolution.

man sucks about your problems.
i live up in bethany (up betweek naugatuck and woodbridge) and i have absolutly no issues.
i have both xm and sirius.
i drive a truk so im all around the state expecially down in your area and it just fine.
ill tell ya this tho, when i installed my sirius it was working just fine BUT when u was wrapping up the wire beocuse there liek 30 FEET of it when i zip tied it i pinched a wire a bit too much
then i was like WTF! it was jsut working 2 minutes ago perfectly!
so i wound up taking the antenna off becouse it was an antenna error but when i took off the tie the signal came back and i found the slightest kink.
ask then t make sure that they didnt kink a wire somewhere.
they try to make all the wires disapear so maybe they stuffed it somewhere or tied it too tight.
hey, its possible.
look foward to the results!

Don't lose hope, as others have said, it's not normal and they should eventually get it figured out. It would be a shame to have a nice car like that without Sirius installed

I live in Norwalk, Drive around here all day and I must report this.

95 it seems to work great, BUT. I am TOTALLLLLLLY pissed that once i get off the highways the thing hardly works... I didn't realize that even the smallest amount of tree cover would make this thing go out. Driving on CT ave is ok, the merrit is so-so at best, but jeeze, its very dissapointing.

I have the 901 kenwood receiever i got it for free so i suppose they gave me the old one It just sucks that on my daily drive from here to greenwich it fades out 15 times at least . why cant they make this thing like cd skip protection maybe a buffer of 15 seconds or so...

well now there is acually a buffer.
i believe its just under 10 seconds.
if i go into the tunnel on the merrit it will drop out liek 8 seconds into the tunnel. thats sure is a buffer.
what antenna do u have? where is it mounted?
u have to think about it this way, if somethings blocking satalite signal its not gonna work, same with satalite tv.
i get stupid dropouts too liek on rt34 where there nothing but free sky above you. it drops out and i get really pissed, but then i can be on rt114 right off 34 where theres trees halfway covering me and i dont get a single dropout.
it weird but im sure the signal is stronger at some times maybe where the satalites are moving and there closer to the atmosphere they work better.

There is a 4 second buffer.. Your getting a signal 8-10 seconds into a tunnel because there is a repeater nearby, but not strong enough to actually go into the tunnel very far. Same thing happens on the I-90 tunnels in Seattle and Mercer Island.

Actually, on the H2A, I counted 8 seconds from the time I stuck my hand over the antenna to the time the signal dropped out. I think it is a little longer on 2nd gen units.

Up in Danbury reception is pretty good for both XM and Sirius, going down rt 7... forget it... what a PITA road... actually I'm amazed at the fact that it doesn't drop out more there :>
