Default Sirius works in Newfoundland, XM doesn't!

I have been an XM subscriber since June. Upon leaving my summer job in the states, I was quite disappointed with XM's coverage in Eastern Newfoundland. I have travelled up to North West River, Labrador, and had very little troubles with drop outs on XM there, however here the story is much different. XM's satellite at 85 degrees west does not have a strong enough signal to be picked up here and we're left with relying solely on XM Rock at 115 degrees west, which only appears 9 to 10 degrees above the horizon here. As you could probably imagine, EVERYTHING makes it drop out. A single story house 10 feet from the road would be enough to make XM cut out. The only way I could receive XM reliably whilst mobile was driving on roads that would face WSW, the direction of their satellite. I was left to installing XM in the house alone, as it was pointless having it in the car anymore.

I returned to the states this month and went shopping. Just goofing around online, I found the Jensen Sirius SSR2000 unit on eCost.com, brand new, not a refurb, with antenna and RF modulator (which I'll probably end up selling to someone locally for $35) all for only $39! eCost.com was the same place I got my Sony PnP 1st generation unit as a refurb for $50, which blew my mind at the time, but $39 is amazing! I was kind of taking a stab in the dark at the time not able to find any specific information on Sirius' footprint. I downloaded the TLE keps for the 3 Sirius sats and put them into my satellite tracking program I've used for ham radio, and it seemed like Sirius should cover the island here quite well, and certainly the 55 to 63 degrees above the horizon was promising. For $39 how could I lose?

Now I'm back here in Newfoundland, I installed the unit with no problems, it came with the self adhesive antenna and I stuck that on, and low and behold, it works great! No drop outs! The only places I have problems is going slowly underneath overpasses, and a couple spots in downtown St. John's where there are a few tall buildings quite near the road. Even those spots only caused 1 second drop outs. I'm sure once Sirius gets their licence in Canada a single repeater will eliminate these problems. Everywhere else is just great! I am elated I once again have satellite radio in the car. Plus, I've always heard Sirius' dance music channels were better. They weren't kidding!

So now, if anyone is out there researching coverage in Eastern Canada like I was before, they can know that, without a doubt, Sirius works at the eastern most point of the North American continent, and don't even bother getting XM if you want to use it in the car here

Great! Now we know we can take the unit to Quebec with us when we go on vacation there.

i'm in montreal i constantly had dropouts with xm, i changed to sirius and 95% of dropouts are gone, plus i have the antenna inside the car on the front dash. so for sure, the reception is much better with sirius up north.

Awesome News. That's a good report I would agree that dance on Sirius is so much better then XM. But the folks on that other site don't seem to agree with me.

Welcome to the backstage food is over there and drinks are in that cooler.

That means those damn commies were spying on Canada as well as the U.S. assuming that Sirius' Satellites use Russian spy satellite technology.

Had we gone to shooting war with the USSR, Canada would have been the battlefield for the entire 45 minute duration of hostilities.

I'm pretty sure I heard this in the context it was spoken and laughed. Taken by itself it doesn't look as funny but context does matter :\
