SIRIUS Satellite Radio Passes One Million Subscribers

* SIRIUS' Retail Market Share Continues to Increase

* Car Manufacturers' Programs Contributing to Rapid Growth

NEW YORK, Dec. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SIRIUS Satellite Radio SIRI today announced that it has surpassed its year-end target of one million-subscribers.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19991118/NYTH125 )

Driven by robust holiday sales and helped by aggressive marketing, advertising, and an increase in consumer awareness, SIRIUS continues to see positive momentum across all channels. The company indicated that sales of its popular portable "Plug & Play" products, especially the SIRIUS Sportster, were contributing to the strong numbers, and that consumers continue to be attracted to the company's diverse product offering and programming.

"We predicted that we would reach one million subscribers by year-end and we did it," said Mel Karmazin, Chief Executive Officer of SIRIUS. "It's now clear that consumers are increasingly recognizing the appeal of our programming, including commercial-free music, plus news, weather, traffic, entertainment and the best sports offering in satellite radio."

Reflecting SIRIUS' growing popularity and high level of subscriber satisfaction, the respected auto information site -- Edmunds.com -- recently named SIRIUS as having the best overall programming in satellite radio.

"This recognition from Edmunds.com, combined with recent industry data showing an increase in SIRIUS' retail market share during the holiday season, clearly indicates that we are doing an excellent job of executing on our business plan," added Karmazin.

Besides the Sportster, SIRIUS has "Plug & Play" receivers available from Audiovox, Blaupunkt, Clarion, DISH, JVC, Kenwood, Sanyo and XACT Communication. The Orbiter SIRIUS satellite radio receiver is available at RadioShack stores, and the Streamer, manufactured by Brix, is available at trucks stops and travel centers.

Throughout the football season, the company features SIRIUS NFL Sunday Drive, the programming package that allows subscribers nationwide to hear every NFL game each week, and SIRIUS College Sports Radio, featuring play-by-play coverage of college football and basketball from over 26 top programs around the country. SIRIUS is also home to 65 channels of 100% commercial-free music as well as over 55 channels of news, sports, weather, traffic information, original entertainment and call-in talk shows, all for the great value of $12.95 a month, with no added premiums, and discounts for advance payments of one-year or more.

SIRIUS continues to move ahead with its automotive programs. Today SIRIUS can be found as a factory and/or dealer installed option in vehicles from Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Infiniti, Jeep(R), Lincoln-Mercury, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, Nissan, Porsche, Volkswagen and Volvo, and beginning in February 2005, Toyota, Lexus and Scion. Ford recently announced that it will offer SIRIUS as a dealer-installed option in four additional models for a total of 13, and plans to offer SIRIUS as a factory-installed option on up to 21 vehicles over the next two model years.

SIRIUS radios for the car and home beginning at $149 are available at major national retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Crutchfield, Office Depot, RadioShack, Sears, Target, Wal-Mart and over 25,000 retail locations around the country, including DISH Network outlets, as well as many truck stops and travel centers.

About SIRIUS

SIRIUS delivers more than 120 channels of the best commercial-free music, compelling talk shows, news and information, and the most exciting sports programming to listeners across the country in digital quality sound. SIRIUS offers 65 channels of 100% commercial-free music, and features over 55 channels of sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic and weather for a monthly subscription fee of only $12.95. SIRIUS also broadcasts live play-by-play games of the NFL and NBA, and is the Official Satellite Radio partner of the NFL.

Well, this certainly is great news. Stock is trading up in the morning pre-session.

Not surprised that XM said they reached 3.1 from 2.8 announced in September (if I remember correctly). That is actually pacing slower than you would expect a business machine to operate.

Proportionately (and I know I'm preaching to the choir here) Sirius's growth is bordering on exponential, ending 2003 with 261K subs, now with 1 million.

I do what I have to so the sales people in my area are aware how fast this company and it's subscriber base is growing. Next year is just going to be frightening.

OK, let me get this right... XM had 2.8 million in Sept 2004, and now has 3.1 million, so they have picked up 300,000 subs in the 4th quarter. Sirius had 650,000 subs 9/04, and now has 1 million. So they picked up 350K, so did they actually pick up more subs than XM even? If they did, this is unreal. I knew percentage wise they were growing faster than big brother XM, but if they actually added more subs in 4th qtr 2004, than XM, this is BIG news!

It isn't that suprising. Since Sirius now has more car deals (Ford for example) they are going to start picking up more subs.
XM gained 1.8M subs this year. That is impressive. Next year lets hope that both gain another 2M and FM dies a quick death.

Both services are doing great which is a good sign for everyone. Here is an article regarding the increase in sub rates for both services.

I think '05 will be amazing for Sirius!

Sirius has so much more going its way for 05 than Xm had going in 04, yet xm added 1.8 million subs. I would be surprised if we did not see 4+ million end of 05!

Sirius should be able to hit 3,000,000 by the time that Howard gets here in January of 2006. They need to keep the sales effort going.

Don't forget that XM has baseball which should be huge for them. Once they start advertising for the MLB on XM (they should have started before the Christmas season) I bet their sub numbers will jump quicker than they are right now.

4M subs for XM by 06 - no problem for XM (they might do that this summer with baseball). For Sirius - not likely. Even the 3M guess above because of Stern is pushing it. Stern is popular but I'm not sure he is popular enough to add that many subs.

I dont even know if baseball is so popular as to bring huge sub counts to XM.

For example, at least 90% of the people I know watch Football, only 2 people I know, so about 2-5%, ever watch baseball, and with any consistancy.

I know 4 people, just between my parents and grandparents, that listen to Stern. I dont know anyone that has ever listened to O&A.

I just think that, while XM has some new offerings, they arent nearly as popular as what Sirius offers.

On top of that, great music!

I am in Indiana visiting my dad right now, and he has my old XM Roady. They were advertising XM up and down for everything. Baseball, the SkyFi 2, and so on. Nothing impressed me though, it was all stuff I knew, and the music was still sub-par.
