Default Song/artist seek?

Hello all!

I have Sirius and use the cheapo Audiovox general receiver (model #144-2453 if that helps).

Shortly after getting Sirius in December, I moved and the box and instructions didn't seem to make it somehow.

My question is about artist and song seek. I have figured out how to put songs in for the song seek. On my unit 20 songs can be stored, and if the name is slightly different it doesn't seem to work. For instance, if I hear Margaritaville on the vacation music channel, it doesn't list the year. And if I hear it on the 70's station, it does. So if I store a song from a decades station or not, it doesn't seem to grab it with the seek if it's on a non decade station or not. Does that make sense? If so, how do I get around this?

Second, and this one is a biggy. Does my particular unit have an artist seek? I wouldn't care about song seeks for the most part if artist seeks were possible with my Audiovox unit. They could be and I just don't know without my instructions? If my particular unit does not have artist seek, can someone point me to Sirius units that do?

I know the above is possible, because my sister's XM unit has an artist seek. I prefer Sirius's music though, so I'd rather get it going here if possible, even if that means buying a new unit.

Thanks and sorry for the quick ramble. I quickly types this all while my boss was out of the room

Thanks for the link!

It's looking like the pickings are slim for finding artist seek.

I've been looking at a lot of different recievers for both XM and Sirius this weekend and the 2 ones I like the most are both XM units.

The Delphi XM SKYFi2 not only has artist seek, but also has a half hour rewind feature of the station you are listening to. With that feature you can even pause the station you are listening to, so you don't miss a favorite song if something takes your attention away.

The other nice looking one is the Delphi XM MyFi. This one potentially looks the best, though I can't seem to find out if they have artist seek on that one. It does have the capability to store 5 hours of music (I imagine this would rule for people that fly a lot) and the ability to turn any FM radio in to an XM receiver.

I got 30 free days of internet access to XM thanks to buying a new Dell 2 months ago. I've listened quite a bit over the weekend, and I just don't like the music selections as much as Sirius. It's not even close. So I'm going to try hard to stick it out here.

I think in the long run XM would be better (even with thier lesser music to me) if I have the artist seek, as opposed to not having it with Sirius.

I guess I'll hold off for a few months and hope Sirius gets some better units out there.

Check out the links in the radio forums on the Sportster 2, it will have pause rewind, etc. If you listen online, Jeremy has a great player that allows you to do artist and or song seek, and you can enter them now, and not have to wait for them to play

One thing you need to be aware of on those Delphi tuners for XM. There is no way to turn the s-seeks off. Also if you use the artist search. Everytime any of up to 20 artist is played it will alert you. I found this to be very, very annoying. Artist seek isn't all its cracked up to be in its current format. I had to finally switch mine back to the search song only as, I was being alerted to the point that I wasn't enjoying it anymore.

There is also many other basic features missing from Delphi tuners, but I am not going to get into details in this thread, as this has been discussed many times. Going by looks alone or the fact that a tuner will search by artist isn't a very good way to make a decision about which tuner to get.

I think this may fall in the "to each his own" category. I was first made aware of the artist seek by a friend who loves it to death.

Like for me I'll give an example where it would rock. Alanis Morissette is my favorite artist. But in general I don't like the rest of the music on stations she gets played on. As a result, having had Sirius since early December, I still only have heard Alanis on Sirius once. I know she gets played a lot, because I've checked the playlists on this site.

So stuff like that is what I would want it for. I suppose it could get very annoying, but if I get a receiver with this capability, I will decide then. The list of artists could be kept low if it gets too bothersome, couldn't it?

I have a Skyfi2 and I can tell you that I had Van Morrison, Nora Jones, Sarah McLaughlin on my artist seek, and it would beep 2-5 times an hour which is a bit much.

I wish that I would be able to exclude songs that they play over and over. Now someone like Keb' Mo and Eva Cassidy, please beep me when they play anything.

It is a great idea; they just need to fix the all or nothing aspects about it.
