Default song seek

how many people use seek ???

I have been playing with it for the past few weeks, so far I have come up with

1. seek by PID
2. seek by Song
3. seek by Artist
4. all of the above

where seek by Artist/Song match on parital matches
IE .. Bob Seger would match "Bob Seger" or "Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band"
Brown Sugar matches "Brown Sugar" or "Brown Sugar (1971)"
but Brown Sugar (1971) would NOT match "Brown Sugar"

a valid match switches to that channel, when the song finishes it switches back
to the original channel

also there is a "max" channel so you wouldnt be switched to the news, etc

curious if anyone has any other ideas/suggestions that might be explored

The biggest thing is that it needs to be setup where you can choose one of the following on a per entry basis.

1. seek by PID
2. seek by Song
3. seek by Artist

This would mean you've has some seeking by PID, some seeking by Song, and others seeking by Artist.

The way that XM currently has theirs where its all or nothing is a horrible setup in my opinion. My XM Audiovox XR9 will save 30 artist/songs artist or songs into the memory, but it will only do once of the three. I was all excited about searching by Artist, until I had it searching between 20 and 30 of them. My tuner constantly beeped and eventually I was forced to switch to the artist/song (PID) search.

So that is my thing... more song seek on each tuner, but also the ability to select on each individual entry into the s-seek memory as to which to search (PID, ARTIST, SONG), but not force us to PICK ONE or the OTHER for every entry.

first my theory is there is no beeping, if it matches a seek, it switches period
theory being by the time you beep and react to a beep, you have missed
the beginning of the song

I think I have it set the way you describe, you can click on the PID,Artist,or Title
and it is entered that category

once you have 20/30 it does switch a lot, but the way I am doing it, it will
not switch while it is playing a selection it "seeked" to(made up word)
but once it finishes it will jump when another match occurs, so while one
match is playing you might miss 20 other matches

there are roughly 12-15 "songs" per minute so while you listen to one song
3 or 4 dozen others could be starting

Your theory in my opinion needs to be user selectable, as always give the person a choice as to how they want this feature to perform. I personally wouldn't EVER want my s-seek to just switch my tuner without me selecting its okay. I find that the way SIRIUS text switches a few seconds before the song actually begins makes the missing of the front end of songs pretty unlikely unless you wait till the last second of the alert to switch and even then you wouldn't miss much.

Holding alerts while another song you have in the s-seek memory is playing sounds pretty reasonable. But this would mean that a song you like better could possibly be missed all together. If it alerted you or as you said automatically switched after the previous song in your s-seek memory played, then you would most certainly catch it in the middle, which would not be acceptable. So, the best bet would be for it to simple skip alerting for that song all together.

I also think using Sleep mode, should automatically disable the song seek alert feature all together, as well as turn off the beep tone when the tuner turns off.

How about by channel? I like Green Day's American Idiot, but I don't like the "clean" version played on Sirius Hits. So I would want to add it either as a favorite on any channel other than 1, or add it as a favorite to each of the 3 or 4 other channels that play the normal version. (Now that I think about it, I suppose each version is a separate PID, so you probably have that covered).

Also, seek by song title should at least match on entered characters. If I set a favorite for "Radio, Radio", it should match on both "Radio, Radio" and "Radio, Radio (1978)", etc.

For a PC, you could allow regex for any of the main fields (channel, title, artist).

Also, how about a weighting on each seek, say 1 to 100. Higher weighted seeks fire when current seeks are still being played, but equal or lesser weighted seeks are either ignored or just shown as an alert.

I would like, at the very least, to be able to just have an "artist alert." I have multiple songs by Rascal Flatts and Papa Roach in my short list I've compiled in just the last two weeks, and I would love to be able to just have it beep me every time it hits that artist, instead of a particular song by that artist. Would save a lot of memory. :P

Not all units have an artist alert.

The newer XACT XTR2CK does and my Sportster does not.

I think you have a very good point, which is the whole purpose of my question
trying to see though someone elses eyes rather than my own
so you could have Alert Only or Auto Switch ( NOW DONE )
OFF
PID
Artist
Title
All

and you are right, I have found it will switch before the song starts and
have never seen it miss the start of a song

cbattis .. you are right PID will be different for "clean" version
and "Radio,Radio" matches exactly as you describe
I have a maxChannel, minChannel might be a good idea also..
weighting would be cool, you could default to say 50, then the user
could alter it lower or higher, I think you will find though if you have
very many there will almost always be a higher ranking song start

MrsPanic(love that name) I do have artist only or song only or PID only
Artist only is what I use mostly

what I "hear" people saying most is "ALERT ME" and that is why
I am asking so thanks .. me I dont want an alert .. I just want to hear
the song ... but I do realise that I am not like everybody which is why I
am asking for opinions

for those that may not know this is the reason for my asking
http://www.satradiodot.com/

I really appreciate everyones opinions/ideas

edited to reflect DONE above without making a new post

NONE of the current batch of SIRIUS tuners have search by ARTIST or SONG built into the tuner itself. They only search by PID right now. It may show the information, but there is no way on any of these tuners for it to search specificially by artist or specifically by song title. SIRIUS assigns a unique PID or code to each song. When you save it to s-seek memory it doesn't match the text it matches that PID or code and BAM you get the alert. I am not sure what Dale is talking about, because unless he has some sort of special software outside of the tuners, he isn't getting ARTIST ONLY SEARCHES either.

XM with the Skyfi2, Myfi and Audiovox XR9/Jensen JXR9 all have the ability to search by song/title combination, artist only or song only. However, the problem as I stated in my previous post is you CANNOT select it by each entry into the memory, its either ALL ARTIST ALL SONG TITLES or ALL SONG/ARTIST. So if you select for it to search by ARTIST. EVERY ARTIST you have in memory will cause it to alert. If you have 20 or 30 of these in memory, the alerts are out of control. So XM implimenation is very poor in my opinion, but they can indeed claim searches by ARTIST.

I really don't see the need for song seek by PID. Just let them song seek by:

Title and/or artist

and the matching should be either Exact or Partial.

Dale,
Do you run a computer in your car? I've got everything in the works to put a computer my new Aerio SX. I've been playing with stuff and have come up with the following program so far

I have embedded Map Monkey which is a GPS / Driving Directions Program and Windows Media Player (I'm not sure if I'll be doing anything with video, although it's tempting for traffic jams or the occassional rides of a fairy). I am going to set up Preset Buttons be either a channel on SIRIUS or XM or to be a Windows Media Player Playlist.
