Default Auto Reception (Car Rental) for Sirius

The past 4 days I had my personal test of Sirius car reception from Dulles airport up to Northeast Pennsylvania. It was installed ina 2005 Ford Expedition. Receiver they have is one I've never seen before. Very small box that has a metal connecting it inside the molding (not factory installed) with a small window to read the info.

Reception was good on the open highways, just about up to Allentown when I went through the tunnel (naturally it cut out there), then on some areas where trees, reception would cut out sometimes. Going up into NEPA and the Poconos, I was disturbed that Sirius cut out so much more in areas that my XM would not (installed in my SUV). To be specific, up around Lackawanna State Park near the camp grounds, and pools, Sirius would cut out for minutes at a time (with car still moving). Yes, I was in areas where trees, brances, leaves, pines blocked the sky. However I get XM there when I'm out in those areas with my SUV. Downtown Allentown, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton it cut out (but then so does my XM due to the buildings I think).

This was my first time that I've been able to take my time and play around with an auto with Sirius in it, drive around, etc. But for those who say the moving sats for sirius are higher and give better reception.....I was not impressed in it over XM reception and did not notice any advantages of it over XM.

I too have comapared reception with Sirius and XM having subscribed to both. I live in Minnesota where there are many hills and valleys. I have very few drop outs with Sirius even with the antenna laying in the front window. As for XM, lots of drop outs with the antenna in the window....and less drop outs with the antenna on the roof. But I still get drop outs that are irritating. At least in my area, I find Sirius only drops out when going under a bridge. Just my two cents, but Sirius has the better satellite system for transmitting all over the U.S.

Yea, I have had a bunch of vehicles from Hertz with the same setup that you say the SUV had. I took a look at the antenna and almost dyed laughing. It was like the size of the diameter of a small pan. I couldn't believe how big it was. This was also on a 2005 vehicle.

So, before you say that XM has better reception I think you should try apples with apples. Try a sportster IR receiver with the new antenna placed next to the XM antenna (of comparable quality, the XMMINI or what ever they call it) and then please tell me how you faired.

I think that XM went with a tried and true method but I think that Sirius is going to make more customers happy in remote areas of northern US and canada without the need for repeaters, a necessity for many longitudes in the US for XM.

Just my 2¢

One thing I should of made clear is that the antenna on the SUV (it was a Hertz rental) was on the top fo the front windshield mounted on the roof. Wireing (yes I tried to peel back the molding a bit) went from the small receiver box (green background) up the passenger side to the antenna. Antenna looked like one of the newer ones (I think), oval shaped, about the size of an egg.

While it very well could of been the equiptment, I wasn't impressed with the drop outs.

Now with that being said, I do enjoy my Sirius at home where with my TERK 6 antenna I get great reception

PS...what is the name of the receiver used in the Hertz SUV? Or is it a generic one special for auto rentals?

I think that it is an audiovox piece.

I have to "chime-in" on this one as well to say that I have much fewer drop outs with Sirius than I did with XM. With XM, I could predict where I'd have them because I'd have the drop outs in the exact same places every day. With Sirius I would say that 80% of the time I'd go through that underpass that I'd have a problem with XM and I wouldn't lose the signal.

I get no dropouts except under overpasses, tunnels, and heavy tree cover - exactly as expected for overhead satellites (i.e. Sirius). My antenna is mounted just below the sunroof, recieving the signal through the glass.

Six months after I got Sirius, they deleted most of their best music channels and replaced them with the worst (Sept 29, '05). Hense I got XM on Oct 21st and doubt I'll be renewing my Sirius. I can't support a service that mimics commercial-FM.
