Default Should SIRIUS Save CBGB?

SIRIUS made an attempt to save the Bottom Line last year. I think it's another great opportunity to attach their name to a legendary venue. Underground Garage's Van Zandt is already organizing.

http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/3720.html

New York rock club CBGB, credited with starting the punk rock genre of music, might shut down if efforts by E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt’s and his other musician supporters to save the club don’t bear fruition. The club owes the landlord of the premises, Bowery Residents Committee (BRC), about US$98,000 for previous rents, even as the lease is about to expire by month-end.

In addition, the BRC, a not-for-profit organization that provides shelter to the homeless, wants to hike the rent to US$ 24,000 and to get the guarantee that future payments would be paid on time before it renews the lease.

CBGB club has a special place in history as the Ramones, Blondie, and Talking Heads launched their music careers here. But according to BRC director Muzzy Rosenblatt, the cause of the homeless comes before that of musicians. “I can’t put the needs of the club second to the needs of the BRC and the homeless,” he said.

Van Zandt, who is busy trying to garner support for the club, said he plans to host shows every night in August and have a major event starring famous musicians on August 31, at Washington Square Park to raise funds to salvage the club. He added that he has written to Rosenblatt promising him that the arrears would be cleared and the rent hike would be accepted. However, there has been no response from BRC yet.

“This is the last rock n roll symbol left. We have seen one iconic rock n roll venue after the other disappear, and we finally said, ‘let’s draw a line here, and save at least one’,” said Van Zandt, pointing to the closure of the Fez, the Luna Lounge and the Bottom Line within a period of one year.

Sirius should go after this! If CBGB is saved, it will be a ton of publicity. If not still a bit of publicity, along with concerts similar to what the Bottom Line broadcasted.

YES - not only is it a great cause, but it's also NYC Based, it's both a Punk and Garage haven/heaven and Little Steven's already involved.

Mabye a specialty show on Sirius with Sirius sponsoring concerts/events @ CBGB??

I am not sure it gains the company anything. What happened to the last venue they put their name on - was that Webster Hall or some other place (can't remember the name) but I will recognize it.

Anywho, I thought I heard the other day/week/month that the venue still went belly up and now Mayor Mike was saying its going to be leveled for some econ dev project for the greater good of NYC.

These old venues are what they are, old. Out with old and in with the new, I say.

as one of the birth places of punk I think CBGB is worth saving. Since Sirius doesn't even dedicate a stream to the genre why would they be interested in saving the site?

I am against them using money they don't have to save what other people should be saving. Now if Sirius would have a CBGB channel that would bring make it a bit different.
