Default Canadian content?

Anyone know when the required canadian content streams will start showing up?

Also, will subscribers with Canadian mailing addresses receive a sub-set of the US streams? That was the talk in the past but it wasn't clear in my reading of the ruling.

I believe they said that they were holding off on doing anything pending the outcome of the appeal.

I have a hard time believeing that the appeal will be successful. They didn't really exclude anyone from broadcasting and the CBC is part of Sirius' proposal.

I wonder what we'll be giving up to hear the new content.

I also doubt that the CRTC will budge. It already seems like XM has accepted the conditions as they have purchased a new studio in Toronto complete with XM canada banners on the outside. If XM has agreed to the conditions already, it will make Sirius' appeal a whole lot tougher.

I honestly don't think we will be giving anything up. As you probably know Sirius has devised a way of creating 25% more bandwidth that they currently have. Most likely the Canadian channels will use this new bandwidth. However, the reason for the appeal is probably due to the fact that Sirius had other plans for the new bandwidth that weren't audio related.

To get the 25% more bandwidth requires new hardware, which most likely won't be available until late next year. That being said, I think it's safe to assume that existing bandwidth will go towards the Canadian content if they are going to launch this year. Time to market is essential to get more market share so if they are going to go after Canada, then they should get the earliest start possible.

Oh my mistake. For some reason I thought the capability was going into the gen 3 chips.

You right though, if that's the route they plan to take they better do it soon. As I said, XM is already putting their plans into action which doesn't bode well for Sirius.

XM has a bigger job of getting setup in Canada because they need to install many more repeaters than Sirius. If Sirius decides to move forward in Canada, they are already well setup and should have no problem being first.

That sounds familiar. If there is any chance of beating XM to market in Canada they must do it. Look how much advantage XM got by being first to market here!

If Sirius has the opportunity to be first and wastes it by appealing the ruling then XM deserves all the extra subs they'll get.

I believe both companies are appealing the decision, but taking steps regardless of the outcome of the appeal.

XM has said they are going ahead with it, but Sirius has yet to make one peep about it. They didn't even mention it during the CC. I think they may wait for the 25% capacity increase.

My theory on this is that Sirius had set aside bandwidth for Video and could use that without stepping on existing channels if they wanted. Since they announced the technology to increase the Bandwidth by 25% using hierarchical modulation, they can use that bandwitdh for Video next year thus freeing up existing bandwidth for new channels.

I'm with you, I don't think losing that many channels to Canadian content would be a good tradeoff.

I have seen no announcements of XM going forward with it. The closest I've seen is that they are starting to spend money on doing reception surveys for the adding of repeaters. The one public press release they had indicated they are studying the decision by the CRTC.

Ah, I like that theory better than mine. Very good point.
