I have to admint, when I see Simmons I think of tooth decay and the drill BUT, he is very successful and what is wrong with this? Could be a huge hit. Sirius is really doing a good job at diversifying content:

Simmons will read people's letters on the air and then call them to give advice, provide a proverbial shoulder to cry on or just make them laugh. Simmons will often broadcast the show live from his Beverly Hills weight loss center, SLIMMONS, with a live studio audience who will have the opportunity to interact directly with him. In addition, he will give the latest information on health, diet, fitness and overall well-being.

Reality radio for the market of insecure stay at home listeners? Could be cake.

[quote="jimboxlax"]I know years ago on Howard Stern, Richard Simmons was completely insulted that Howard was saying that he was gay...

Can you be flamboyant and heterosexual?

Not that flamboyant!

Like BlueMonk said above, "Another content signing that potential Sirius customers will either love or hate."

Theres two ways to look at this..

Most of us are not in his target demographic, thus the negative posts in terms of us showing our own personal tastes as listeners...

But, if he, along with Martha Stewart can bring in a completely different demographic and increase subscribership, I'm all for him as a stockholder...

Its an internal battle that we have to fight, so posting about it can help bring about balance between our listening tastes and our stockholder values...

When recordable devices become prevalatent, all of this specialty talk programming takes on even more value since it will be easier to capture the stuff you are interested in.

Hmm, I hope they didn't pay much for him. As far as I'm concerned he's old news (except for the jokes on MadTV).

I don't like or dislike him - if his name were never mentioned again, I wouldn't notice, he's so far off my radar screen. But I guess he appeals to the Dr. Phil crowd.

The Dr. Phil crowd circa 1983. Honestly, I don't think that Sirius is anticpating his show is going to blockbuster - it's only on Sunday for three hours. I can't imagine he has a huge amount of rabid fans that will buy satellite radio to listen to him for a couple of hours a week. I am betting Sirius paid nearly nothing for him, especially if they are allowing him to hawk his products.

The only time i find that dude amusing is when he used to to on the Howard Stern show and they would make fun of him for being so... shall we say, flamboiant.
I liked when David Letterman would have him on and make him cry

Also, even beyond the fact th at it diversifies Sirius from its competitiors, it also seems to be keeping Sirius in the news. Free publicity never hurts.

I don't know if I would want this to publicized, men normally don't think to kindly about him. "Gay" and "psychopath" are words that many men associate with him.

BTW Sox, that pic is hillarious!

I am not at all crazy about Richard Simmons, but I applaud SIRIUS' diversity. Isn't that why we chose satellite radio? We wanted to find content that terrestrial radio did not have.
I am sure he will appeal to many listeners. If someone doesn't want to listen to him, we have over 100 other channels to listen to. The same goes with Howard Stern, Judith Regan, Bill Bradley, Martha Stewart, and the list goes on and on. Not all content is everone's cup of tea. It's not meant to be. For god's sake, this is the 21st century!!! Diversity is what makes life interesting and not boring. . . . . Go SIRIUS!!!

So, the press release says the show will debut on 10/2. Anybody know what the line is on them meeting this date?

I like it on The Howard Stern Show when they use Richard Simmons voice for jokes.

For those of you who think he has a huge fan base. who do you think this target market is? He has never had a radio show, hasn't had a television show in 25 years (and from what I remember of it, it sucked), and I don't even see his infomercials on late night TV anymore. There are people who still buy his fitness videos (I think), but the fact that it is RADIO makes that aspect of his appeal kind of moot.
