I have to go to Calgary this weekend. Maybe I'll try and find a shopping center to fart around in.
Yes they are but that won't increase the bandwidth.

The Word Network is being cancelled by Sirius. So there you have one space open for a Canadian channel.

The contract ends September 2nd, they must think it's not worth it to re-new.

The plan for the CSS service (CSS stands for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Sirius/Standard Broadcasting, the three principals in the company) is to broadcast a minimum of 72 streams.

The Canadian licencing criteria provide for a ratio of up to eight non-Canadian streams for each Canadian stream with a minimum of eight Canadian steams. So for every Canadian stream, there will be nine streams. Eight times nine is 72.

The CSS licence application described providing all 60 music streams, so that leaves 12 streams, eight of which would be Canadian content, leaving four steams available.

The CSS ad referenced above includes logos or other identifying information for Maxim, Raw Dog, NPR and BBC as well as NHL, NBA, and NFL.

So that appears to be the lineup for now.

Part of the CSS application for a Canadian license pointed out that Sirius would broadcast the Canadian streams to Sirius US customers.

The Canadian produced streams will not be "exclusive" Canadian content. From the CSS website, "The new channels will be at least 80% music and more than 50% Canadian content, creating a real appetite for more new Canadian talent."

No, you will still be allowed to have 50% Canadian content as long as it is 80% music. And CNN will still be able to devote 50% of its content to Canadian news.

I say Welcome to the family. All you Canuks, Frenchys, Tookas, Newfies, Canadiens, etc. Who wouldn't want cool radio up in Yellowknife. I think Sirius has a few transponders they haven't tapped into yet. Why else would that sign up an entire country?

I'm actually hopeful that one or two of the Canadian stations will be available here in the US. Heck, we have British music and news, why not Canadian?

Sirius has a leg up on XM on getting the CFL... The NFL basically keeps the CFL alive with regular cash infusions AND Sirius might actually be able to do it (given their lack of summer sports play by play).

That "Canadian Content" clause is stupid! Who cares if the music is Canadian, or American, Australian, etc.... If the music is good, play it. If it sucks, dump it! Why should any subscriber be forced to put up with Men Without Hats, Saga, Anne Murray, or The Crash Test Dummies? The criteria should be "TALENT", not some insecure, jingoistic agenda.

Whatever the reasoning behind CRTC rules is, and as much as I hate it too, I don't see a reason for this rant. You, just like any other existing or future subscriber, will be free to never tune into the canadian content channels. No subscriber, Canadian or US, will be "forced to put up" with anything.
