Default Canadian Sirius "Launching this Fall"

This is a cut-and-paste from a Canadian website

*********
"marketnews is a Canadian consumer electronics trade publication. Just got the latest issue yesterday and the entire front cover and 2 full pages inside are ads for Sirius Canada. "Launching this Fall"

"I guess that puts to rest the question of whether they are going to launch in Canada or not!"

First off, I like that cover (in fact could someone enlarge that and cut out the dog?)!

But, I don't think Canadians should get to excited, some of the content will be censored and you'll be getting less channels than we (USA) are getting. Also, this means we'll be loosing some channels probably. I don't like it, not at all.

I have never seen any reference, in any material from Sirius, in any material from CSS, or in any information from the CRTC that even hints at any content reduction.

Have you seen anything from Sirius that they are planning to reduce content, or is this a "pre-emptive" hope?

There is only so much bandwidth, and to make way for the 8 (I think that is what they say) channels of "Exclusive" Canadian content, we are going to lose something.

If we do, does that mean that Bryan Adams, The Guess Who, Shania Twain and other Canadian artists won't be on "American"
channels?

This whole segregation thing pisses me off.

Fewer channels (like no San Francisco traffic reports, no Florida weather forecasts, no US politics discussions, etc.) at a lower price (C$12.95 versus US$12.95). Plus CBC-English and other streams.

More of what I want. Less of what I don't want. At a lower price. Sounds like a deal to me.

Is there evidence that Sirius is at the limits of its technology? Not that I'm aware of. If so, it would seem to indicate not very much foresight by Sirius. Did they really think that 120 channels would be the upper limit of what they would provide when they launched those expensive satellites?

I thought the advancements in technology were going to open up the skies and provide for much more content.

Both Sirius and XM only have so much bandwidth. While they may have some room to expand, I think both are about maxed out. Why would you have only 50, 60, or 120 channels if you could do 200? If you could do 200 you would appeal to more people. As it is we have to have many Talk and Entertainment streams preempted to make room for sports. If they had the room don't you think they would use it for Sports?

They also want to do video.

I am sure that they are working on technologies that would allow them to do more with what they have, but in the meantime cutting content to add 8 "Exclusive" Canadian channels seems shortsighted.

well they seem to keep adding channels with no problem (they obviously have a lot of room to spare if they are adding crap like a Richard Simmons channel) so I wouldn't worry too much. If anything they may scale back quality of some of the channels to open up some bandwith if needed. In any case I wouldn't worry about it too much.
I'm a Canadian and I could care less about the Canadian version of Sirius, I plan to keep my American subscription...plus, anything that Canada does is usually inferior to the US version in some way.....except for the beer....we own you when it comes to beer!

I believe Richard Simmons might get a show, not a channel.

The posts about how how we don't know how much bandwidth Sirius has left are correct, we don't. We can only guess. As far as the video, I'm sure they'll just use the 25% increase next year for that so I'm sure they've freed up a lot of bandwidth they were saving for it.

Sirius has enough bandwidth to add more channels. they have been pickey in the past trying to leave room for future content that made sense. if xm has 150 channels, sirius can also. both companies have the same amount of bandwidth, sirius has just been smarter at reserving.

now that sirius has the technology that will increase their programming by 25% by 2nd qtr next year, they can begin to add more channels now and use some of their reserve.

Default Maybe another Satellite

Are they going to put up another Satellite? Maybe they would have Canadian Programming through their own satellite? It's cool anyway. I was up at a Flying J truckstop in London, ON on Tuesday, and they don't even sell Satellite Radio's up there, like they do down here.

I have to go to Calgary this weekend. Maybe I'll try and find a shopping center to fart around in.
