Default Piano Notes

In listening to ESPN radio and several other Sirius channels, I often hear three notes keyed on a piano during commectial breaks (between actual commercials). Anyone have any idea what this means?

I've not actually heard it on the radio, but if it's like tv then it means that a score update is coming up.

NO NO I think Sascol is referring to the notes played on any of the non music stations on sirius when they go to a commercial break I hear them all the time when I listen to WSM Entertainment, I heard them during the NBA Season, NFL Radio.

It's a sound bite that Sirius plays to identify that you're listening to Sirius. Like the 3 notes that NBC used to play on TV.

It probably actually has the same purpose as the NBC theme originally had...

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC_chimes:

Quote:
The famous 3-note chimes of NBC came about after several years of trying different musical note combinations. They were first broadcast over NBC's Red and Blue networks on Nov. 29, 1929. However, there are disagreements about the original source. One possibility is that they came from WSB in Atlanta which used it for its own purposes until one day someone at NBC headquarters in New York City heard the WSB version of the notes during a networked broadcast of a Georgia Tech football game and asked permission to use it on the national network. NBC started to use the 3 notes in 1931.

The purpose of the chimes was to send a low level signal of constant amplitude that would be heard by the various switching stations manned by NBC and AT&T engineers, and thus used as a system cue for switching different stations between the NBC Red network and NBC Blue network feeds; it also signaled the pause for local station identification immediately thereafter.

Don't you think that anything dealing with the network would be conveyed digitally and wouldn't require an audible tone?

I think Sirius just uses the tones as an identifier, and because they're quaint and harken back to the early days of radio.

Maybe a mod can move this thread to the "Space Cadet" forum and see if anyone there knows?

Revisiting an old thread I started.....does this not bother anyone else as much as it does me? I have Sirius ESPN radio on during the day while at work and I hear these piano tones all day long as a result. The run the same Sirius promo add a minimum of six times an hour.

I know, I know....change the channel. But I like ESPN radio. It's these Sirius ads with the treee piano tones at the end that drive me ape sh-t.
