Default has sirius ever been "off the air??"

We are talking about a 24 hour, 365 day a year operation, have the computers that run the music ever crashed??? major power outage???? occasional computer update needed to where they had to shut er down at like 2am????? I know regular FM radio can be like that, but what about satellite radio???? they must have power generators at the ny studios, and if needed could they run the whole show from LA, or nashville???? Thanks It would be so cool to work at the engineering dept. at sirius.

There has been a few problems with dead air, and computer problems on some stations, there has not been a system wide event that I know of. The back out a few year back in NYC, Sirius was on the air non-stop on Gen power. I'm told that they do have ways to switch over to a second site if something happens in NYC. Now getting the stuff in the sky to the birds, I do not know.. I think that is only at NYC.. I will ask my buddy who works at Sirius, he might be able to find out more..

Not that I am aware of, but I do have a feeling what it would be like. I had a tuner die on me halfway back from the beach!! I was pretty pissed off that ride home!!

We are experiencing technical difficulties...please stand by.

No, I can't recall anything like that ever happening.

It's been discussed on this board in the past that Sirius does have generator backups, but I don't remember the specifics.

I've had Sirius since 2003, and I can only remember one time where the was a systemwide outage in Spring 2004...my PNP showed full signal, but the display still said "acquiring signal". Reception was spotty for an hour or so, then went back to normal. Not bad for 2 years!

edit...
here it is:

I forgot about the 'updating channels' part.

Sirius uses a main satellite uplink in New Jersey, and a backup in Manhattan.
