Hey guys, I don't read this board every day, or even every week, so I'm just catching up with this now. Yes, I care about this, it's one of the main reasons I subscribe since I can't stand to hear censored radio edits of formerly good songs.

Fuck that, I don't listen to hip hop. Is there some reason rap is considered some high enough form of art not to edit, but it's ok to ruin the integrity of rock music?

And fuck Sprint too, they're the shittiest phone company of all time. I thought after we ditched my girlfriend's useless Sprint cell phone service, we wouldn't ever have to put up with that company interfering with our lives again. For years, we've already told everybody we know to stay the hell away from Sprint, do we have to start doing the same with Sirius too?

Come on man, don't be a bunch of fucking sellouts, you've got a chance to fix this before it pisses off every rock customer you own. Do it now.

I was listening to Buzzsaw the other day, and heard several F-bombs, so there's no censorship on that station that I can hear.

well, if you edited for obscenity then there wouldn't be much rap left.

I sent this via the sirius.com form and snail mail

Dear Mr. Clark,
I have recently noticed that the music stations I listen to most (Alt Nation and Faction) are being censored. I must admit I am very concerned about this and feel that I am no longer getting the value that I paid for when I decided to become a Sirius subscriber.
The Sirius manifesto (http://www.sirius.com/sirius_manifesto.html) includes the following: censorship_OFF and corporate agenda_OFF. Censoring music, especially if it is because of a deal with SprintNextel, goes directly against what you preach on your website.
Can you please tell me if this is going to be an ongoing issue at Sirius with these stations? I know that there are stations that are uncensored; I am already aware of that, and am glad that nearly all of the other music channels are still uncensored. However, Alt Nation and Faction are unique stations whose music is not available on other stations. I (and many other Sirius subscribers who chatter on forums across the internet) need to know what your agenda is with the censorship. Here is a sample forum thread if you care to see what your customers think about this issue:

http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum...er=asc&start=0

Please just give me (and the rest of your concerned subscribers), a straightforward, honest answer.

Thanks for your time, and best regards.

This is a great idea. Leave them for Jay Clark as well, although Scott Greenstein's apparently responsible for programming of ALL channels. I plan on leaving my messages for both.

This is a great way to keep the issue in their minds.

Also please keep in mind, we're talking about the unannounced censorship of Hot Jamz and Alt Nation. This is all they've censored so far, it doesn't look like they will censor the other two channels as was originally planned.

this is what Sirius had to say about the email I sent, shown above.

Thank you for contacting SIRIUS. We appreciate the time that you have
taken to write us regarding the few songs that we air that have been
edited.

Our goal at SIRIUS is to make the listening experience enjoyable to all
of our many and diverse subscribers. We strive to deliver an
entertaining mix of both family-friendly and adult programming. To that
end, we will be occasionally airing versions of certain songs edited for
family listening. This practice only affects a relatively small number
of songs in our vast library. Alt Nation // Ch. 21 and Faction // Ch.
28 are two of the few that do occasionally have censored songs on them.
We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause you.

We certainly appreciate all feedback and thank you, once again, for
taking the time to send us your comments!

Sincerely,

Dave B

I also thought Alt Nation and Hot Jamz were the only ones being censored. But, the response joepoid got back says otherwise:

Then again, we are talking about the CSRs who aren't exactly the most knowledgeable people in the world. I'm guessing since those were the two channels he mentioned, they automatically assumed he was right about Faction without checking up on the actual facts. It really doesn't make a lick of sense to only censor certain songs and play the rest uncensored...especially on Faction.

Has anyone heard censored songs at all on Faction? I know I haven't.

Seems to me that whenever Faction has songs by Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, or Dr Dre, they are always censored or edited in some way. I can't recall the other artists or songs I have heard. But I agree that Alt Nation is much more censored, as well as Hot Jamz.

I wrote a reply, then got back a quick response:

That makes absolutely no sense though.
You play a censored song, then an uncensored one right after it.
So even if families are listening, censoring one song does not make a
difference.

Sirius response:

Thanks, we got your email! We appreciate your feedback on this subject.
There are only a couple of channels that have a few censored songs on
them. Everything else for the most part is uncensored just the way you like it.

"...for the most part" -- I liked that part in particular.

I don't know if this has been posted .. 13 pages is a bit to wade through..

BUT

I just got an email from a Doug Rivers from Knowledge Networks forwarding a request from Jay Clark hisownself asking to take a survey about likes / dislikes regarding SIRIUS programming.

In the survey (which takes about 10 minutes) there are a couple of text boxes for entering you thoughts.

In each of these I entered a "Fight Censorship" message.

If enough of us do this perhaps it will pop through the survey parser and make it to SIRUS.

.... just a thought.....

Sounds good in theory, but in practice I've found that (a) people dont organize well enough to do this and (b) if only a few people do this, they will be characterized as crackpots and not taking seriously...

Best way is always the snail mail letter writing campaign.

Good afternoon everybody quick setup to my story. I am a brand new sub to sirius. On the first day of listing I came across songs that I knew to have expletives contained in them, but as I listened they we not there. I said to my self, surely I must be hearing things, surely the service that I PAY FOR to get away from censorship is now becoming just another lackey of the FCC... So off to the internet to do some research on my concerns. I come across siriusbackstage and find the information that confirms my worst nightmare, Pay service has now begun to tell you what you can and cannot listen to.
PEOPLE THIS HAS GONE TO FAR!!!

Do you know that the first step in either Communism or a dictatorship is to eliminate FREE SPEECH!!!!!

In my Opinion both SISO and DAB should be ashamed of themselves for trying/threatening to shut down this thread. The joker and Chad are correct you both sound like corporate goons towing the line for a company that you do voulnteer work for? People like myself who are shelling out their hard earned cash demand the right to know what they are paying for.
And if you want to start getting cute Siso, and putting disclaimers into play, being a lawyer, I can say that the manifesto that sirius has made availble to the genral public, puporting to fight censorship, is in direct conflict and therefore FALSE ADVERTISING.

Joker, Chad keep up the good work you have my support 100% My letter, email and phone call will be completed tomorrow.

Dictatorship and Communism? I think you have went off the deep end on this one.

Sirius is a business, and as such they have to cater to many different types of people, some that what to hear F this and F that, and others that don't. They will try and strike the balance to satisfy the most listeners. This issue was largely addressed and the worst fears didn't come to pass.

That being said, I think you should let your opinions be known by writing or emailing Sirius so that you have your say.

And for the record, my problem isn't that they ARE doing this, it's that they haven't let the customers know what channels they have deem appropriate to do such. This in itself is by far the biggest problem. How can customers make a informed decision if the company doesn't give straight answers on what service level to expect? Again as I pointed out to SISO, this is like your ISP telling you, well you'll have Internet service mostly, but we'll decide the hours you can have it, and we're not telling you what hours those are, they are subject to change at any time. Unacceptable business practice basically.
