I just sent this letter to J Clarke, hoping another voice will convince them not to censor.
I hate censorship, but love Sirius, hope to keep loving.

Hi
I am a subscriber to Sirius and a member of Sirius Backstage. I have been reading about Sirius' attempt to censor certain channels. The reason why a lot of people pay to listen to Satellite Radio is so they never have to worry about content being censored. The reason Howard Stern is coming to Sirius is because he is sick and tired of people trying to get him censored. Would he still be coming to Sirius if he knew there was censorship?
Whether it is Sprint or an individual, asking to censor is a bad idea. I have no problem with having family oriented channels, but don't put a muzzle on music or your dj's. Every wonder why people flock to shows like the Sopranos or Six Feet Under?
Censorship is a bad idea, strike it from the Sirius vocabulary.
Thanks for reading.

My girlfriend is that same way, though she normally switches channels to get away from Madison, and that's girls'a whole different rant that I'm not going to start here. Music was doing so good lately, with a shift away from artists that can't play to ones that can. I guess they just suffered a bit of a backward slide.

Man this sucks. I love Sirius and don't want my music censored. I haven't noticed alt nation being censored. I think that Sirius is hoping we won't notice the censorship. That is why they are keeping it quiet. I have noticed the censorship on Hot jamz though. And it really pisses me off that they censor Rap. I love the music on Faction when they actually play music. Censorship would diffenitly totally destroy Faction. If censorship contiues with Sirius I will be forced to cancel both my subscriptions and stick with XM.

I have cancelled my PNP2. It was used solely in the house and has not seen much use for the past few months, but that didn’t stop me from telling them it was cancelled because of the censored music! It did help me finally call them and do it though. I let them know how I feel.

Thanks for being so proactive about this Jeff!

This is by far the stupidest thing I've ever heard Sirius do...

Somebody there is missing an opportunity to salvage the image the company was built on...and it's absolutely unbelievable, in the wake of Stern's arrival.

This is awful news. I loved faction for its awesome rap, rock mixture of music and foul mouthed djs. Dear sirius dont make me go xm.

Is anyone else hoping XM seizes this opportunity to blast Sirius? Much like Sirius made XM look terrible by pointing out the commericals on their music streams, I hope XM does the same to Sirius.
I've written many letters, and have called the CSRs about 5 times so far. But I know this is a fruitless effort, we are just not that large enough of a community to make a difference. Pressure from another corporation will all but assure Sirius to change its stance.
Maybe we should think of a more proactive approach to this? Possibly some media attention to shame Sirius into submission. Please keep writing and calling, but realize unless something dramatic happens we're not going to make a difference.

My impression is that XM also plays "clean" versions of songs on certain channels.

What XM does is use an "XL" on their channel cards to mark which channels "may include frequent explicit language". That's not to say that you won't hear the occasional explicit word on other channels, just that it's not frequent.

I've written (both snail and e-mail) to inform Sirius that if this indeed happens I will cancel my sub, and go to exclusively to XM...this is not at all what I expected when I subscribed a year ago. I wonder what Stern is going to think if he has to deal with just as much censorship on Sirius?

Stern's channel won't be censored. It's only a couple of the music channels which they're distributing to Sprint...

But, yeah---I wonder if he'll say anything about Sirius itself censoring...

Alright, here was my letter:

Mr. Clark,

It has come to my attention that Sirius is considering censoring its content because of outside pressure from a potential business venture with Sprint. I am writing this to let you know, sir, that my reason for coming to Sirius in the first place was to celebrate the diversity and limitless bounds that satellite radio had to offer. Let's think about reasoning here for a second. Sprint is going to make Sirius Satellite Radio available to a greater number of people, and therefore, feel the need to impose certain restrictions. Well, sir, this is no different from cable television. Certain words and situations are allowed after hours on cable channels because one has to pay to receive it, and because there are devices that protect inappropriate material from reaching younger eyes; sure, an average HBO or Showtime subscription can get pricey, depending on the market size, and all because one's paying for the freedom of expression, basically.

At the same time, people who pay for a service must understand that payment brings with it a promise, a promise to give one their money's worth. Considering the hundreds of millions of dollars heading Howard Stern's way, it seems apparent that your company considers that venture well worth it. I would agree as well.

However, once you limit content, you become worse than XM or even Rhapsody. You are charging people for a service that is censored, when many of your subscribers (I dare say more than 70%) are over the age of 18, and take responsibility for what they listen to.

Limiting channels on Sprint-enabled phones? That's one thing. Taking the power to choose away from millions of people (while at the same time advocating Howard Stern and his explosively popular rhetoric) is downright unheard of. Make Sprint bear the weight of policing the airwaves, but leave the content decisions to the very people who got you where you are today: your subscribers.

I thought your company exuded a spirit of freedom and taste. I hope I'm not mistaken.

Sincerely,

C.J. LeMaster

Good?

Default Sirius Family Friendly Radio

IMHO: There's enough garbage and filth in the world without Sirius adding to it. Sirius Radio should be a Family Friendly Radioplace.

You're not worth it. All you're trying to do is provoke people.
