Default Sirius CEO sees live TV in cars in 2007

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. (SIRI.O: Quote, Profile, Research) expects to offer a live television service in cars by late 2007, and deals with content providers may be set as early as January, Chief Executive Mel Karmazin said on Thursday.

In an interview at the Reuters Media Summit in New York, Karmazin said the mobile video, likely to be available in 2008 model lines, would be geared toward young viewers sitting in the back seat.

Shares of Sirius rose 2.9 percent to $4.27 after his remarks. The stock is still down about 36 percent this year, hurt in part by concerns about industry spending on programming and the auto industry's woes.

"We have three content deals that are very close to being finalized. I don't know if they will be done by CES, but that is what we are shooting for," he said, referring to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. "We will have video in the rear seat of the car up and running."

Sirius has touted the possible launch of such a service for years. In 2004, it said it would offer video services by mid-2005, adding at the time that the timing depended on automakers' wishes rather than Sirius' capability. It later said it would debut in 2006.

Larger rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. (XMSR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) has also talked about the possibility of nationwide broadcast of live TV to cars.

However, XM has said it would wait for signs of a significant market before it rolled out such a service.

Sirius subscribers who want the new video service would have to pay an additional charge to their $13-per-month subscription, Karmazin said, but declined to detail the price or the cars in which it may be offered.

"The investment is already made and the benefit for us is (average revenue per user)," he said, referring to an increase in the money it will receive from subscribers. "You want to get more subscribers and increase your ARPU and ... one of the ways is with some other services, and video is one of them."

oh great, more distractions for drivers.......I guess cell phones and DVD players weren't enough of a distraction. I guess if the screen is in the back of the car though that it isn't as bad as it could be.

As a single with no kids person, who rarely rides in the backseat of any vehicle, I certainly hope the video service which will probably be kid oriented, doesn't take anything away from the audio based content's quality and the amount of audio channels to choose from.

They have always claimed they have held enough bandwidth in reserve to do the video with no impact on SQ. Will that be true? Only time will tell. Personally I think they just dumb the video idea and kick put that bandwidth to use by boosting SQ of the service overall. I think that would go along way towards keeping subscribers.

They do have reserve bandwidth, but the most they could push out atm is one channel with a very, very small picture and worse SQ than the weather channels.

Well that isn't what they've been testing. The display was a standard 6.5 or 7" display like you've have in a vehicle as I recall. It was also said they had the bandwidth to run up to 3 channels, but who knows for sure.

I am trying to remember who went to the demonstrations here on the forum. I think maybe AZJoe was one of them. Maybe he can chime in.

There was an old thread with pictures in it, not even sure how to search for it now, but I remember seeing it.

Here is one thread, but there was another... the picture is no longer in this thread showing the display... maybe AZJoe can post it again. But clearly they are talking about more than 1 channel.

DAB, I think this is the thread you were looking for. There is a post by Jeff with a picture of Joe, but the photo is missing...I'd bet the photos were lost in the migration to the new board. Maybe RyanM can dig them out of the ether...

I'm not worried about that, if it's in the back seat. Many newer SUVs and minivans have built-in DVD players or video game hookups that are only accessible from the back seat.

What I might be worried about is some NBA star driving around in his huge-ass SUV, flipping back and forth between some NBA game and the Playboy channel. Save that for home.

I'd also be worried about the increased costs, which hopefully will only mean that people pay for such a service if they want it, and not everyone pays for it. It might also mean that Sirius could lose more money with the increased costs, but Mel K. seems to know what he's doing.

They have laws (I've seen in DC) preventing talking on cell phone and DVD players in the front seat. Sirius knows what they're doing when they're releasing video.

Like all the channel adds on the video service ,this will bring your sirius radio closer to AM radio quality. If it flops Im sure they will go the other way and concentrate on their main business which is radio.
200 channel Sirius ...Sound nicer?
video is a bandwidth hog.

Could either of you please tell a) when they said this or b) why you believe it to be true?

Bandwidth is by its nature what you call a "wasting asset" - you use it or lose it. Why do you think siri would waste it all these years? the obvious answer is they wouldnt.

There is no 'reserve bandwidth'; every ounce of bandwidth they have available is in use right now which is why the sq goes to crap when they start testing stuff - they have to know just how high they can crank up H/Mod before it starts killing the reception.

The new modulation if they get it working (a big if) should give them enough to do the video. but they could also use it to provide more channels or better sq but instead they are doing video with it.

No bs please. Time to remove those rose colord glasses

Well I tell you what, why don't you tell us how it is you KNOW for a fact they are using all their bandwidth and don't actually have video running now? If you can do this based on anything but speculation, then I'll tell you how I know they do have some reserve bandwidth. You talk so much trash!

I honestly think SIRIUS would have scrapped the whole video thing long ago, but the problem is that Ford and Chrysler has put a lot of pressure on them for this. They have delayed it and delayed it, but at some point they are going to have to deliver.

I agree with you I have ZERO intent to get this type service and I feel that SIRIUS needs to stay true to RADIO and let the video go. But I have a feeling they've made a committment to these auto manufactures, so only time will tell.

The bottom line is like you said... if they do add video and the SQ tanks even more then I think we may possible see the mass exudus that I've been speaking of necessary to get them to change direction and thinking on SQ.

If you look XM has 170 channels, SIRIUS about 133 channels. Some would say this is about the pac va accplus encoders allowing XM to get better compression so they can have more channels. That maybe true to a degree, but no one on this forum knows for sure one way or the other if SIRIUS is holding bandwidth or even has video running now using bandwidth. One thing for sure if SIRIUS is doing video and XM is not that in and of itself would allow them to have more audio channels than SIRIUS.
