Default 90.1fm

ok i got a bit of a strange question. the other night while i was at walmart i was flipping the fm radio to see if the lsu basketball game was on. my radio landed on 90.1 and it was a clear broadcast of old time radio. i knew it was sirius but i turned on my radio to make sure. yep it was. now when i was going home i decided to check the frequency again. and yep theres more sirius radio. every now and then it would change out..howard to 70s to hip hop..so the question? are most sirius radios pre tuned to 90.1? and how in the world am i picking them up in my truck? i thought the new radios wouldnt transmit but about 4 feet??? and do that many people have sirius?also at one point i was getting opie and anthony so i caught someones xm radio also.

I've got an older unit (Orbiter). My only choices are 88.1, 88.3, 88.5 & 88.7. I rarely ever catch anyone else's signal.

The only thing I could guess is someone has a strong FM frequency and is over powering yours?

I think the default transmitter frequency Sirius uses is 88.1.. (But I haven't looked at all radios so I don't know for sure).

Of course in a local area, people will select 'the best' frequencies and cluster there. I guess 90.1 is your local 'best'. It's not unusual to hear nearby transmitters.

FWIW, the transmitters built over the last few months have had their power cut down substantially. There were complaints to the FCC about Sirius transmitters causing interference. The FCC checked and found many were more powerful than they were supposed to be under the Part 15 rules. The new units don't go far at all....

The other day i was on interstate and i noticed a car passing me had sirius. I tuned to 87.9 which was the default for my radio and heard 80's on 8. Sure enough it was their sirius. Signal lasted about 1/2 a mile.

Your long distance Roady is illegal then. Both Sirius and XM were exceeding the legal limits of the FCC's part 15 regulations until complaints started rollling in.. The FCC clamped down and both companies now produce legal radios.... There still are good ones living as old stock on store shelves, but they are getting harder to find.

HERE is a news article on the subject from last summer....

I purchased a Stratus last week and have been listening in the office only...but last night, decided to do a test run in the car, with the antenna just coming out of the sunroof. As I left work I had a signal on 88.3 just fine, but then completely lost it, until I got home and played with it and got sound back using 88.5.

Anyway, this morning, I was listening to Radio Margaritaville on my 1/2 hour commute here in the Boston area. However I only get RM for about 10 minutes, as the rest of the ride, I was getting Howard, then static, then classical, then Howard...then more Howard. Obviously, I am picking up other car radios, but I was shocked that their signal would supercede the one coming from my car.

I am also an XM subscriber and all the times using one of their radios with FM transmitter, I never lost a signal or picked up another radio, so I did not think I would have a problem with the Sirius unit. I guess I will get the cassette adapter so I don't have keep having interference.

I'm pretty much a gadget geek so I know there are ways to fix the issue, but what about average people who buy Siriius units, there must be a lot of frustrated people out there.
