Default Back from my Cruise, thanks Sirius!!

Just returned from a Mexican Riviera cruise, boy it's cold here in the great Northwest! Anyhow, took my starmate replay and boombox despite the Maternal units' protest. (It's too big and heavy to take she lamented) Had a starboard side room with a view, which didn't help me with a signal as I was looking west on the way down. Got nearly uninterrupted coverage from the top decks on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of last week. Left from L.A. and stoppped in Cabo, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. Got 3 bars of sat signal in each stop!

Met a guy the first night with the same radio setup listening to the Chargers game with his antenna stuck up to the sky from a 5th deck window. After that I knew I would be able to listen to Sirius. Pops and I sat on the 9th deck in lawn chairs with a flask of Crown Royal and some Cubans listening to the Lakers defeat the Rockets on Tuesday, that was a highlight. On the way back my window faced East and had coverage way out on the high seas every minute of the day.

It was beautiful, Howard and no commercials on the music chillin' in the sun knocking back Corona's all day. On the way back, tried it on the Airplane. Had a window seat facing East and pulled the window cover down and put the antenna underneath it held in place by the window shade. Full coverage all the way from L.A. to Portland. 6 bars of Sat signal, and 3 bars of Ter signal most of the way. Too bad the Lakers lost to the Wizards last night, but enjoyed the game anyway. They say no radios on the plane, but I had to try it. Matt Bullard who used to play with the Rockets(NBA fans will remember him) was on the flight and I told him of the score and he was quizzical as if I were a sage of some sort. Made a believer out of Pops, who was on the fence before the trip, he was telling everyone about the signal strength and range of the Satellites. He was rather impressed.

Thanks Sirius! You kept me in touch with the world even as the Satellite uplink on the ship went down on Friday. Sirus never let us down.

Thumbs up

It's always nice to take and listen to satellite radio on vacation.

i'd think you could use it in "mp3" mode but not live satellite. Wonder if the FAA has any info on their web site about satellite receivers.

Default FAA Regs

I read the back page of the Airline magazine from the seat ahead of me. Of course phones not equipped with an Airplane mode are prohibited. CD players, I-Pods, laptops are all fine once at crusing altitude. AM/FM radios of any kind are strictly prohibited at any point in the flight. It didn't mention satellite radios though. I'm sure if they knew people had them on planes they would correct their disclaimer.

Had they caught me they would have asked me to turn it off for sure, and I would have done so. They claim AM/FM radios could interfere with navigation equipment in the cockpit. I had my FM transmitter off as it was docked in the boombox. I can't imagine they want these devices on, even if it's satellite.

I did the exact cruise last April. What cruise line did you take? I did Holland America and everything was great. I did not have as much luck in my room with my Sirius setup. I should have brought a ipod.

We took Royal Caribbean to Cabo, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. They do a nice job.

Yes, Royal Caribbean does a good job. We did that same trip mid-October. Now I'm thinking about getting one of those cheap S50's for the cruise we just booked for July. Thanks for updating us on the reception in that area.

I don't know though, because a lot of the AirTran flights out of Atlanta are equipped with XM in the armrest.

Oh really, I didn't know that. That would be a great addition to the airline service to have satellite radio already equipped on the plane. That's certainly different than someone bringing their own radio and using on the plane though, ya know.
