Default Question on sales tax on satellite service

my one year service was just auto renewed and i noticed i was assessed 10% tax on the $142 one year agreement. residing in dc where we have 5.75% sales tax, i couldnt figure out why i was taxed at the 10% rate. i contacted sirius, and had my first CS experience. i wont get into the fact that the individual i dealt with was barely articulate and knew nothing about anything, but after placing me on hold four separate times he advised me that this is levied by the FCC and i should contact them if i had any questions. he further advised that rates are set locally by each FCC office, which seemed absurd, but i wasnt gonna get anywhere with this guy so i moved on. being a federal govt bureaucrat myself i was not overly optimistic about contacting the FCC but i actually reached a helpful, reasonably educated person who checked and could find no information on any taxes assessed by the FCC, which makes sense to me since they are not a tax levying organization to my knowledge.

so my question is, have you all been assessed 10% tax on your service plans, and if so do you know how the rates are set?

Some states, like Florida (where I live), assess a cable/satellite tax which is separate from sales tax. Check your state's website. Florida rate is 13.17%.

There's no such thing as an FCC tax. I can't believe that Sirius rep said that? Well, actually I can. They're the biggest Bulls*&ters in the world I swear!

It must be a DC imposed tax. It's quite possible that Sirius is taxing you at the wrong percentage.

Here in TX they charge a 8.25% sales tax. Which is why I have my radio registered at my parents address in tax free N.H.

Yes, unfortunately the reps are pretty much useless except to activate or cancel subcriptions and a few other basic functions. They have no knowledge as to technical issues or billing details. Again, unfortunately, they tend to bluff their way through it if they don't know the answer.

Say That! I agree it is amazing what these folks will say to get someone off the phone.

Still no tax on Internet or Sat Radio in Louisiana. I am surprised!

Yes, I agree, there's no such thing as an FCC tax. But indeed there are FCC fees for some telecommunication services, just not SDARS, at least not yet...
