I can certainly vouch for XM's Watercolors - it's a great contemporary jazz station. Notice I didn't say "smooth jazz" station, which is what Jazz Cafe is. The difference? You won't hear music that isn't contemporary jazz. You won't hear things like Marvin Gaye, or the Doobie Brothers, or other things. You WILL hear Steely Dan, Sade, and that type of crossover music. Watercolors is great, and one of the reasons I have XM. And the playlist is deep, another great thing about XM. While I have both services, I choose the playlists of XM over Sirius. Now, if only XM had a station like Spa 73..........

for me sirius is good for an hour or so of straight listening. I know what I am going to get, anything more then that however and I switch over to xm. Sirius just repeats artists way to much which isn't bad its just not what I want when I have the radio playing all day (unless I change the channel every few hours).

sirius music = music store at the mall.

xm music = that music store in the village.

Can anyone vouch for Xm's smooth jazz station "Watercolors" ? I'm not bashing Sirius either, I just bought a new vehicle and want to install my current Sirius radio or venture to the XM side. Keep the opinions coming. I appreciate the honesty !!!!!
Watercolors is the better choice. When your listening to watercolors it sounds like the jazz they play on the weather channel during local on the 8's.Watercolors is mostly instrumental with a sprinkling of vocal jazz. Also xm has Escape a beautiful music station,Enlightned a southern gospel station and Cinemagic a movie soundtrack and score station.I chose xm because of Escape.I've emailed Sirius about getting a b/ez station and they keep telling me they will send it to the pr people.Another thing I like about Xm is the holiday music. At Halloween Cinemagic does Halloween scores and at Christmas they have 5 different formats of Christmas music. They especially have the hard to find Christmas music like Special X and traditions.Keep in mind I'm not bashing Sirius I like the Elvis channel,Standard time and their bluegrass station.I listen to Sirius thru dish and I have an Xm sub.

Thanks for the info. I am extremely interested in the movie soundtrack station also. On Sirius, the Broadway station is nice too. I saw that XM has a comparable channel also.

Watercolors sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. The music on the weather channel is great so I would like Watercolors immensely ...Thanks for the input !!!

xm has no stations with commercials. clear channel on xm has 5 stations with commercials. sunny, mix, kiss, nashville and wsix-xm (fm nashville)
all 5 of those are blocked on my radio. xm has 69 commercial free music channels.

Ah....Spa 73, yes. I do miss that one. I dumped 2 of my Sirius subs and have only one left, which is in my car. I currently have 3 XM subs 1 in the house, one in my car, one in the wifes. But I can't listen to Spa 73 in the car, just too relaxing if you know what I mean. Someday XM will have a Spa too, just you wait and see.

I would take the time to write up a nice reply, but honestly, Grüpsaar's immediate reply to the initial posted question is dead on accurate.

I've had both and the way he described the more hit-oriented nature of Sirius while not being as bad as FM radio is very accurate. XM, in my opinion, went a little bit too far in playing a diverse lineup on what should be hit-related primary channels (i.e. 90's on 9), where Sirius presents what I would see as a healthy balance of both diversity and hits, depending on what channel you're at.

The lower stations on Sirius are extremely hit-oriented, but not annoyingly so like FM is. The primary channels in each genre are as well (i.e. 21 - Alt Rock), but as you ascend in each genre set or the channels overall, it gets more diverse.

I believe that the name of the station is a good hint to how much repetition you'll be getting. On Sirius, if the station name is almost identical to an entire genre (Alt Nation on 21), it will be hit oriented, as compared to something like "Left of Center." On XM however, no channel is spared, they're all a little too diverse for my taste. Give me some hits!

Hope this helps/makes sense!

Not only do I like the hits, I really like the obscure songs that an artist may have. You know, a song that you may have heard before but couldn't remember the title or the artist ?? I like real deep playlists ....

I originally got SAT radio because I was about to go to work at a summer camp 40 miles past nowhere. (I actually let a terrestrial radio scan for 13 hours and 18 minutes without luck.) Before buying I looked at both SIRIUS and XM for about a month. I finally decided on SIRIUS because of their hit music lineup. They brag quite a bit on Hits 1 that they get music before other stations, In fact I am listening to songs on my stiletto at least a month before those on their testicular radios.

Talking First Wave Classic Alternative

I enjoyed this channel for a while, since I knew practically nothing about "Classic Alternative," whatever that is.

After only a few hours of listening at work, however, I had heard all that the channel had to offer. Before long I gave up and quit the channel. It's similar to the old terrestrial stations. Listen for about a week and you've heard everything. Then the monotony kicks in.

It doesn't help that the channel has annoying DJs.

With Xm I would listen to Lucy,Fred,Ethel,Top Tracks,Big Tracks,Deep Tracks,Boneyard, and every couple songs they would play something youv'e never heard of, and I would start channel surfing. With Sirius I've started listening to Buzzsaw,Spectrum,Alt Nation,Vinyl,Rewind, now I lock onto a channel and only worry about running my battery down when I'm parked.

I thought Ethel on XM had commercials? Isn't it one of the CC stations?
