SIRIUS Satellite Radio
SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO AND NATIONAL LACROSSE LEAGUE SIGN MULTI-YEAR BROADCASTING AGREEMENT

NLL “Game of the Week” to air live nationwide on SIRIUS
NEW YORK – February 1, 2007 – SIRIUS Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) and the National Lacrosse League (NLL), North America’s professional indoor lacrosse league, have signed a multi-year broadcasting agreement that makes SIRIUS the exclusive Official Satellite Radio Partner of the NLL.

SIRIUS will broadcast a live NLL “Game of the Week” throughout the season plus the Champion’s Cup Playoffs. On Friday, February 2, SIRIUS will feature Minnesota Swarm at Portland LumberJax at 10 PM ET on channel 123.

In addition, SIRIUS will debut a weekly one-hour show later this season that will feature highlights, news and analysis, which will be broadcast exclusively on SIRIUS in both the U.S. and in Canada.

“We’re excited to team up with SIRIUS Satellite Radio to give fans even greater access to NLL action”, said National Lacrosse League Commissioner Jim Jennings. “As more and more people are tuning in to satellite radio, it’s important that we partner with SIRIUS, the industry leader and the top provider of sports radio programming.”

“Lacrosse is a growing sport with a growing audience and the National Lacrosse League features some of the best talent in North America,” said Steve Cohen, SIRIUS’ Vice President of Sports Programming. “With live game action and in-depth talk and analysis, SIRIUS will be a must listen for lacrosse fans.”

Lacrosse ... That should bring on another million subscribers.

I wonder which channels they'll be preempting for this?

I actually like this. In Columbus, we lost our team and I liked the sport. The game is shown on Versus, which I just dropped that package from cable, so now I can still follow the league.

Should be interesting. Not knowing a great deal about the game, I wonder how easily I'll be able to follow it on the radio.

Lacrosse? Everyone knows that Curling is where the action is!

This is Lacrosse, BTW:

Apparently the objective is to either catch butterflies -or- see who can clean a swimming pool the fastest. Not entirely sure which one.

That would piss me off beyond belief! I even get upset when an NFL game preempts Radio Classics and the others...and this is coming from an NFL fan.

One of many Lacrosse organizations that has over a 200k membership did a demographic study of its membership and found:

US Lacrosse’s over 200,000 members are...
family oriented, educated, active and affluent!
Of our adult members:
* 59% are married with children
* 84% have a four-year college degree
* 46% have an annual household income over
$100,000 a year (67% over $50,000)
* 75% own their own home
* Running, golf and bicycling are the most popular
sports for lacrosse families
----------------------------------------------
Survey data from US Lacrosse:

US Lacrosse Estimate on Number of Lacrosse
Players in 2005

Youth (non-high school, age 15 and under)................. 204,384
High School.............147,042
College..................24,502
Post-Collegiate Club......6,990
Professional................150
Total...................381,568

US Lacrosse Estimate on Number of Lacrosse
Players Nationally
2001..........253,931
2002..........288,104
2003..........301,560
2004......... 351,852
2005..........381,568
---------------------------------------------------------

I wonder what the data is from Canada where Lacrosse is vastly more popular? I can understand why some make fun at the move by SIRIUS by looking at the demographics. Lack of knowledge is a fearful event.

Hardly a rape case. More a lying hooker, a sensationalizing District Attorney and a Jesse Jackson looking for a podium.

The semen found in the victim did not match ANY of the defendants (when she swore under oath not to have had sex for weeks before the incident).

Not only did it ruin these guys, but apparently tainted the great sport of Lacrosse.

Growing popularity with an affluent fan base... go to a high school lacrosse game on Long Island and it's Mercedes/BMW/Volvo city.

Sirius may not even be paying for the rights, rather the NLL may be paying Sirius to carry it.

Now if only Sirius signed a deal for real professional lacrosse and not the arena league of lacrosse....

Quote:
While lacrosse is America’s oldest game, it may be the “freshest” sport in the nation. Its unique blend of fast-paced, high scoring, hard-hitting action has made it the fastest growing team sport in the United States. In lock step with this growth, Major League Lacrosse (MLL) was successfully launched in June 2001 as a single entity ownership structure to showcase the best professional outdoor lacrosse in the world. MLL was founded by Jake “Body by Jake” Steinfeld with founding partners Dave Morrow, Tim Robertson and Jim Davis.

In 2006 Major League Lacrosse became truly a “national league” when it welcomed the Chicago Machine, Denver Outlaws, Los Angeles Riptide and the San Francisco Dragons into the MLL. The new teams will form the Western Conference while the six original teams – Boston Cannons, Long Island Lizards, New Jersey Pride, Philadelphia Barrage, Rochester Rattlers and Washington Bayhawks will be members of the Eastern Conference. While there are local team operators in each market, the new ownership groups in Denver and Los Angeles both come with tremendously successful backgrounds in sports. Denver is led by Denver Bronco CEO Pat Bowlen while Los Angeles is operated by the Anschutz Entertainment Group. MLL will add two more teams in 2008 with possible markets including Columbus, Dallas, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Seattle and St. Louis.
Those who are too wussy to play lacrosse play hockey. Hell, Jim Brown got tired of enduring the punishment of lacrosse that he decided to go easy on himself by playing in the NFL (that's a slight exaggeration, but not that far from what happened).

From: wikipedia:

Quote:
Early players concentrated on first injuring their opponents with their sticks, and then moving easily to the goal. Games could be played on a pitch over a mile wide and sometimes lasted for days. Often players were gravely injured or even killed. Early balls were made out of the heads of the enemy, deerskin, clay, stone, and sometimes wood. Lacrosse has played a significant role in the community and religious life of tribes across the continent for many years. Early lacrosse was characterized by deep spiritual involvement, befitting the spirit of combat in which it was undertaken. Those who took part did so in the role of warriors, with the goal of bringing glory and honor to themselves and their tribes, and as a religious ritual.

These lacrosse games lasted from sun up to sun down for two to three days. These games were played to settle inter-tribal disputes and also used to toughen young braves in preparation for future combat.

In the United States, the sport is popular in Maryland (where it became the official team sport in 2004), New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New England and other areas along the east coast. In addition, its popularity has started spreading to the west coast and Texas spurred by the sport's increasing visibility in the media, the growth of college and high school programs, and "pee wee" leagues throughout the country. The westward expansion of lacrosse was facilitated in large part by the location of the US Air Force Academy in Colorado. The academy's desire to compete with Army and Navy in every sport brought lacrosse to that state where it has been a high school sport since the 1970's. The only two NCAA Division I men's lacrosse teams west of the Mississippi River are Air Force and the University of Denver.

It's only 1 game a week, during the summer, when Sirius has NASCAR and...? Only 125 is going to be affected.

Football had a pro league that actually paid players a living wage in the 1950's . Lacrosse didn't. That's a little closer to what happened.

I agree 100%. Everyone here at Duke fully supports Duke lacrosse and the true victims of this case....the players being charged.
