Default Channel Shakeup Coming Soon??

In the press release mentioned below, advocates for "The Word" channel mention that a Sirius official said 2 'minority' channels would also be removed, in addition to "The Word".

Any guesses as to the channels?

Was he referring to Black music channels, or Hispanic music & talk channels? Both?

Are there 2 channels which cover similar musical tastes already which could be combined?

Alternately, is there a way to 'shake up' the categories for the hip-hop & r&b music channels to cover most musical areas with 7 channels rather than 9?

And shouldn't Praise54 be placed w Spirit11 under a new Religious category?

Sounds to me like they might be talking about the minority talk stations. But as far as music goes; I could see them easily combining "Heart and Soul" and "Slow Jamz". Everytime I listen to them, they seem to sound about the same and cover the same ground to me.

Nope, they are 2 different channels imho. Alot of people who listen to 54 do not listen to 11 and vice versa. They moved Praise to the R&B category from the upper 90's for a reason...

Agree, totally different these two channels, they have different audiences. Its like saying all rock is the same.

I love Heart and Soul, don't care for Slow Jamz, but I can see having them together. I just wished they had a better "classic" 70', 80' R&B station.

They should move the blues and reggae to R&B.

The sentence in the PR actually says:
During the private meeting, Clark told Jackson and Gibbs that Sirius had also cancelled two other minority channels.

"Had also cancelled" means cancelled ever in Sirius's history. Jackson and Gibbs were looking for more ammunition against Sirius's minority programming practices, and Clark may have found it necessary to acknowledge Sirius's long-removed Hispanic Radio Network channels, La Red Hispana and Radio Mujer.

Yep , another r&b adult channel gone, and no replacement (Slow Jamz), and no funk added. The only possibilty I see is the renaming of Soul Revue to Soul Town, updating its image and possible playlist- to include more funk?

Default I don't know Sirius. This focus on rock is very annoying.

I was hoping that slow Jams would be replaced with something else. Neo-Soul, funk, another classic soul channel. No we have Christian Rock. If one service starts focusing on trying to build business in the urban community I will be choosing them. They seem to be going in a direction that I don't like. Now I don't listen to that many stations. In that case what is the point of the service. All of the formats should be balanced. Right now the Urban section is Rap Rap and Rap. Well I hate rap.

That is the point I have been trying to make here many times. It seems the black community( of which I ampart of) is being slighted somewhat, possible in favor of others. What we have in urban porgamming at Sirius (which I have had since February 2002), is weighted to the hip hop and rap genre and leaves out adult 35+ with the exception of Heart & Soul and Soul Revue (Town), of which are both fine channels. But other adult R&B genres are being ignored. I have nothing against Christian rock, New Age, and other forms of music being added- the more the better. I realize Slow Jamz music and programming can be incorporated into Heart & Soul, but there remains a void in black oriented, urban adult music on Sirius, and it isnt getting better. :\

After reviewing the newly reshuffled lineup to take effect next month, I'm under the impression Sirius believes its 35 and over African American subscriber base isn't large enough to support more than two streams of music programming. I think they're wrong.

If XM believes its African American 35+ subscriber base can support 3 channels (Soul Street, The Groove, Suite 62) then why can't Sirius share the same faith? IMO they're being really short sighted. There's no argument that Rock deserves the majority of streams devoted to the genre, but 14? A bit of overkill there.

Am I concerned? Yes. I believe there's nothing to stop them from removing one more R&B stream in '06 and morphing Heart & Soul and "Soul Town" into one. It could happen. Once again, I sense a scenario where 2 streams will mirror each other, the exception being "Heart & Soul" will rotate newer Adult R&B throughout its playlist. And should the playlists on one stream begin to mirror the other somewhat and we bombard them with e-mails and calls suggesting change, all it will do is result in another stream devoted to R&B getting deleted next year.

I'm being a pessimist here. Sirius is still a good service (not great; there's room for improvement, and I do understand the bandwidth limitations, having to free up space for Canadian streams) and at this point the NFL, NBA and Stern are the reasons I still keep a subscription. I'd like music to be one of those reasons too, but I don't have enough faith that Sirius has faith in my demographic; to me it seems Sirius is pushing it and us in front of a fast moving bus.

Thanks T-Bite. well said. There isnt much more I can say that hasn't been said already. I just find it hard to believe that such a large demo as you have said, is being left out except for 2 channels. Even HotJamz is being changed a bit from an urban contemporary format to r&b/hip hop, sliding the numbers/age scale a bit lower for that channel too. Well, no more getting my hopes up.....I hope we can hang onto 2 channels now!

Default I am not even over 35. I am just not a rap fan

I am 26 and don't like rap at all. What about all of the new R&B out there. Hot Jams is just Hot97 with no commercials. One negative about the company being programmed here in NYC is that it sounds like NYC radio= Boring. If they make Heart & Soul like WDAS in Philadelphia. Added a new younger R& B station and had Hot Jams the lineup would be perfect. I guess we have to write in for May/June of next year.

I'm going to miss Slow Jamz. SJ actually played songs to the fade out unlike Heart and Soul that has DJs talking over the track before it ends.

and I already vented about Wax in the channel update thread.

It's like I got hooked on the "urban" stations and then they're taken from me. For me, it's not really an advantage in Hip Hop music on satellite radio anymore. :\
