Default Siriusly? Overhaul ALL the R&B stations

I know I'm a newbie, but the biggest area of music that Sirius is lacking is definitley R&B. (NOT Hip-Hop. Two different genres) R&B and Soul is just as wideranging and deep as rock music. As we all see, the rock stations are broken down in interesting sub-genres like hard rock, metal, JAM Bands and Garage Rock. All of them excellent. They go deep. R&B is very deep too. The 1 classic soul station is to far-reaching and (hate to say it) too MOR. I mean Earth, Wind & Fire did a lot more interesting songs than "September". Mirroring the classic rock stations, there should be 2 classic soul stations and a deep soul station that could be a revelation. Along with a funk station. Now I'm asking for TOO much.
A Neo soul station wouldn't be bad either.

I totally agree with your assessment.

After this line up change I wouldn't doubt that Sirius would kill off Heart and Soul if they had their way

Quick recap of the history of Heart & Soul 51---- came to Sirius in Feb 03, it replaced The Express, an old skool channel, it was suppose to be a 50-50 split of the best R&B or today and yesterday( 1980-today). It really was an urban a/c offering. Now with the demise of Slow Jamz 52 on 9/29, Heart & Soul also takes over the softer side of R&B- the ballads. So this channel is really suppose to be 3 in one. While I do like it, it hardly does justice to 3 distinct formats. Soul Revue becomes Soul Town, and it has slid up its focus from early 60s to mid 70s R&B classics, to late 60s/Motown to the mid 80s R&B classics, dabbling in a bit of funk at times. So, now Sirius offers us 2 R&B channels....when they first came on they had 4 of them. You may not like or even know R&B, but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out the offerings in adult R&B programming on the dog are getting fewer and fewer- I have been with Sirius since the beginning almost , and know it first hand.

You never know :\ -- that's why I'd recommend you purchase one of these to supplement your Sirius listening if you don't have one already

I'll keep one Sirius subscription as long as they're in business; there's too many talk and sports offerings in their lineup that appeal to me. As for music, particularly old school R&B, I'm a realist where its concerned. Sirius is in business to make profits, and they won't fully commit to "niche formats" until they feel there's a significant enough portion of their subscriber base demanding it. Face it, us old schoolers are outnumbered and have been outvoted by the rock fans, and Sirius has committed to move in that direction. That's just the way it is. I've written letters to Sirius protesting the removal of the Express for more than 2 years. I won't write another one. Old school R&B won't disappear entirely on Sirius, it will be available in some form, and we may not like the way it is packaged, but either we adapt and get used to the change or simply move on. I decided to adapt and augment.

I've accepted the fact Sirius probably will not resurrect the Express, or create a similar sounding stream for the forseeable future. The concensus among the suits is that old school R&B doesn't have the audience size or support to warrant its own stream, regardless of the income level of the 30 to 55 y/o subscriber that could support it. So our only options are XM, an iPod, or both. I own an iPod, and carry XM and Sirius subscriptions. That works for me.

I do too but I still turn to any of the R&B songs I have saved even if I have the track on my mp3 player.

I`ve posted about this subject in the past and have been accused of "playing the race card".I feel that any1 that thinks otherwise is blind.Since I`ve been with Sirius I have noticed that when there is a channel change the "Black Channels" take the hit.

Default Get XM-- I did and love it--

I just signed up for XM. Just listening to Suite 62 and The Flow. I can listen to those 2 channels for days. then you have the classic olidies channel "The Groove". Sirius has really messed up on that. They focus on HipHop which I don't listen to even though I am 26. I love NFL, but am really thinking about XXL my Sirius come the end of my yr sub.

That may be true.

Even though, I wasn't around in the 60, 70's and early 80's, hell, even I know that Sirius sucks ass in the R&B category. They are missing so many songs from that era. Don't even get me started on songs from the 90's (my era) which I know Sirius doesn't play at all. I like hip hop like most people my age but I prefer R&B to tell you the truth in most cases. Sirius doesn't even act like this music genre is worthy of being on their network. Heart & Soul plays the same tired songs from the same era over and over...you rarely hear any 1 hit wonders or classics on 51 or 53.

The playlists are so damn tight that if it wasn't a top 10 or 20, you are lucky if you hear it all. I'm with you guys but I moved over to XM late this summer and I"ve been pretty happy. Yea, sometimes they play songs that have you looking like this but most of the time, I will hear a song from the 90's that I haven't heard in years and just jam to it. I can't say the same for Sirius. Most times, I would get pissed and just change the channel cause i heard the same song again . I can't say the same for Sirius.

My favorite song that I always use when we talk about the R&B channel is Silly by Deniece Williams. I heard it today on my break. The last time this song was played was July 18, 2005. Almost 4 months now! It has been played 7 times on Sirius in almost 2 years. You can't tell me that isn't pathetic. Why isn't this song on Sirius Love, Heart & Soul and Soul Revue?
This is what happens when you handcuff the dj's and Program Director hands and force them to force fed us the same tired ass songs, day in and day out.

Since Sirius obviously doesn't think AA/R&B music genre isn't as important as Rock or we just aren't their target market ( ). Fuck them. I'll stay with XM where it seems they give a shit about us.....rant over... :\

With the entry into the mid 80's R&B isn't that dabbling into Heart & Soul playlist?

Does anyone know or have a breakdown of the demographic % of Sirius listeners ? I agree that it seems like they are targeting a certain type of subscriber.

That's very distressing. I already got off one sinking ship (NY radio), have I jumped onto another? You mean to tell me that "Underground Garage" and JAM ON have a bigger audience than the most influential form of music? And why did they move my thread to here? It's like preaching to the choir. What to do now?

Get an XM sub. at least XM takes my demographic more seriously and provides programming accordingly.

You know, I just did a song search for "Shining Star" by Earth, Wind And Fire, and nothing came up for it. Then I just did a search for Earth, Wind And Fire, and still nothing came up. I would think you'd hear a song or two from them on the 70's and 80's channel.

Maybe I did something wrong.
