Default Where's the Underground? (the state of hip hop)

Does anyone think Sirius will ever get a true Underground station? Or is there one in the mix that anyone knows of? I mean we have like 5 stations of commercial rap BS and no underground. If it wasn't for Backspin I wouldn't listen to the hip hop stations at all.

Sirius needs to think about all the additional customers they could pickup with a straight underground station. Sure, it wouldn't be like a Howard Stern effect but anything that adds to the customer base should be a good thing.

Honestly, there isn't really anything on Sirius that interests me enough to pay for it. If my wife didn't have it I doubt I'd have a subscription.

That being said, Sirius could be the perfect outlet for true underground heads looking for somewhere to hear decent music besides their own CDs. Commercial radio stations are just that, commercial. The only thing you hear is the same old crap that's been playing for 10+ years - the commercial garbage that some record exec wants you to hear. It's a catch 22. The execs only put out garbage because it sells. The garbage only sells because like 80+% of people listen to what media tells them I good. Media is owned by the same corporations that produce the music. See where I'm going with this...

If record companies would promote good hip hop then people would actually like it and want to buy it. The problem is no record exec has the balls to say 'this won't sell millions of copies but it WILL sell and it his a better message than this garbage over here talking about bling, bitches and cars - I'm going to promote it." That's not going to happen because, just like everything else in this world, it's all about the money.

This posting is to promote discussion. What are everyone else's thoughts?

I agree, but here here are some shows you may want to check out on HHN:

1) Dj Premier (Friday, midnight -2AM)
2) DJ Jamad (Sunday, 8-10)
3) The Mix C hronicles (Sunday midnight-2AM - underground show)
4) DJ Smooth Denali and J-Love (Saturday, 2-4AM)
5) DJ Wonder 9Monday, 2-3AM, or download mixes here)

These shows do not play the same tired songs - you won't hear any "lil" songs here. If you have an S50 or Stilletoo, record these shows and make your own channel (you have 9 hours of pure hip-hop here).

Sirius programs its channels like FM stations do, going for mass appeal within each format except for a few specialty shows. Don't expect that to change with Mel Karmazin running the show; he's the one who in the '90s ruined the formerly best alternative rock station in the country, L.A.'s KROQ.

Hey alright! No "lil" songs. LOL thanks Ryan!

I'll be sure to check them out. Sound like some good shows. Unfortunately I don't have either of the models you listed. I'll try to catch the ones I can. Too bad they have them all on in the middle of the night.

Hey when you say "Friday" or "Sunday" "Mid - 2am" do you mean like technically Saturday and Monday? I figure you do but just wanna make sure.

Yeah I see what you're saying Wayne. Too bad good music is a "specialty" and wack sh*t gets continuous airplay.

Thanks for the info/comments guys!

I agree wholeheartedly - I just had a thread about that!

In any case, Friday at midnight means, technically, Saturday 12:00AM

I've made it known here before that an underground station is definitely needed. I really only listen to those shows that Ryan mentioned, plus a little Backspin as far as hip-hop goes.

I'm not really a fan of Hip-Hop at least not a lot of the commercial stuff but,I do like a lot of the underground stuff. As far as getting a station dedicated to underground hip-hop get in line. When it comes to requests for changes in the R&B/Hip-Hop category I've come to the conclusion that IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN

We have been emailing Sirius for years to return what used to be The Express 44 which was a dedicated FUNK channel, all we got back was the generic replies.
One day count the number of ROCK/POP stations then count the number of Adult R&B stations (2) and the number of Hip-Hop channels (4) then count the number of Rock channels (17) not to mention 3 dedicated channels to Elvis,The Stones, and The Who.

I have always felt that Sirius could consolidate a couple of the 17 Rock channels in order to provide us with the programming we like.So I felt like Sirius has shown me that since I am NOT a part of their target demographic don't hold my breath waiting for changes.

I think they should have a George Clinton channel.

Let's see: there are 3 single artist channels - they could be:
1) Funk
2) Punk
3) Ungerground rap (or at least make HHN more underground!!!)
Wouldn't that be a nice lineup? Elvis can be absorbed by 5, The Who by Classic Vinyl or something, and the Stones by all the other rock channels.

Totally agree. My guess is those artist pay big buck for their channels? But instead of the Stones I could go for some Clinton.

No single artist channels...I would go for a daily or weekly showcase of various artists on a single channel.

Oddly, I hear more more underground hip hop artists on Faction than on the actual hip hop stations.
I would love for a channel to be dedicated to underground or even a weekly show like XM's Subsoniq.
