Default Need an underground channel.

We need an underground channel similar to the 2 that are listed under Rock. There's a lot of independent label rappers out there that are worth listening. If you agree send an email to Sirius and even list artists to buy and which areas they are sold since some are strictly regional.

A few shows a week would be a welcome addition IMO.

I have sent a few emails to Sirius regarding this, but never sent a physical letter. That might get more notice than an email. I did the Hip-Hop Nation survey and stated that there needs to be more underground.

I like the idea, but my perspective of the current artists in the underground seems less developed then back in the mid to late 90s and even early 00s. I agree, some labels like Def Jux and Stones Throw have a solidified roster. But I don't see the same development from current underground MCs like I did from those like Dilated Peoples, Mad Skillz, MF Doom, etc. Maybe I haven't heard the right MCs lately so someone could school me if they wanted to. I agree that LB deserve, among other artists, some more spins. I know Lil' Shawn added "Life of the Party" to Shade45 around October.

I listen to predominately underground and I'm finding new artists every week.

Some current underground I'm listening to:

Wade Waters: www.myspace.com/wadewaters
Mojoe: www.myspace.com/mojoefamily
Kidz in the Hall: www.myspace.com/kidzinthehall
Ohmega Watts: www.myspace.com/ohmegawatts
Strange Fruit Project: www.myspace.com/strangefruitproject
Brother Ali: www.myspace.com/brotherali
ScholarMan: www.myspace.com/scholarmantheofficial
One Be Lo: www.myspace.com/onebelo

You probably have heard of most of these guys, but the point is that there are so many quality artists out there. Go to www.smoothbeats.com and listen to their radio station sometime. You'll hear a lot of quality underground (most of the time) that should have a place on Sirius.

If there were to be a station for underground, where would the line be drawn? I wouldn't mind hearing Talib Kweli on there, but he's kind of in the middle of the road between underground and mainstream. Almost the same with Little Brother, MF DOOM, Jurassic 5 and maybe throw The Roots in there. They are all known for the most part, but get no play on Shade 45 or Hip-Hop Nation.

Maybe the underground channel could include B-sides of some older albums that don't get any play. 95% of Gang Starr's catalog, for example, is somehow missing from Sirius' playlists. I dunno, but something definitely needs to be done with these hip-hop channels. I have my favorite hip-hop artists on Artist-Seek, so I pretty much don't even listen to the hip-hop channels except for a few DJ shows.

Despite what Nas said, hip-hop is not dead, it just lives in the underground.

I hear the Roots on Shade and HHN, from proceed, to clones, to the new stuff. And Gangstarr too. I've heard stuff from daily operation, to hard to earn of course, and the ownerz too.

They could probably play more of groups like that too. It's hard when you play mass appeal, then the next song is Young Jeezy! Talk about losing a listener. I like the ch.65 the rhyme on XM and feel Sirius could do a channel that was more "classic" hip hop instead of just a lot of old stuff that was even marginal in it's day on Backspin.

I've been pretty much saying the same thing since 04. The Rhyme actually plays album cuts ranging from early 80's to late 99. Backspin is too focused on hip-pop tracks from the 90's that hit the top 40. They could add some grimey rap from the Loud/BadBoy/Death Row era and strip the "classic" tracks from HHN. Like I can hear Shook Ones 2 on The Rhyme but over at Backspin, they're playing some soft LL Cool J song.

RyanSirius will become famous soon enough

That being said, Backspin has become a lot better. It used to play only cheesy disco-rap from the very early days. They have added better songs, just not enough from the aforementioned classic era.
