That's too bad - I felt that one of the advantages of the service was that they had enough channels to serve ALL the demographics.

I can only hope that if enough of us raise our voices someone will hear us. Jazz/Rock, Fusion and related music deserves to be programmed "somewhere" on Sirius, don't you think?

Virtually everybody who has given it an honest listen, gives it a thumbs up. We'll wait a few weeks to make final judgement. If it doesn't end up being too repetitious, I believe it will be a worthy addition to the Sirius lineup.

However, I still don't think it's going to be a permanent channel. It'll probably be gone in a few months.

I can certainly understand the need to satisfy the bottom line and make decisions that cannot please everyone. I am in the minority of folks that regrets the loss of Planet Jazz. Considering many of that channel's artist base (Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis to name a few) were in the vanguard of jazz starting back in the 50's, they continued to innovate even when jazz purists dismissed their evolution into the more electric forms of jazz during the 70's and 80's which Planet Jazz embraced as a large part of their playlist.

Anybody who says the JazzCafe will be a viable substitue is nuts. It is much better that my local terrestrial version of the channel, but definitely not as adventurous. If they expand the playlist to include some of the artists that PlanetJazz played, then I would feel better about the decision.

If you want to do something positive with improving music programming, reduce the number of hip-hop channels spewing foul language, give me something other than 20+ rock channels of programming and tell me how Planet Jazz listenership could possibly be lower in the U.S. than say the BBC channel or the Canadian hits channel.

Merger channel discussion for anyone interested. Seems to settle nothing though.

I understand your cynicism, and I would basically share it, but what are we to do? Always assume that nothing will happen/no one will listen and just keep it to ourselves? then it will be a fair accompli...

I have to try to 'tilt against this windmill' because I care and want to see if others do.

I actually wrote to the Customer Care line and got a real response, not a form letter. Of course it didn't offer any hope, and just promoted that when I spent more time with the Jazz Cafe and The Spa I'd find things that I like. NO WAY they are a substitute for what Jazz planet offered. But at least a human read and responded to me, within 24 hours. That was encouraging.

I don't expect to changes things right away, but if we keep some dialog alive and all who care get in touch with them maybe, just maybe our voices will matter. Sounds kind of like the Democratic Process in action, huh?

I'm a Product Manager for a decent-sized company and I know I spend time lurking at our independent user forums to see what my customers want/need/are complaining about. Any company who doesn't is foolish. So I have to keep trying.

What about others?

Regards,

Jerry

They should have taken over Jam_On. Sirius really needs to have a revolving Artist of the week/month channel instead of getting rid of channels for this stuff.

I STRONGLE feel that the Dead channel should be permanent. It rules thus far.
But Jazz needs its channel back.

What I mean is - thus far the channel has been good. And if they are playing concert sets then it will take awhile to go through the stock.

But...could they ruin it? Yes.

As they have ruined (or never constructed) the offerings for my other type of music-electronic and dance. The repetition over there is completely laughable and they have 3 stations playing a lot of nothing but progressive trance.
So your concern is warranted.

I didn't notice Planet Jazz was gone until today. I'm not happy about it. I'm not a huge Jazz fan, but it was on my "B" presets and I have Jazz cravings from time to time. I wish Sirius wouldn't keep getting rid of niche channels. I've been beggin for them to add more niche channels (progressive rock, break up Sirius Blues into two or more channels). I guess I'll have to add Planet Jazz to the list of niche channels Sirius needs.

Sirius can't even get channel remapping right so somehow I doubt thet do something as intelligent as lurking here.

As for their Customer Care...I've sent emails with my concerns. All I receive is a standard form response saying my email is being forwarding to the appropriate department. A month later here I sit with no reponse still...terrible.

Angry I want Planet Jazz back!

Glad to see that there are some people who regret the loss as I do, but it's especially tough for me as it was my favorite music channel. I live in the NYC area where we have one broadcast jazz station - WBGO in Newark, which has a weak FM signal and for the most part caters to the more traditional jazz crowd. WQCD is the broadcast version of the Jazz Cafe, which to me is a misnomer in that it's closer to Muzak than "jazz". I can get as much R&B, hip hop, rock and oldies as I want on FM, albeit with a ton of commercials, but modern jazz is a niche that is not catered to on FM broadcast radio and sadly is now nonexistent for me.

I also wrote to the "customer care" folks at Sirius and got the same reply as a previous poster - don't be fooled by the "personal" touch, it's a generic response developed by the suits in corporate about catering to the market, providing alternative choices, blah blah blah. And the suggestion that I try listening to the Spa if I want to get my jazz fix. Baloney! And I'd like to know where they get their feedback from - no one asked me, a paying subscriber, for my opinion on what I'd like to hear.

Jazz Planet was the best music channel for me; that and the Stern show were all I needed to feel satisfied with my subscription price. Now I feel like the Sirius suits are no more than a bunch of bean counters along with the likes of Clear Channel, Infinity and the rest. It looks to me as if XM has always been the better choice when it came to the music programming, I felt that way when comparing the two services but ultimately Stern is what brought me on board with Sirius.

I don't care for the Dead at all - I recognize that I'm in the minority - and I respect the fact that there are surely plenty of people who are thrilled with the Dead channel. I don't have a problem with a single channel dedicated to any band or artist for a given period, after which another artist would be featured - it makes perfect sense to me. But at least you could catch the Dead on The Vault, Jam On, etc., and quite often as far as I can tell. The same holds true for multiple hip-hop, Christian talk, and those awful electronic dance channels - is there really a need for 3 channels of house music beats? Now there's nowhere on Sirius to catch Weather Report, Return to Forever, electric Miles Davis, etc.

Does anyone think there's a shot at Planet Jazz coming back in some form any time down the road?
