Default Bring back Vista!!

I for one sure wish Sirius would bring back Vista!

Now I'm brand new to Sirius, and have never actually heard Vista.

But I have done quite a bit of research over the last few days on sat radio, listened to the online streams extensively, and so on. Just bought a PnP3 tuner w/car kit for my largish sailboat. (Seems Sirius works throughout the Caribbean if one gets a good enough marine antenna setup -- unlike XM. As well as having better music streams, and MUCH better news streams.)

But classical should have both a serious symphonic and a serious chamber music channel, seems to me.

I would think that would bring them a whole lot more business (once they are past the very first adopter stage, which is where they may now be heading) than retaining every single one of the 40 or so Pop/Rock channels (not including Urban/Hip Hop/Dance).

Classical listeners like Jazz ones are really badly served by terrestial offerings. Many of them also have the scratch to not only support NPR stations, but also Sirius -- in the second wave of listeners.

My two cents...

Excellent post, with excellent arguments. We can only hope someone, somewhere, might actually be listening to our opinions.....

I would love to see Vista return but sadly don't think it will happen.

Thanks gbjb--

I have a feeling that as word spreads a bit more broadly re: sat radio many more classical, as well a jazz, listeners will start signing up.

Jazz is pretty well represented on Sirius seems to me. Relatively speaking anyway. Of course I'd love it if they could import some Phil Schaap WKCR shows, but that's probably dreaming. Sirius' swing channel is actually pretty darn good.

So is 80 seems to me. But there's really one ONE serious non vocal classical channel.

Just as NPR finds that in addition to "educational" issues they had better provide a health amount of classical for substantial parts of their contributor base, I imagine subscription based satellite radio is gonna figure that's a market worth catering more to pretty soon.

Hopin anyway. :\

BTW, where did you find your avatar? Got get me some kinda sailboat or similar!!

sailorguy - I wish I could answer that question. I have had it for a long while, and remember finding it on a German website, but when I attempt to follow the link to the actual avatar, all I find is this avatar, and not the hundreds of animated GIFs that were there when I picked this one.

If I find the link to the others, I will update this thread.

Yes, Vista is sorely missed.

I rarely use Sirius since Vista was eliminated a year ago.

They are missing the mark when appealing to customers who like Classical music.

I couldn't agree more, although for less honorable reasons. I would love to see Vista back so that we can dispense with the chamber music on Symphony Hall.

Sorry, but I just cannot warm to chamber music. Don't know why, really, because I play in a brass quintet. You'd think that I'd enjoy listening to chamber music since I play in a small group. But, alas, I don't.

Welcome to the club - my sentiments exactly. I know Icing's feeling are in polar opposition, and I do enjoy having my horizons broadened every so often, but........those were the days.

This discussion makes my head hurt.

Wait, I can play this game: how about removing all the Brahms/Schubert/Mendelssohn/etc. orchestral work from Symphony Hall? All that German Romanticism just bores me; it's like they took Beethoven's genius and bloated it to the point that all it can do is lumber around like an injured walrus on dry land. (just kidding; (really!) )

Or even better: drop Symphony Hall and replace it with "Atonal Alley" or "Modernist Manor". I know gbjb would tune in because they would use Bartok's "The Miraculous Mandarin" as the theme.

Well, maybe not polar. It's probably true that if given the choice, I'd listen to Vista more than Symphony Hall, but I certainly enjoy a lot of the orchestral repertoire. What kind of place would the world be without Ravel's orchestration to listen to?

Just so long as they play that piece at least once daily, or maybe lead off every other hour with it, or........

For those confused by now, the work Icing mentions is the only work I have heard on Symphony Hall that readily comes to mind when I think of a piece I simply do not understand. There just isn't anything there for me.

Even the Schnittke Violin Concerto of a couple of weeks ago, for example, has its redeeming qualities , but I have to work pretty hard at that one. The Bartok piece just escaped me.

I am happily enjoying the Schubert Unfinished Symphony at the moment, speaking of Germanic Romantics.......

Having a chamber music stream would not only set Sirius apart from XM, but would give classical fans something they could never get from the broadcast industry. I think it would attract a lot of new classical and non-classical subscribers.

The broadcast industry doesn't unerstand a very obvious fact. Orchestra music's popularily ended with the birth of rock and roll. Ever since that point, music has been dominated by small groups, because they are more intimate and personal. Broadcasters don't understand that we who like classical music, also like that same warmth and intimacy, which cannot be found in a large, booming, cold and personal 100 piece band.

Sirius had it right in the beginning with Vista and threw it out in favor of more rip rap and hip hop.

That event was the turning point for our relative dissatisfaction with the Sirius programming for inidiviuduals who enjoy classical music.
