Unhappy

For years I've enjoyed listening to Watercolors on XM 71. The music is the best Modern Jazz on radio...

The when I got Sirius, I was looking forward to hearing about the same type of music in Jazz Cafe. I was surprised to hear more singing on this channel, not the pleasant jazz I was used to hearing on XM.

Some of the music you'd hear on Jazz Cafe I wouldn't call Modern Jazz. Steely Dan? Give me a break. Steely Dan is not Modern Jazz.

Ricky don't lose that number?...

I've started listening again to Jazz Cafe. It's gotten better, but it's still not as good as Watercolors...

I agree, while I'm a huge Steely Dan fan, I don't much like to listen to them on the Jazz Cafe channel. The one thing that bugs me is that it seems as though whenever I turn on the Jazz Cafe, chances are is that I'll hear the same songs over and over again. Is Watercolors like that or is their playlist deeper ? Would it be worth changing services just for the Jazz and decades channels ??

Watercolors has a deeper play list. I don't have a trained Modern Jazz ear, but I do like what I've heard on Watercolors.

For me? No. There's a lot more to Sirius (NASCAR) that I like and it's not worth it to change.

But... I have been thinking once I pay off my bills, I may just turn my XM radios back on again...

XM's Watercolors, does not repeat any where close to Sirius's Jazz Cafe. Once in a while I hear a song duplicated but maybe only once a week and this channel is on in my house almost constantly. Watercolors is excellent.

If I hear Sade one more time I think I'm going to vomit.

I never cared for Jazz Cafe on Sirius. Too much smooth R&B. Plus Trinity on Watercolors makes the channel.

Sade was played 51 times last week - meanwhile Dave Koz (31 times), Mindi Abair (37 times), and Kirk Whalum (44 times) were played less.

Can somebody explain?

There's no explanation other than the Jazz Cafe's playlist is short and sometimes off-base ....

I listen to the smooth jazz channels on both Sirius and XM and there are things I like about both. I prefer the more "jazz" based focus on XM's Watercolors, which plays more instrumental smooth jazz and less of the adult contemporary vocal stuff. But my biggest complaint with Watercolors has always been that they play too much older smooth jazz that is too "light and airy" sounding. I don't care for all of the older 80's and early 90's stuff that is too "new age-y" sounding. I prefer the harder, R&B feel of today's smooth jazz (artists like Mindi Abair, Boney James, Kirk Whalum, Rick Braun, Brian Culbertson, Steve Cole, Walter Beasley, etc.) I don't care much for the older, lighter sounding stuff like David Benoit, etc.

So in a perfect world, I would choose the instrumental/jazz focus of "Watercolors", but I would prefer that it focused more on the "newer, more R&B flavored" smooth jazz sound like "Jazz Cafe" does. I like the instrumental stuff that "Jazz Cafe" plays better, but the problem is they don't play enough of it (because they mix in too many Adult Contemporary/pop vocal songs). So I'm kinda' mixed on my favorite. In a perfect world, I would mix the two together to create a channel that focused on mainly newer, R&B leaning smooth jazz instrumentals.

Default Would Prefer Playlist like SoftJazz.co.uk

I would prefer a playlist like SoftJazz.Co.Uk

Jazzcafe is too much R&B.
