Default Sirius Music Library, How BIG????

Anybody have an idea as to how large the Sirius Music Library is??? I've seen pictures of Kid Kelly in the "rack" room where it is filled with racks and racks of cd collections, I think it must be around 50,000 cd's maybe....also do you think they get them from TM Century or just from the artitist and record companies themselves. Thanks

My main question is whether or not Sirius has to pay royalties for the songs they play?

Default Royalties........

most likely, just like radio and tv stations, they pay money to ASCAP, BMI, and other music industry companies for the licensing rights.... that pay the artists for using the music on the station, just like when star wars is on network TV, they have to cut a check to the film company and director and such for attaining the rights to show the movie on television. Which is why sirius charges so much to the "business" user's who have sirius playing in their stores, they are broadcasting the signal to the masses, so you gotta pay up, same goes for those companies that have music on hold feature, you really are'nt sopossed to do that.

I am sure it is over 50,000 CD's with the varity of music that sirius plays man it must be over 2 million songs in their catalog and they are always adding new stuff (and lately adding alot of older stuff as well)

and where did you see that picture of kid kelly with the stacks and stacks of cd's I would like to see them stacks of CD's

Default Ascap BMI & Libraries

ASCAP and BMI used to send out annual montors that you had to fill out. It was for every song you played for a 5 day time span. It was a pain in the ass. When I first started in Radio, we hand scheduled the music using a card catalouge system for proper rotation. So I would have to copy all the music sheets then write them in the monitor. Once we convinced management to get RCS Selector, I could just print up the dys music , only having to rely on the mixers to give me their hour or two of hand written logs. The trick was if you didn't fill it out the first time, they re-sent it to you for only a three-day monitor, if you didn't respond to that one - they sent you another one for only 2 days, it was much easier.

As far as the library, I'm actually surprised that sirius hasn't gone to an audio vault system, all the music is stored on a hard drive. It makes it easier to share music between channels, makes sure the correct versions of records get played, CD's don't end up missing and makes naming conventions simple.

I'm certain they use audio vault (or something like it) for all regular programming, otherwise they wouldn't be able to voice track. The CD library is both a backup in the event of a major crash, and to supply music for special programming.

has anyone else noticed the improvement in song lists lately on almost every station? or is it just me. I listen to the following: (see sig)

and have enjoyed the variety the past week or so. Been a Lifetimer since Sept '04. Keep up the good work! Thanx Sirius!

In addition to this huge library of CDs, Sirius has a huge room of computer servers.

All the music that Sirius plays is digitized onto the computers. The music Sirius plays is not played off of CDs directly onto the air...it has to be digitized into the computer first.

This allows the DJs to use any of the many studios that Sirius has constructed to record their show.

They basically pull the song up on the computer and record their intro or outro to the song....assembling their entire show.

Sirius uses Prophet to run and sequence all the channels. I'm pretty sure its some verson of NexGen Digital series. oooo pretty.

Alex was it that far off topic.

Also (wispering)--I am sorry that you had to sell your car. But you can still post. I don't know that there is a requirement for Sirius listening times and number of posts that you are allowed.
