Well, I got a generic letter from CS:

Quote:
We got your email! Yes, in the last few days there has been some changes on a few of our channels. Due to our partnership with Sprint some of music channels will be offering censored music. FACTION//28, ALT NATION//21, FIRST WAVE//22 and HOT JAMZ//50.

Thanks again for your feedback. As always, your suggestion is being forwarded to our programming department for further consideration. If you have any more suggestions or comments...
My reply:

Quote:
Has anyone thought about how silly it is to censor Faction -- when the celebrity talk shows are digustingly raunchy at times -- and Alt Nation when A.D. talks about porn and asks for naked pictures of women every show?

To me it looks like quite a double standard to permit lewd and chauvinist comments from the male SJ's, but not the occasional swear word in a song.
Not that it will get me anywhere, but I feel better.

OK, I'm a little confused...we're just talking about the internet streams and NOT the regular SIRIUS service right?

Because you know there's no way in hell they're going to censor Faction...it's just not gonna happen.

I heard Megalomaniac by Incubus earlier tonite on Alt Nation, censored...what an abomination. What the hell happened to the whole " censorship_off music_on" campaign. Next thing you know, we'll be paying for damn commercials. I can't believe Sirius sold us all out for the glorification of Sprint. In the words of George Carlin, this is the kind of crap that "makes you wanna puke in your soup".

Ok this is very confusing...I just heard 99 Problems by JayZ on Faction and it was completely uncensored. ARE we just talking about the internet streams? Is it only certain times of day? I was listening on my PNP today when I heard uncut 99 Problems.

It's galling enough that they would edit anything other than the kids' stations, Hits1 and a few others that have been sanitized all along, but to do it so people can have yet another excuse to use their stupid little toy phones takes it to a whole other level of annoyance.

I just got my reply back from Sirius CS. I have been very disappointed with Alt Nation going to radio edited songs. Their solution though:

Quote:
For customers requesting uncensored music please refer to channels:
Shade 45(45), or Hip Hop Nation(40).
It is too bad I don't listen to that kind of music… Sirius_OFF

Wow...so is this what we can look forward to?! Only uncensored channels are Hip Hop Nation and Shade 45? That sure seems to be what the above email is implying and if that's the case I will not renew when my sub runs out. If I want to hear Howard I'll just do the InDemand TV thing. Do we even know if Howard is going to be truly uncensored at this point?!

Hopefully the email is just typical corporate ineptitude and most of the stations do indeed remain unedited. It's NOT a question of songs having to have profanity to be good, as has been ridiculously implied by some--it's a matter of hearing a song the way it was intended by the artist on stations that USED to be completely unedited. I will not pay for a service that is entirely pitched to be acceptable for 7-year olds. I have no problem with keeping the currently edited stations like Hits1 and Cracked Up the same as they have been for those who don't want to hear profanity. But to trash one of Sirius' main selling points for nothing more than a partnership enabling some worthless cell-phone doodad is unacceptable.

For what it's worth I called Customer Service to say kudo's for adding BBC 1- (The agent said that they are getting very positive strong feedback for adding it, I also called to complain about the proposal with these 4 channels- She also said that they were briefed it may happen- but they have been getting alot of feedback of subscribers saying they are not happy if this will happen.
If people don't want to listen set locks on the channels- why punish those who don't give a crap- That's what is advertised Commercial, uncensored music and entertainment- I am so sick and tired of this politcally correct attitude with the media.

I think that what he is asking is if you only hear censored music online, and not on the regular service. The answer is that it is on both because the same music is sent to the internet and satellite.

sirius is just like any other company - they will do whatever brings them the most profit. so don't be mistaken to think that they would never do this, or always do that.

at this point, people don't leave readily because they have hardware investments. so i suspect that their rationale is that they will make a lot more money being partners with sprint than they will lose from lost subscriptions.

and if at some point, they can make more money airing commercials than they lose from lost subscriptions, there will be commercials.

this is true of all companies - the bottom line is the only thing that matters.

Not that this topic hasn't been beaten like a dead horse....

Like many have said, it's the parents' responsibility to control their kids. Personally, I wonder WHY you would let your kid have a Satellite Radio in the first place. If you're in the car with them with you, turn it to FM or something. OR (since in the 2 days I've been here, I've noticed that a lot of times a song an be played on multiple statoins) why not have a whole category devoted to Family. This would include Religious/Education (like Discovery)/Kids/and the censored stations. This way, it appeals to families.

I believe (at least with my Sportster Replay) I have the option of skipping channels that I don't want to listen to. Maybe they can do something with this so you can add or skip whole categories.

I dunno, I've only been here for two days. I can tell you right now, if I had a kid, I would NOT want them listeing to Hard Attack or Octane. Then again, that would be my responsibility, not Sirius'. I'd hate to see Sirius censor DJ's and songs. That's what makes Satellite radio different from FM/AM radio. There's total and completee freedom on the music stations. (It sets the tone of the situation). I dunno.

The issue will never get resolved. Sirius has a decision to make, whether they sell out or stay true to their customers. They have to find a happy medium to be able to make a profit and keep customers happy. Obviously, they're pushing the lifetime plan because they know they have the customers for at least the life of the receiver and their money up front. Maybe this lifetime thing is both a blessing and a curse?
