Yes it sucks that we'll end up without Soundscapes for the washed up Rolling Stones.

I won't believe we are getting an Ambient/New Age channel until I see the update and hear it for myself coming from my tuner.

Anyone been listening so far? I thought I would get bored, but they're mixing up the big hits with a few obscure songs ("Dancing with Mister D." from Goat's Head Soup plus some great stuff from Exile on Main Street, which I think is the best rock album of all time). I haven't changed the channel in an hour. Hmmm, maybe this is a good idea...

My first gut reaction is this is stupid. However, listening to the channel, it isn't that bad. However, I still don't agree with these types of channels and programming. Sirius is going more and more into left field like XM does with odd channels. I liked the fact that Sirius was mostly all big, hit based, normal formats and I really hope they would continue this approach. I have XM and get so tired of stupid specials and artist features and crap when you just want to turn on a "normal" channel and hear regular music rotations. I really hope Sirius isn't going to start putting more and more special events and stuff on their music channels that interrupt regular stations. I would rather have more regular full time formats than stuff like "Elvis Radio" and "Rolling Stones Radio" that are specialty, artist specific channels. If this is the road that Sirius is going down, and we lose regular formats to junk like this, then I will no longer be interested. I kind of agree with the above assesment that Sirius seems to be "whoring themselves out to the highest bidder". Also, if we had to have another artist specific channel, hell, why not a special Beatles channel for awhile instead of the Stones. There have certainly been more requests on SBS for that than a Stones channel. (the only reason; Sirius can do a Stones channel and get free publicity at their concerts.) Please, Sirius, quit whoring around for media publicity at every chance, and just put on some decent structured formats that people can discover when they get Sirius. If Sirius is this despirate for media exposure, I'm afraid it doesn't bode well.
Anyway, with all of that said; don't get me wrong, I LOVE Sirius and prefer them over XM or FM anyday, but I am not very impressed with the road this seems to be leading to.

With all due respect to BRH, I don't think this channel is "junk". The Rolling Stones are among the most influential rock and roll musicians of all time (only ones that I can think of in the same group are Elvis, the Beatles, and maybe Led Zeppelin), and a lot of their music is epic, especially the late 60s/early 70s stuff. And if Sirius can get some exposure through the Stones' tour, then it might be a good thing.

Most importantly, this channel will only last a month. I think people are overreacting. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off so strongly or to call the Stones "junk". I actually do like the Stones and own several of their CD's, including the "40 licks greatest hits" disc. I don't have a problem with the Stones at all. I just don't like taking away a traditional formatted station and replacing it with one devoted to a single artist. I don't mind channels like "Radio Margaritaville" which plays a wide variety of artists and I like a lot, but channels like "Elvis Radio" and "Rolling Stones radio" that feature just one artists 24/7 seem a bit much to me.
Anyway, I understand that it is just a month, so that isn't too bad. Here's an idea; maybe when they do the update they'll create a channel that has a different featured artist that changes every week. That might be an interesting option.

Yeah, I'd totally be for that. That would work out well.

They say it's for a month or so, but wasn't the Elvis channel supposed to be temporary too ??

Can't do that - they have a contractual agreement with Graceland to play Elvis 24-7.

DAB, this isn't really directed at you, but you did use the phrase "washed-up." It really annoys me when people say, "eh, the Stones are too old to be playing." I'm not a huge Stones fan or anything, but I do like some of their stuff, but, what does their age have to do with it? As long as they are still on stage and rockin, and having fun, who the heck do people think they are to tell them to stop? Like I said, not trying to bust your balls in particular, but that's something that's always bothered me, and your quote seemed to fit.

Now, to stay on topic, I'm enjoying this so far today. It may get old after a while, but, hell, it's only a month. I'm a little bothered by the fact that people are bothered by this and not by the fact that there's an Elvis channel ALL YEAR ROUND, but whatever floats your boat I guess. I wouldn't mind seeing more stuff like this when a high-profile act goes on tour, as long as it was only once or twice a year. Anything that brings visibility to Sirius is ok with me, within reason of course.

Washed up has ZERO to do with ones age as much as it has to do with CURRENT popularity. I did a group this afternoon with a dozen 18 year and while some of them had heard of the Stones, only 2 had ever actually heard a song by them and needless to say was not impressed.

Like you there are a few songs by them I like, but my point was I love Soundscapes, much, much more than The Stones and I am not real happy about having to give up that for them and YES in my opinion they are washed up. I know they still have a following and I am sure they can still rock, but back when they were on top they weren't my cup of tea and they sure and heck aren't now. To those that are enjoying this channel, I am happy for you, but come Sunday many of us will be missing our weekly dose of Soundscapes.

Yeah, I feel you on the Soundscapes thing. Asking 18 year olds about an old rock band is like asking Batshitcrazy about politics. Wrong demographic. I just don't think somebody is washed up when they are packing stadiums, but YMMV, of course.

Yup.

The Stones have millions of fans aged about 35 and up. And that age group has far more financial power than all the teenagers in the country combined.

They're kicking off a major U.S. tour, in conjunction with their first new studio album since 1997. So mainstream and music media will be giving them significant coverage.

Sirius will get major positive publicity from this.

I listened to it for about 4 hours today.. I wanted to have channel 99 on at 9AM ET so I could hear the kickoff, but I forgot about it I didn't start listening until 11 AM ET..

I like the stones, but for me, the same group whether I like them or not tends to get boring fast.. After 4 hrs, I changed channels.. I guess I'll flip to it now and then, but I won't be a dedicated listener...
