Default Lineup Changes: Good or Bad?

Are occasional changes to the Sirius music lineup a good thing or a bad thing?

I voted a good thing (no surprise that we should disagree here too )

I don't mean to suggest that I agree with all of the changes each time. I also understand your concern about building lotalty. But I believe that, to reflect the changes in their listenership and our society as a whole flexibility is important. Also, this is a young service and they are trying to program over 120 streams from scratch, it should be no surprise that they wouldn't get it exactly right the first time. I would think that the number of changes in each line up change will come down over time and become pretty stable in a few more years.

Well, there's both good and bad things.

Here's my interpretation of the current upcoming lineup including the talk channels:

GOOD
The return of a New Age channel (Soundscapes) - spa73
Howard Stern channels
SIRIUS Weather & Emergency
SIRIUS Advice

BAD
Remix is gone
No Movie Soundtrack channel
Even more Christian/religious channels (Christian Talk, Revolution)
No Funk channel
No 100% Punk channel
Martha Stewart Living Radio
SIRIUS Shuffle - Yes, I'm judging it without even hearing it
Folktown is gone
Swing Street is gone
Slow Jamz is gone
Vacation is still gone

UNDECIDED
The Coffee House

I think it's safe to say that in the upcoming lineup - the bad far outweighs the good. I just hope the next one is better and they actually take the time to listen to the customer feedback given. As far as having these lineup changes every fall, I'm pretty much on the fence because we do occasionally get channels we ask for. But, it's not a good feeling knowing that the channels we love could be gone in an instant to make room for something nobody asked for.

BTW, I didn't vote because there's no"Neutral" or "Undecided" options.

Sirius has never been perfect. It is a good thing to try new things.

I think they definitely need to keep making changes to keep it fresh. It's exciting when you know changes are coming. Of course if they get rid of one of your favorite stations it would suck. I think the recent changes have been very smart (for the most part) by Sirius adding Margaritaville, BBC 1, Spa seventy-something. I'll only miss 1 of the deleted stations myself (Vacation), but I can do without it. I however DO agree that they shouldn't have gotten rid of any dance stations. I don't listen, but I think they've alienated quite a few people there. I think it's not good to have more conservative stations than liberal, but my opinion here is to get rid of one of the conservative stations, not get another liberal. I'm no fan of political talk. The whole us against them vibe really makes me ill. We may as well be 2 separate countries. That way we can just have a war with each other and get it over with. (please don't get mad at me, I'm not REAL serious about this.) How is it that ALL republicans suck and ALL democrats are fantastic? That's how it is on liberal talk. How is it that ALL democrats suck and ALL republicans are fantastic? That's how it is on conservative radio. Every time I've tried to listen to either I flip it on and hear "us" "them" "we're great" "they're idiots". WTF is that? us and them, that's just great. Let's all work together folks, yeah right...these days it's impossoble.

Oops, I got political again. I'm sorry

First of all, I'm entitled to my opinion just as much as you are. Just because you don't agree with me about Revolution does not mean you have to remind me EVERY SINGLE TIME! You've got your channel...be happy.

But, I'd be willing to bet that Revolution is there not because of this huge demand you claim it has, but simply to compete with XM's channel and "convert" more people over to SIRIUS. And from a business standpoint, that has nothing at all to do with customer wants or needs...just money.

If its run like a good business, customer wants and needs have everything to do with whether or not any channel is present or not. If it represents what the paying customer wants , it brings in money. It is possible Sirius adds or deletes things that they shouldn't- but from a business standpoint it does have to do with what we want to hear in the end- for any channel.

I guess another question is: Are they asking anyone about what changes, if any, people want?

For instance, did surveys goes out or are they monitorring channels online for use? Anybody know answers to this? Just curious...

Right AZJOE...Chad your right money is the name of the game. Your EXACTLY right. If they are going to make more money with this channel lineup then obviously customer needs were met. Thats just good sense. If the customers needs are not met, Sirius will lose money. I know everytime you hear the world Revolution you want to cry cause somehow you are offended. My point on my original post was that there is a demand for Christian rock and Sirius has met that demand. Therefore the customers have been listened to. YOU ARENT THE ONLY CUSTOMER. Just because you have not been listened to doesnt mean the majority of the customers havent either. Chill man, dont be so touchy, Ive never seen someone get their feelings hurt over a radio channel.

For me, I like some of the changes, but feel disinfranchised by some others. As a African American, and 47 years of age, I am losing some of my muscial formats. Others we have been clamoring for, are not being added. I do know that people of my ethnic background, age group and economic status, do desire these channels. That is why I added XM this week to cover what Sirius will not. Even here in Los Angeles, black radio is dying, being replaced by other minority formats.

I personally have nothing against any of the formats added, but I pause to wonder why such a audience that I keenly am aware of and represent, is not being served? In the time period I have been a subscriber to the Sirius family, I have felt more and more let down, instead of the other manner. I love what they offer, but I do wonder , which of my favorite formats (usually black-urban) is next to face the firing squad?

I pose this question for Sirius, who makes these decisions, and upon what basis? And are those in charge of such changes even black or is there a black input into the black urban programming changes? Do they really know what a substaintial portion of the listening audience wants?

I will not chide Sirius completely, I am happy with most of the programming, I am just trying to see things from the angle that they based their changes upon-- and I am having a hard time doing so.

I think that occasional changes are good, but Sirius has made too many for my liking. It shouldn't be hard to come up with a core of channels that represent what people want to hear - what's missing from FM - and then just subtly tweak that from time to time. But they've wholescale dropped entire genres (New Age, alt-country) and overloaded on others (rock).

The changes have just seemed a little meat-fisted or heavy-handed to me.

I may be in the minority, but I'm excited for Sirius Super Mix. I love the JACK FM format and it will be great to have a commercial free version on Sirius.

I'm not offended by Revolution at all...bring it on! Just shave the Christian programming to around 2 channels. I've said if before but I'm offended that there are 6 Christian/Religious channels while we continue to lose our current music channels. It seems that Christian programming, women's interests, and international programming are the only thing they care about recently. They don't seem to realize and or care about the R&B, dance, and folk music fans.

Well, if you think the majority of customers have been listened to, why don't you talk to ABOLLA, or just visit the Hip-Hop & R&B forum, the Dance forum, or the Jazz, Classical, Latin & World forum.
