Default What happened with The Kennedy's and Dharma Cafe?

Several folks have posted on different threads that the Kennedy's Dharma Cafe started onDisorder on Saturday and then went off the air. It has been implied that "politics" might have been involved. With the outcry about censorship and the loss of Folktown, I hope that technical problems were all that happened.

Anybody have more info?

They originally announced that their show would be on Disorder 24 on Saturdays 10 AM - 1 PM, and Sundays 11 AM - 2 PM (Eastern). But, when they came on, they were on Saturdays from 7 AM to 10 AM. The explanation was that this would be temporary for October only, but as of last week they were still on at the earlier time on Saturday. I think this will last until the Rolling Stones channel goes away.

In my opinion, I feel they have lost a lot of their "spark" since making the change to Disorder. Perhaps with the two separate shows they just aren't able to bet the momentum going the way ther were able to with the single six hour show before.

I agree, it sounds like The Kennedy's are't too sure if they still have their folk audience and seem un committed to the whole thing. I always get the feeling they have more to say, but are afraid to say it. It's a pitty, cause they certainly had a good thing going. They just don't sound happy there any more.

Default We need FolkTown format back, Coffehouse just doesn't do it.

CoffeeHouse just does not fill the void of FolkTown. The programmers of this station do not seem familiar enough with the Folk genre, to understand what it entails. CoffeeHouse is more like Starbucks, so the name suits it, but if it intended to make the Folktown listeners happy too, they are seriously wrong.

Folktown was a blend of Americana, traditional folk and bluegrass. Coffeehouse (siriusly)pun intended, barely touches those things that we loved. As in the previous post, it is more like "the Bridge", syrupy general acoustic music. Perhaps the programmers are too young to appreciate the nuances of this genre.

Look, if your do your Coffeehouse idea, fine, but find room on another station for the music that was Folktown.

The show ended at 9:48 today, followed immediately by the Celtic music show. This makes me think the show was voicetracked in advance, and either it was mistimed or started early. You really can't blame them for not wanting to be there at 7 AM on a Saturday morning, especially if they did a show the night before.

As for the Coffehouse channel, I don't think they understand the difference between a coffeehouse and Starbucks. A coffeehouse is a (usually) monthly event held in a church basement or the like, with live folk music and refreshments served before the performance and during intermission.

I only thought it was my imagination that something was missing.

I noticed the abrupt jump to Celtic Crush myself.

*giggle* The pre-recording is basically a running joke on the show. I remember in their former 6 hour format, they would be giving their concert calendar and would get to their own show and would say "And tonight at 7 PM, we're playing in Ames, Iowa", of course, at that point, it was nearly 2 PM on the east coast.

In 2004, they played on Saturday afternoon at the Colorscape Colorscape Arts Festival in Norwich, NY. They went on at about 3. I had listened to The Dharma Cafe on my way down to the show. I talked to them before they went on and giggled that I had just been listening to them on my trip down. (At that point, they were still actually on-the-air).

Yes, The Dharma Cafe is pre-recorded. If you listened to the live DJ's on FolkTown, once in a while (on Tuesdays), they might have mentioned that they "just saw The Kennedys"

But, there have been times when they did do the show live. One time I sent them an e-mail during the show, and they made reference to it later in the same show.
