Default Pure Jazz 72

I have been enjoying Pure Jazz 72 for the past week. This station is so much better than the XM straight ahead jazz station. The programmers here exhibit taste playing the cuts that a near forty years of intense jazz listening subscriber can appreciate. Some may critisize the programming for not playing avant garde music. That view is naive. The audience for that style of music is too small. They play tasteful hard bop and swing, the jazz mainstream. The DJs are knowledgeable, unlike the embarrassingly uninformed jazz hosts on the XM jazz station. I remember Les Davis and Rhonda Hamilton from WBGO out of Newark, the jazz station in the NYC area. I listened to them over twenty years ago before I moved to Atlanta from NYC. Now only if Sirius could improve the sound quality of its signal. I would be very happy.

I also really like Pure Jazz and think the DJs are well-informed. Les Davis and Rhonda Hamilton offer interesting insights into the music and artists without too much DJ blabber.

I especially like The Blue Note Hour with Bruce Lundvall.

Like most Sirius stations, I think I notice just a bit too much repetition.

I wouldn't, however, rip XM's Real Jazz, which I also enjoy very much.

I live in an area with no jazz programming on AM/FM radio and now thanks to satellite radio, I have two excellent stations to chose from.

I am a hard core jazz person. I worked in the industry for over twenty years. I tend to be more critical than some people. I really appreciate quality. What I like about Serius is that Pure Jazz focuses on the core canon, the innovators as opposed to the copy cat of the month. The music pplayed is to me more intersting. I hated to be bored.
