R.E.M. -- Yes. I like to reward bands that have maintained their success over many years.
Ronettes -- borderline No vote. I wasn't around at the time, but I would not like to see a band inducted mainly on the basis of one song (which they probably did not themselves write)
Patti Smith -- Yes. I'm not a fan, but she influenced many.
Stooges -- No. Not enough commercial success.
Joe Tex -- No. (I'm not too familiar with him)
Van Halen -- Yes. Very successful and highly influential. Eddie VH is one of the all-time guitar greats.
While it says "Rock n Roll" Hall of Fame many inductees and nominees of the past are not just rock- they are pop, soul, jazz, country, blues and more. My votes on the nominees for this year:

CHIC- yes
DC5 - BIG Yes (way past due)
Grandmaster Flash- No
REM- No (maybe in future)
Ronettes- Yes
Patti Smith- No
Stooges (Iggy Pop)- No
Joe Tex- Yes
Van Halen- Yes

Only 5 get in,those are my choices

Joe,
Yeah, I guess I do tend to favor rock artists. Actually, if I had to change one vote from my initial post, I'd change my vote for Patti Smith to "No".
That would leave me with only three "Yes" votes, which I'm fine with. Just my opinion --> if they keep letting in five per year, it will dilute the honor.

If I had to predict what the actual voters will do, here goes...
Dave Clark Five, Van Halen, the Ronettes, Chic, R.E.M.

(Good thread, Road Hog!)

Another slap in the face to the classic Brit rockers who actually challenged the Beatles at times. I give up......

This is sad. They are a great band and should have gone in the RRHOF long time ago...

Yeah, the Dave Clark 5 was the biggest snub this year. Maybe next year.

REM is my favorite band of all time. So thumbs up for me. They were the greatest band in the 80's-90's alternative rock wave. (Maybe a close second after U2)

Is there a better American rock and roll band than Van Halen? (Aerosmith? CCR?)

They are one of my favorites, but the band has really gone down hill since Bill Barry left the band...

That's exactly what I think too. That was the "jump the shark" moment for this band. I never realized how much he contributed to the band's sound until he left. Nevertheless, they are one of my top five bands of all time.

I thought about them, but they're more pop-rock. I guess Van Halen is a great (the best?) American hard rock band.

Yeah, they tanked after Bill Berry left, although I never really cared for anything post-Green with or without Bill. Though "Me in Honey" from Out of Time is a great tune. Not very REM-like, but a great tune.

How many bands has the drummer killed due to his departure, untimely or otherwise? Zeppelin, the Who...thank God that Ringo didn't die young. (insert black humor emoticon)

Of course, Spinal Tap was able to go through a succession of drummers.

As for best American hard rock band, I think Aerosmith edges out Van Halen. I'd put Nirvana and Foo Fighters ahead of VH also.

Another American hard rock band to consider: the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Technically they were a band, even though most people only think of Jimi.
