Default Air America and Sirus Hardware

I am new to satellite and i just subscribed to XM 2 weeks ago. I was debating over Sirius or XM but due to AAR being soley on XM, that was enough for me. Air america doesn't really have an affiliate in philly, only franken and rhodes are aired and the wattage is terrible.

I am thinking of getting sirius too as well, thats why i'm on these boards. I like what sirius and xm bring to the table and it sucks for us consumers to have to worry about each company getting sole ownership of a certain program..NHL, MLB, NFL ect... I enjoy all radio. If your a radio fan, why not get them all?? Figure it's only 20 some odd dollars for both services, that's not bad in my book. Only downside is buying more hardware.

Any suggestions for a portable unit for Sirius? I would like something i could use anywhere, car home and walking.....thanks guys.

The only Sirius tuner that's halfway portable and available now is the Xact XAC-XTR1 tuner:

To make it portable, you have to get the power pod, which includes an antenna and rechargeable battery:

There is a fully portable Sirius tuner called the ReGo on the way, but it could be anywhere from a month to 5 months away. Sirius has said that they expect to have a few portable tuners out by the first quarter of '06.

thanks for the info, one of the big reasons I ended up first getting xm was the Pioneer XM2go Airware unit. I really liked that unit and it drew me in. I am hoping that sirius will come out with something simular soon. Preferably something that comes with all the home car and portable accessories. I guess I can wait and see what comes out in the near future.

I have heard that those receivers do not work as well as how they are advertised. Can you give us an honest review on the XM portible.

There weren't many reviews out there before i bought it but I am happy with the Pioneer
Airware. Here are some pro and cons:

The kit doesn't come with a portable antenna, both the car and home antenna can only be used
when in the home cradle and car cradle. On the side of the unit there is a jack to plug an
antenna in (without a cradle) but you must order one separately because the home and car
antenna are only compatible with the cradle antenna input.(Sorry, im trying to explain this)
I find this a pain in the arse because if I want to take it upstairs, my home cradle is all
hooked up downstairs and I have to unplug the home antenna (which I have in such a fashion
that makes it a pain) and cradle with me. What I have been doing is placing the unit in the
window sill and using my clock radio I use the units FM modulator.

The FM Modulator is very good, just as the reviews have said. The sound is better than a CD,
IMHO. I haven't had any problems getting the signal to my radio. The outputs on the back
of the home and car cradles work good as well. In my home setup, I use the cables it comes
with to plug directly into my surround system that I use for my Hi-Def.

The remote it comes with is "okay". When on my couch, the remote signal could be a stronger.
I find myself getting up sometimes to get closer to the unit to change channels.

The presets are laid out in a nice fashion. The preset button allows you to use "direct"
channel input or presets A, B, and C. I use A for talk, B and C for music. Using the remote
once you know your presets is easy but it would be nice for a "display output" that you
could hook up to your tv so that you can browse the unit without having to get up to look at
the screen. This is all pretty much convenience factors that would be nice to capitalize on.
Maybe Sirius has something in store soon????

I love the feature of recording up to 5 hours of audio that I can plug into my PC and record
to an Mp3. Also, there is a memory feature to take a snapshot of the screen in case you hear
something and want to know the title of at a later date. The one problem I have with these
features is the ability to delete selected recordings or snapshots. If you want to delete,
it's all or nothing. This is a pain because I have hit record by accident and would like to
delete. Otherwise, it's great to replay songs that you are in the mood to hear whenever you
want. You just have to browse to them. Again, another convenience factor that would make
sense to have.

I find myself also using the Info feature, where i can customize a stock ticker that will
either scroll or display line by line. Also, you can customize all sports teams you like to
scroll or display line by line for updates and scores.

The main difference why I went with the Pioneer Airware unit instead of the Delphia MyFi and
the Tao handunit was reception. I read before I purchased that the portable reception
outside with no antenna was much better and improved. I have found that to be true. I am
guessing it has a lot to do with your location. I go for jogs (have to loose some pounds if
you know what i mean) and the unit works great. It comes with a leather pouch and a hard
plastic pouch to strap onto yourself. I would be nice if the unit included an arm strap, but
that is something you can get elsewhere.

As of August 1st, pioneer hasn't offered any separate items for sale for this unit. Meaning
if you destroy your car antenna or another accessory, your SOL. Hopefully you can find it
on ebay but if not, your will have to buy generic, and I could not find many accessories on
the net.(mabey you can but I had no luck last week.) Some additional accessories would be
nice.

That's pretty much all I can think of for now. I must say that overall it is giving me a
great satellite experience with a few minor inconveniences. The audio is great and the
ear buds sound and work nicely. (Although i fell asleep with them the other night and my ears
were killing me!!). Out of all the other portable units, and I have seen and heard them all,
I would recommend the Pioneer Airware. Hopefully Sirius gets a unit from Pioneer but I
don't know with all the damn lawyers and contracts these companies have. Last but not least,
I went to pricegrabber.com and picked up the unit for a little over 200. Be careful because
the price can range from around 200 to over 300. Forget about stores like best buy and the
like, they are ripoffs , but thats just my opinion.

I hope this helps, I know it's tough to get an honest review on anything out there with all
the kickbacks and "biasness".
