Default Why the PSAs on Satellite????

I realize that SIRIUS doesn't have squat to do with the production of many shows they carry.

I realize that many of those shows are also broadcast on terrestrial radio, and are bound by different regulations.

But WHY IN THE SCREAMING BLUE FUNK do they run those droning and preachy "Partnership For a Fun-Free America" Public Service Announcements on their in-house stuff?

They are under no legal obligation.

If they are doing it for public relations, they REALLY need to rethink that. Most of us came to SIRIUS to escape that insipid sanctimonious drivel along with other FCC jackassery.

They appear to be getting a lot worse just recently; almost twice the frequency as just a few months back. Anyone else noticing this?

Um ... unless I'm greatly misled, there is no $$$ in running (P)ublic (S)ervice (A)nnouncements provided by tax-exempt and/or government organizations. On terrestrial radio, it is mandated to keep up the illusion of a public commons. Stations have to turn over X amount of time for the public welfare. I cannot see why this needs to apply to SIRIUS and think it sets a BAD(tm) precedent if SIRIUS is merely doing it for positive PR.

Actually I think SIRIUS is required under their FCC license to run nationwide PSA's. Why would that be surpising when they require local FM's to do the same thing, but their PSA's are more localized. In my opinion as long as these things are on talk channels only, I am fine with them.

Then I'm obviously misunderstanding the legalities and am eager to learn more ... for instance, why does the FCC have any grasp whatsoever over SIRIUS?

The license for SIRIUS to broadcast on the bandwidth spectrum for which it uses ALL provided by the FCC. SIRIUS had to pay big bucks to the FCC for that spectrum, just as XM did. You may want to read the history of sat radio, there are several web sites on the web if you do a search. While clearly not all the same rules apply to Sat Radio that apply to FM, I just am just assuming they are required to do the national PSA's as part of their license.

XM used to run PSA's like they were going out of style. Now with over 5M subs, they don't play them as much. They have regular businesses lining up to advertise on satellite radio. I'm sure with more subscribers, they won't play them as much.

I agree with you, I think they sort of use them as gap fillers for while until they can replace them with ads.
