McMullen's a persistent guy who's always had a way of landing on his feet. For his fans, that's a really good thing.

He's done great work. I used to listen to gay.com radio too.

Maybe they could put Michelangelo Signorile in JM's old time slot. I never get to listen to Michelangelo because I'm at work.

I agree that OutQ should play less music. I never listen on the weekends although I'm glad they do requests and dedications.

Post More good programming, please!

I always thought John's program was one of the best on Out-Q. What with varied guests every week and a keen eye on the gay community, he presented a current and concise view of our community.
Now he's been replaced by -- more damned music! Hey - we already have a hundred channels of music. I joined for Out-Q. When I want music, I've got tons of CDs and 2 400 disc changers.
MORE gay talk radio!!! Now the HRC is on XM and we're left with DeCaro and Signorile. Michael is good, but one good host for a whole channel? C'mon Sirius, get with it!
Just my rant at being really disappointed.http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum.../pornoface.gif

I'm with you. I wasn't a big fan of John's show but was able to get occasional entertainment value out of it depending on the guest. But now the station is completely unlistenable after 10 p.m. (what's HRC?)

His show was occasionally interesting, but I unfortunately agree with the paint drying quote. However, I'd rather listen to paint dry than the waste of bandwidth that is being spewed out in that timeslot now.

Sunset cruise is nauseating but an interesting change of pace ONE night a week, but six nights a week? Bleh. Doesn't Sirius already have a soft-rock-and-less station that plays that kind of saccharin laced drek?

I'd rather listen to Marlee Matlin have a conversation with someone with tourettes.

Angry Very bad business

IMO Sirius made a bad move by letting JM go. There are many of us who followed JM from Gaybc to Sirius. I hope they know that many of us will also follow him to the next venture. If it wasn't for D and R, I would have chucked Sirius already. Guess we'll have to wait and see if a new XM radio is in the future. By the way, lose the music on 106. If I want tacky bathhouse music, I'll visit one.

Default Wow...

I guess I'm in the minority as far as liking John's show (although I'll admit it was a lot better when David Guggenheim was on it). He's a large part of the reason I became a SIRIUS subscriber, they used to stream OutQ free online 24/7 a couple of years ago. That gave me a chance to hear what uncensored talk on satellite radio was like in real time (unlike the pre-recorded looped samples XM offered on their website). The McMullen and Signorile shows became a part of my daily routine, so the first thing I did when I moved from an apartment into a house where I was allowed to put an antenna on the roof was to buy a SIRIUS radio and become a subscriber.

Anyway, here's the latest update from McMullen's website:

Quote:
December 6, 2006 --UPDATE--

The King of All Gay Broadcasting will soon be returning to the microphone. It has been more than two weeks since the John McMullen Show ceased operations at SIRIUS Satellite Radio's OutQ 106, the station McMullen created in early-2003. Thousands upon thousands of e-mails from SIRIUS subscribers have flooded in since we first reported that John left SIRIUS on November 20, 2006.

While much speculation has been communicated in these e-mails and on public messages posted throughout the Internet, McMullen is declining the opportunity at this time to address the specifics of his separation from the company he was first to put on the talk radio map. "My mom has always told me that if you don't have something nice to say, try and hold your tongue," he said. "There is a time and a place for everything, and for now, I choose to let my legal counsel direct what and when anything relating to the past will be discussed publicly."

The John McMullen Show will resume in the new year from a new home. John is also collaborating on another program expected to reach a national audience in early-2007. More details will be released on Tuesday, December 26, 2006.

In the meantime, if you would like to e-mail John, write to: heyjohn@johnmcmullen.com. You may also sign up for the John McMullen Newsletter, which will be going out again on December 19 with news of what's coming up next. To sign-up, send an e-mail to: newsletter@johnmcmullen.com. If you would like to join the John McMullen Show friends at MySpace go to: www.myspace.com/johnmcmullenshow.

John would like to apologize in advance if you do not receive a personal reply immediately. The overwhelming amount of mail during the past two weeks has made it hard to do much more than read and feel proud of all that has been accomplished together with you, the listener.
By the way planetahead, HRC is the Human Rights Campaign (a gay rights organization) who now have a show on XM called "The Agenda".

OutQ had already dropped a certain amount of the weekend circuit party stuff around the time of DJ Louis Morhaim's passing in July, and they canned the jockless, eclectic 'All Mixed Up' in favor of weekday talk show repeats.

People who think the queer community somehow makes bad music should give an intensive listen to JHo's show overnights. It's an amazing show which taps into a vibrant indie scene in addition to mainstream artists. His 'Hot 20' is also nice, but the interesting stuff tends to be on the all night show.

BTW, RIP Mr. Morhaim, an outstanding DJ and a nice guy.

Hi, Teresa! I recognize your name from the Mike Malloy board (I don't post there but I used to lurk just to read BinaBecker's posts when she used to hang out there).

I don't know how reliable this is (it IS Wikipedia, after all [heh heh]) ,but I came across this in John McMullen's Wikipedia entry:

Quote:
It is speculated that McMullen had a series conflicts over the direction of the station's programming and advertising sales for more than two and a half years with Sirius Vice President of Talk Programming Jeremy Coleman, who McMullen was responsible for having been hired into the position. Coleman and Sirius Executive Vice President of Programming Jay Clark reassigned McMullen's management duties, making Dave Gorab the Program Director, when McMullen did not take down or reprimand the board operator, Ben Sparks (a personal friend of Coleman's) responsible for putting a poster up in one of the OutQ studios that said, "F**k Bush! Not Innocent Prisoners" during the Abu Graib scandal in July 2004.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McMullen

...and McMullen posted the following himself on a MySpace OutQ message board:

Quote:
I want you to know that while I'm not talking publicly at this time about the details of my departure (on the advice of legal counsel who are looking after my best interests), it was the culmination of an ongoing effort that had spanned more than two and a half years of crap I have had to endure while keeping a nice shiny smile on my face...I don't give up. I never have. I stand up for what is right and become an evangelist for these values. It won't surprise any of you, I'm sure, to know that it was in this spirit that my employment ended up being terminated, just one year after the company terminated my partner's employment simply because we moved to California, as an act of spite by two out-of-control executives.

EDIT: Someone posted a rumor on the same board that John was restarting GayBC with Cheryl Barcenas, the placeholder on the website seems to indicate something new is coming up.

Also, McMullen has updated his website yet again with a pre-recorded looped message (click on the headphones in the upper right corner to listen).

You mean "jeremygrinch.gif"? Yeah, I hadn't noticed that until you pointed it out. Becky Juro (transgendered activist, OutQ guest and an alleged participant in McMullen's rumored GayBC revival) just posted on the aforementioned OutQ/MySpace message board the following:

Quote:
Hey everyone,

John's going to be doing a special LIVE holiday show this coming Wednesday, the 20th 9-11pm eastern, 6-8pm pacific!!

He's not going to be revealing any secrets on this special show, but you can be sure it'll be a lot of fun and a chance to hear John on the air again before it's time for his big news!

Just go to his website (which is newly updated) http://www.johnmcmullen.com and click on the headphones at the top of the page to listen...you can also go there right now to hear a special message from John!!

Don't miss it...it's gonna be good!!!

It sounds as though his move to California was frowned upon by Sirius. If that's the case, I'm afraid I have to side with Sirius.

For example, my company has an office in Sacramento, and my duties could be performed perfectly from there. But the fact is my company states that my job is here in Houston. So no matter how badly I want to move to Sacramento, I simply can't.

If the Wikipedia post is right, It also sounds like he has a problem with authority, like when he didn't take down the poster as told.

If all this is true, I can't help but be sympathetic, because I detest micro managing. However, in order for me to keep my job, I have no choice but to kiss the feet of "the man". It sucks, but that's just the way it is.

That said, I do miss John's show. I actually started listening to him regularly two months before they fired him. I kinda kicked myself for not listening to him sooner.

Default The Best Is Yet To Come...

Don't believe everything you read, especially about John McMullen. He's got plenty of supporters..and plenty of enemies.

That said, don't disbelieve everything you read about him, either!

They said John was finished when GAYBC went under, and they were wrong. They said OutQ would never survive, and they were wrong about that, too.

Regardless of whether you like John himself on the air or not, one thing that's undeniable is the man is a bonafide genius when it comes to creating this kind of radio. If there's anyone who could compete against and blow away OutQ in listenership, it's the guy who created OutQ in the first place.

The best is indeed yet to come...I suggest regular checks of his website at www.johnmcmullen.com and especially on the day after Xmas...

2007 is going to be a very interesting year for GLBT radio...

John's OutQ Show was the one that IMHO represented the best of the gay communities. Occasionally riveting, occasionally boring, but it was almost always of value.

Compare his show to that of Derek and Romaine. Four hours of ego-driven potty talk. And BORING. If anyone should have been shown the door, they should have been.

OutQ was one of the reasons I bought Sirius over XM. Still a good move I think, but they lost something when John's show was cancelled. I hope his eventual permanent replacement is a talk show and not music. While I like Sunset Cruise on Sunday nights, six nights a week is overkill. And OutQ sounds like AM mono--not a good environment for music anyway.
