Default John McMullen Fired

According to a message on his website, John McMullen has been fired by SIRIUS. Even though I'm not gay, he was one of my favorite talk show hosts on SIRIUS. Anyone have any idea why this happened?

Quote:

November 22, 2006

Dear Friends,

I have been overwhelmed by the enormous outpouring of love, support and encouragement from the e-mails that have been flooding in since I learned that my employment was being terminated by SIRIUS Satellite Radio. In this business, you go to work each day hoping that you hit topics that will resonate with the audience and that those people will return day after day. Your words have made it clear that what my show has inspired over the past four years is thousands of incredible relationships with each of you being touched sometimes in similar ways, and sometimes quite differently.

Many of you have asked if I will resume my program, even if only on the Internet for now. And, the answer is... Soon. The events of the past week have been as stunning for me as they have been for many of you. As you might expect, there is a period of grieving following the initial shock of the circumstances. When I resume our get-togethers and rejoin you from behind the microphone, I am not going to be interested in talking about what has transpired. I want to talk about the same kinds of issues and topics that drove the John McMullen Show to be one of the most popular programs on satellite radio.

I have read the sadness and anger in many messages. I don't think it's productive to embrace all of the negative feelings, which come so naturally in such a scenario. I'm grateful for your expressions to me, but I would kindly ask that you reconsider your thoughts about expressing these feelings to SIRIUS at this time. They are not going to offer me the opportunity to resume my job there. There were good times and not-so-good times during my four-plus years with the company. I am proud to have the distinction of being the first Talk Show Host and Talk Program Director in the history of SIRIUS. I am proud to have launched the company's very first internally-owned & operated talk station, SIRIUS OutQ. I am proud to have sold the first and largest major sponsorship on the Talk platform at SIRIUS to Subaru, whom I have been proud to be associated with and represent their fine vehicles for the past 2.5 years. I am proud to have been the first SIRIUS Programming employee to have played a critical role in the success of landing an OEM agreement with an automobile manufacturer, with the addition of SIRIUS as a factory-installed option in certain Subaru models beginning in 2006. But, none of these accomplishments would have been possible without your role as a subscriber and listener. I may have given birth to OutQ, but together we have nurtured it.

Since I launched SIRIUS OutQ, I have had the pleasure of meeting thousands of listeners and prospective subscribers at dozens and dozens of events. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to host programs from events like the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, Gay Days at Disney, ABC Super Soap Weekend, NGLTF's Creating Change Conference, the United States State of the Union Address, Out & Equal, and Gay Games 7. We originated the show from New York, Miami Beach, Orlando, Washington, D.C., Boston, Cleveland, Lexington, Nashville, St. Louis, Kansas City, Topeka, Tulsa, Colorado Springs, Denver, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Tucson, San Diego, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. More than 2,000 newsmakers, celebrities and interesting people from all walks of life were guests on my show since we debuted on April 14, 2003, on OutQ. It was a good run!

I need to take a breather. I have to begin working on a means to make a living again. But, I will be returning to talk with you in a way that will permit us to reach even more people than before. Check back here often, or better yet, sign up to receive my newsletter as information becomes available. It's not far away. I have the ability to resume programming immediately from my studio here in southern California. But, I simply want to catch my breath and be ready to give you something even better than we've had together to date. Great things lie ahead for us and I can't wait to start talking with you again. Soon!

Heard the news, but can't say why due to confidentiality.

I am saddened to hear the news. John is a wonderful, caring, and kind man who I consider to be a friend. I wish him much continued success in the future.

While I appreciate what he has done, his on air personality had all the entertainment value of hearing paint dry.

I unfortunatley agree about his show.

Was he still program director when he was fired? I think Outq as a whole was run very well and has some of my favorite content on Sirius. I thought he had a big part in creating that.

Wonder if they wanted to just cancell his show and he did an all or nothing deal?

I hope he didn't lose his job going to bat for Outq in the morning. That show would not be worth defending if Sirius was going to cancell it.

John was relegated to Talent-only status earlier this year.

Now this 'sunset cruise' thing they have on in place of him is completely unlistenable. And this whole only playing songs by people with a openly gay person in the group? Blech. Gay people can be lousy musicians as well as anyone. If they have to play music on OutQ, errrrrr, don't play music on OutQ.

Man, who knows what happened here. I would guess however, that there was a disagreement with something or he broke policy and Sirius was somewhat forced to fire him.

I heard on The Frank DeCaro Show (Featuring the Lovely Doria Biddle), that Kathy Sanchez was going to be around.

What do they have for evening program tonight? Maybe Kathy will have her own show...

I couldn't disagree more -- John was the only OutQ host who didn't seem to be in it for the sound of his own voice and for outrage for outrage's sake.

Sorry to see anyone fired, but I found his program BORING. He gave details to the nth degree. Just way to much info and the monotone way of speaking was sure to put me to sleep while I was driving. I have friends who felt the same way (I know people liked him, but that was our feeling on the show).

I really wish they would get rid of Larry in the morning too.

Bring back Harrison ..

Anyway, I hope they put something interesting on in his place.
