Default Phil Hendrie

I'm sure the topic of Phil has been talked about many times around here since his retirement but bear with me. I know Phil had average ratings and a average salary to match in his time on terrestrial radio which no doubt is the reason he left to pursue acting. Assuming his upcoming show fails (Three Strikes... a comedy about baseball) I'm assuming Phil would be ready to go back to radio, since his small part on the Unit isn't really going to pay the bills. Sirius would be a fool not to offer Phil his own channel, since I'm fairly certain Phil has the rights to all his own stuff. While I don't know if Phil would generate a avalanche of subs, if Sirius promoted him correctly Phil could easily grow and grow to the point that it becomes one of the biggest channels next to Howard. I think though, that Sirius would low ball Phil, and in the process not convince him to come over even if Phil doesn't find a permanent place in tv land. Though it's also possible Phil would be willing to come over for less than a big payday, but he is getting up their in age and maybe can live without ever going back to radio. I would say the odds of Phil landing on Sirius are at about 50 percent, I'd say lower but Phil was sounding like he did want to go to satellite radio in his final few days, though he mighta meant for Howard Stern type money.

He's smart enough to know he's not going to get Stern money. But, I do hope XM or Sirius can find the bucks for a two hour interview show or commentary show for him someplace. He's such a smart guy and interesting to listen to. In the days after 9-11 when he was doing serious interviews it demonstrated his abilities to do more than comedy.

Then we could have some real talent on the Sirius Stars channel finally. I am all for that.

he would certainly be a bright spot. I do wonder how his particular style would do on a satellite only venue. I dont think you get as many "accidental listeners" as you would on terrestrial radio.

You all have gotten me curious about this guy...never heard him before...here's my two cents.
I can't see him workin on H100 or H101 for the simple fact he does not sound desperate enough...I don't know about sirius itself but it seems on howards channels if you come to the table with leverage (an audience or marketability) then they won't pay you...ie bubba, ferrall. Each of them were "down and out" so to say and h100 got them for a song. Anyway I hope I'm wrong....this cat sounds interesting and with howard seemingly all but gone we the listeners need all good radio folks we can get.
Amen brothers...

I'd be surprised if either his ratings or salary was 'average'. He was a huge radio talent and was syndicated just about everywhere. I figured he just got bored and wanted to do something different.

I'd love to see him come back to radio. He'd be a great fit on Howard 101.

Phil is just funny period, I've probably laughed the hardest when he's just talking to the retard in the studio or doing bits like that car dealer promotion he was forced to do by management. Hearing him talk about serious stuff isn't exactly the highlight of his show, but anyways my point being that even though the 'accidental listeners' as you call it are a big part of his show he doesn't need it, and it would be interesting to see Phil take his show in a new direction. But I have no doubt there's a lot of stupid Sirius listeners, but Phil might have to just give in and put on the odd call from someone he knows gets it if he does insist on going back to that, and if you've heard his really old shows where he let a lot of callers just participate in the fun it didn't ruin the bit, it was still funny.

from what I've gathered from Phil talking about 1 million people listened to him. Which is deffinately not bad, but it's not near the number I thought it was, certainly not what he deserved. Also from hearing Phil talk about his salary it didn't sound like he was making too much, but he could've just been downplaying it.

That's what I was thinking. I don't think his show would be as good on satellite since he wouldn't get nearly as many calls from clueless listeners. He would still be funny, but it just wouldn't be as good.

One of the great things about him is his flexibility. He can do interview radio just as well as his comedic routines. I would hope a new show would combine both.

I'd rather hear him as a headliner on Stars. Stern has a history of being pretty brutal to anyone he sees as threatening and I'd hate to see Phil on a channel that Stern has control over.

Phil may be too cerebral for H100 or H101. His show would be amazing on satellite, but he wouldn't get the 'accidental listeners'.

exactly, and the success of the show he does depends on the accidental listener. he is talented and can do other types of shows, but to do THE phil hendrie show he needs those callers.
