Default AAR Saved, Franken Out, Hartmann In, SIRIUS ... ?

Surprised nobody's heard the news that a megabucks real estate developer whose brother ran for mayor of New York City just bought Air America -- and that Al Franken will be leaving to run for the Senate on Valentine's Day.

The third shoe to drop is that Thom Hartmann will be replacing him on the AAR network.

So, where does that leave Thom and Talk Left? I don't see AAR allowing Thom to run on both with their exclusive to XM, and while it's only one hour in the afternoon, the thought of exposing my speakers to more shreeding with Lynn Samuels' shriek is very uninspiring.

You are correct on all counts. The network has said that Franken will leave the network as of 2/14. He is "investigating the possibility" of a Senate run, but has not decided whether to do that, pending discussions with Minnesota Dem leaders.

As to his replacement (and maybe Thom's as well), I'd look for more Nova M network programming, IMHO. Sirius already has an agreement with them to carry Mike Malloy's nighttime show.

I hope Sirius gets more Nova M Radio programming because of this. What I'm afraid will happen is that Ed Schultz move live noon to 3 and Lynn Samuels gets the 3-6 slot. I can handle Lynn in small doses, but if this happens, I'm going to Michelangelo Signorile on OutQ for my liberal talk fix.

At present, the only host other than Mike Malloy that Nova M has under contract is Dr. Mike Newcomb. He is very good, and I would hope he is added to the Sirius schedule at some point. Nova M is still a very young network, so there is plenty of room for them to expand their lineup in the future.

Now is the time for Sirius to give Mike Feder a daily slot. He's awesome, and I hardly ever get to hear his weekly show. If you haven't heard it, think of the opposite of Lynn Samuels, but with just as much cussing and anger.

There's a new twist to this story: seems XM may decide NOT to run Hartmann in Franken's slot, instead swapping Ed Schultzzzzzzz instead. (And if you believe Schultzzzzzz, it's already a done deal.)

Now I'm really confused.

I thought XM had EXCLUSIVE rights to all AAR shows. Wouldn't running a non-AAR show in the middle of the day -- in what is arguably the most important time slot in talk radio -- kind of blow that exclusivity to Hell?

If it means Hartmann doesn't move on Sirius it's a good thing, but it sure sounds like somebody doens't want to have a contract with somebody else.

I wonder if it means Sirius may get AAR like they did before the exclusivity agreement? It's not so ludicrous; WSJ reported the new AAR owners are only paying something like $4M and change for it, and the guy's capitalized in the billions, so it wouldn't cost them all that much. Add to that C-SPAN leaving, and ... well ...

They never ran Springer's show when he was part of AAR.

Yes, they did run Springer's show -- he was bumped when Sam Seder got the slot and Springer was syndicated, at least until it was cancelled.

NovaM is in talks with XM.

I actually listen to the 12am-3am replay so I hope SIRIUS doesn't get rid of Thom Hartmann!

Mike Feder and Lynn Samuels get along really well. I like how caring Mike Feder is. He asks callers questions about what they do, and gets to know them better. I've email exchanged with him several times. I wish we could hear more of him too.

I think Sirius would be VERY smart if they were to quickly sign on Thom Hartman to his full three hours in the morning (satelliite *exclusive*, since he's not being offered by the other guys at that time) before XM realizes its mistake and tries to put him there instead of Schultz. I just killed my XM subscription today for that and other things that have been frustrating to me with them over there.

Now, if Sirius could make that move, keep Mike Malloy on in the evenings, I'd be ready to come back in a heartbeat.

My guess is that many AAR affiliates will start moving to carrying Schultz in the mornings instead of the afternoons so that they can carry both he and Randi Rhodes live (unfortunately for Thom). But that's a big opportunity for Sirius to be THE complementary progressive talk satellite alternative to terrestrial radio. If I can get the other AAR shows on something like KLSD and fill it out with Thom Hartmann and Mike Malloy from Sirius and perhaps even others at times, that would be almost as good as before when Sirius had two channels.

Someone PLEASE persuade Sirius to carry Thom the full three hours in the morning! I might get an online petition up for this if anyone's interested in helping out. If Sirius gets the message that they'll suddenly get a whole new rash of subs by doing this, perhaps we can make something happen!

Also, anyone else have any feedback on whether the sports preemption rate of channels like this has gotten better or worse over the last year or so since I left? I really wish they'd fix that. That's one area where XM does a better job.

Anything that would get rid of that sandpaper-on-chalkboard-voiced Lynn Samuels would be GREAT in my book.

Hasn't gotten better. Now traffic and weather channels are being pre-empted.
