I have the XM skyfi with the boombox next to my treadmill and every morning I do 45 minutes of jogging. Today I heard some of those wonderful 70s hits that we are talking about -- Grease - Franki Valli; Way of Love - Cher, My Girl Bill - ?; Animal House - Stephen Bishop to name a few.

I sent a letter to Sirius expressing my displeasure with their 70s stream last night at about 9:00 p.m. A half hour later I got a response telling me that because Sirius doesnt have commercials, they listen to the listener instead of the sponsor and that my opinion is important. A one-response fits all type of letter because I am sure the program director and the powers that be at Sirius were not in their offices at 9:00 on a Sunday evening.

If Sirius is generally concerned about their listeners enjoyment and all of us have expressed displeasure with the 70s stream, why dont they ask us for suggestions? How hard is it to reformat their stream to include all the wonderful hits that we have mentioned above?

Let's give the powers that be at Sirius some more time
to work on this.

All of us have sent letters this past week, and posted many
polite messages in this forum area. Remember that it was
a holiday weekend and that many of the Sirius execs aren't
returning to their computers until this morning.

If Sirius is as subscriber supported as it claims it is, I have
no doubt they will consider everything we have pointed out
in this thread. It's only common sense that a 70s channel
should give equal play to all the genres of music from that era.
What else would anyone signing up for Satellite radio expect
from a Totally '70s channel?

There is something else that is really bothering me here....

Sirius is severely butchering the music. I told all of you
the other day how they cut the 5-minute Come Sail Away
song down to under 3 minutes. Billy Joel's Piano Man
was played without the piano introduction. This morning I
was horrified to hear a butchered (and reworked) version of
Chicago's Only The Beginning.

On XM radio, this never happened. XM was very careful to
give respect to the music. They played album versions of all
their songs. In fact, I was amazed to find out that there was
a longer version of Eric Carmen's All By Myself. That
was a gem that I would never have discovered if not for XM Radio.

Sirius really needs to not only rework the content of these
streams, but play the complete versions of the songs as
well.

Let's see if Sirius responds. I think they will.

I've noticed that the decades streams get the radio sanitized versions but if the same song is played on a different stream like The Rock it most likely will be the albumn cut. I noticed this with the Who's "Who Are You" song when played on the Rock Vs 70's. I would vote in favor of Albumn cuts on all streams myself unless there's a good justification.

I agree with you we need to give Sirius time to respond. They have responded before to other complaints coming from forum members, but it seems to take a few weeks, not days.

I am almost ready to take Moody Blues/Nights in White Satin off of SongSeek b/c Totally 70s chops it off where the 'regular' lyrics end, before it gets into the cool classical music.

I noticed this too, like Totally 70's plays the edited version of Jet Airliner and the Rock plays the album version.
I hate the butchering too. Unless they think it's more realistic of the era to play the cut versions of songs. But I doubt that's the real reason.

Default yeah NJRonbo!

NJRonbo, THANKYOU!!!!!!
If you look at my original posting on this subject this is my EXACT complaint! They have turned it into a Classic rock station instead of a 70s pop station which it should be since Sirius already has a pure Classic Rock channel and several that you can hear most of this music on already but nowhere where you can hear the 70s pop.
I used to have XMabout a year ago and I didn't care for that either. Too much mellow stuff and a lot of unfamiliar stuff. Unfortuantely you didn't get to hear Sirius this summer when the 70s station kicked butt. It was incredible! They played almost everything that you and the other posters mentioned.
YOU NEED TO SPEAK UP!!!! PLEASE PLEASE send your comments to Sirius. They told me that they do get forwarded to the person in charge of the station. I doubt if they are reading our bitching here, so get everyone who has an interest in bringing back the pure pop to email Sirius and let them know.
I emailed Joe Clayton directly. I just got a canned response but I am told that it was forwarded to the appropriate person. This WAS my favorite channel. Lets bring it back to where is was.
EMAIL NOW!!!!!!!!!

Default Thanks NJ Ronbo

I see on the other 70s thread that you did in fact send an email to Sirius. Hopefully others will follow our lead. I don't see much support for this current incarnation of the 70s station.
One thing that concerns me is that if Gregg Steele is in charge of this now, as Tulane Jeff indicated in the other thread, that it will remain a Classic Rock station since he was hired to oversee the rock programming.

Wow--52 posts in 3 days. Clearly a nerve has been hit with this thread. Hopefully Sirius will take notice. I don't begrudge them using market research to a point, but those results have to be taken in conjunction with feedback from paying subscribers. Market research has a lot to do with the pitiful state of terrestrial radio--the whole "I'll tell you what you want to listen to, not the other way around" mentality. Does anyone know if the market research Sirius obtains is taken from people who actually subscribe to the service. Or, is it just Joe Blow who has nothing to do that day but attend a focus group session on something he has no personal interest in because they are willing to hand him a check at the end of the session?

This 70s stream has degraded into a "junior" classic rock one. It was much better a few months ago. in the pre Sabo days. Big Dog, listen to your customers not some marketing consultants, someone asked " how many consultants actually subscribe to Sirius?".....any ideas? I bet ZERO!! Thus people who are telling us what we want to hear dont even listen probably!! Dissed again!!

Months ago (don't remember exactly when) I got a survey emailed to me from Sirius regarding their programming, and I answered it. I wonder if this is part of their maket research. They should do it on an ongoing basis.

If 'Totally '70s doesn't revert back to the way
it was, I am pulling the plug on Sirius Radio.

I came from XM Radio hoping for something better with
no commercials.

This is not better. How can you call a channel Totally '70s
when it has nothing to do with the era except playing classic rock
and butchered versions of songs?

I'd rather go back to XM radio at this point and hear the
commercials than continue to listen to classic rock that is
totally unbearable to listen to.

If you are going to base your decision on Sirius based on the programming of one stream over the course of a weekend, then maybe you haven't given it enough time. I think Sirius is trying to evaluate which way to go with some of their streams. Some streams have already improved, and eventually, I know they will straigten out Totally 70's. Also, if you are this unsatisfied with Totally 70's, then you should have sampled the stream online before you jumped in. I know I sampled my 5 most listened to streams online extensively over the course of several weeks, before I subscribed.

The problem with the 70s stream is that they DO NOT do what the 50s, 60s and 80s streams do, that is play all the hits from those decades. You will hear pop, r&b, adult contemporary and country-rock on the other streams. they encompass the musical genre of that decade, why wont Totally, ooops Partial 70s stream 7? Why was this stream singled out NOT to cover all the hits of that decade when the others do? Go figure!!! :\
