Default Totally 70s Sound Quality Stinks!!

Is it just me or has anybody noticed that the sound quality of Totally 70s sucks? To me it sounds just marginally better than AM radio. The problem is that some songs sound OK, but others have poor sound quality. I realize the compression comes into play, but come on now!! Maybe they're trying to achieve an effect by sounding highly compressed like AM radio used to be, but it's unacceptable in this era of digital sound. What's your play on this?

My plan is to redesign Sat Radio from the ground up so we can get that AM quality up to at least 8track quality by the year 2020.

I know you can even hear the quality effect on the 129k online stream. Sounds like some songs are encoded at a low bit rate and other songs sound fine.

Combination of the digitial audio compression for the songs cuts themselves, and audio compression. I do think they are trying to emulate the 70's sound we heard then on our AM radios. It does sound like crap.

Also I think what a lot of it is, is that the original recording on some of these songs isn't that great to start with. I mean, you can remaster the hell out of some of these recordings, and it will only help out marginally. Now if I compare even remastered CD's I have of '70's artists, with newer artists and recordings, it's not even close. You can tell the limitations of the source material.

But yes, it would help if they would up the bitrate a little too.

Default Better Sound and Expanded Playlist?

Since I made the original post, I've noticed that the sound quality on channel 7 has improved a bit. I'd like to think that Sirius actually reads and responds to this message board. I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt that Totally 70s sound quality was lacking. Let's hope it stays improved. It is one of the channels I listen to most often since I grew up in the 70s and 80s. The poor sound quality detracts from my listening pleasure.

I've also noticed that Totally 70s seems to have expanded their playlist over the past few weeks or months. I could be wrong with my theory, but I'll bet they reduced to a cookie-cutter playlist at the beginning late last year because of the Howard Stern converts. Sirius probably wanted them to warm up to the service before expanding the playlists on some of their channels. Am I wrong?

No, you're not wrong. Playlists have been expanding all over Sirius, The Pulse has gotten way better, Starlite is kicking ass lately, and so have several others. I think it's just Sirius is responding to complaints of small playlists compared to XM's. But I don't want to delve into this too much, because it opens up a whole can of worms between the XM fans and Sirius loyalists. And we've got enough threads on that subject already, let's just say I'm very happy with Sirius now, and hope that they don't go as overboard as XM does with playing a lot of obscure stuff. I hope that wasn't the can of worms I heard popping.

I have a feeling this is all 100% guess. Yeah, Sirius just read what you had to say and they upped the sound quality.

I don't buy it. Whatever it was I'm glad it's over with.

I agree that the playlists are getting deeper. I first got XM in the summer of '04 and was amazed at some of the songs that I hadn't heard since I was in junior high. But in a couple of months the playlists on XM got very mainstream. I bought a sirius sportster replay and the boombox to go with it in June of this year. Sirius now reminds me of how XM used to be. I also have an XM myfi. I called XM yesterday to cancel my subscription because just last week I bought a stiletto. When I called XM they told me they would cut my subscription price in half until June if I didn't cancel. So I will try XM for another six months to see if it gets better

I noticed after the channel update, when was that - September perhaps? that Totally 70's really sounded like dump! I listen to it every so often, I thought I remember it sounding better prior to that update, anybody else? I could be wrong though.

Wasn't that big in 70s? He was only the 4th biggest recording act of all the 70s (behind Elton John, Paul McCartney & James Brown). He only had 21 hits on the Billboard Chart for that decade, naww he wasn't that big.......were you even alive in the 70s?
