Post Love (The Beatles album)

Has anyone listened to the "new" Beatles album, just released 11-21-06?

For those who are not aware of this project, it is a soundtrack to the Cirque Du Soleil extravaganza. It features over 30 Beatles songs compiled and remixed. It includes fragments of over 100 Beatles songs.

I love the Beatles, and projects like this one would normally make me nervous. It seems almost sacreligous to mess with their music. But, in this case, George Martin is behind the production, McCartney and Ringo Starr have given the project their blessing, and reviews have been favorable.

I think I'm going to buy this one.

Smile "love" Is Amazing

The CD is everything I think you would expect from George Martin. Only he could have put this together the way he did with so many of his other projects. We had it on yesterday and everyone their loved it. A friend of the family just got back from Las Vegas and saw the show, she said that the CD lived up to the performance. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I only wish that John and George were alive to see it.

The DVD which comes as part of the "Special Edition" for about $5 more, is terrific. It's the same as the CD, but in surround (DD 5.1 and DTS). Has about 10 minutes more music too. It's wild to hear it in surround and DTS. Great mixes by Sir George Martin and son Giles.

What is the replay value of the CD? I've thought about buying it, but it seems like something that would grow stale pretty quick.

Some people have likened it to the newest generation of 'Stars On 45', but I think that this production is soooo much better than that. The only part during 'Love' that felt like a 'Stars On' medley was during the 'Drive My Car/The Word/What You're Doing' section. My favorite part was the 'Strawberry Fields/Piggies/Hello Goodbye' section. I also really liked 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' although a fair number of songs didn't get the true mash up production, some of the songs just have an edited/cleaner'alternative mix to them.

I hope this latest cd opens up the doors for a remixing of the fabs entire catalog because if nothing else, 'Love' sounds like the Beatles music you've never heard before. Just astonishing sound.

By the way deedee, not to rain on your parade, but George Martin isn't the only one out there who could have done this...there are hundreds of producers out in the world working on mash ups, even Beatles mash ups...and a good number of them are high quality. The difference with 'Love' is that George Martin AND HIS SON were working from the original source, not bootleged tapes and cd's.

I believe most of what George and son did was commissioned from the Cirque de Soliel people, that's why a lot of the songs you hear on the CD aren't done strictly as mash ups.

Here's to an updated remixing of the Beatles catalog...SOON.

To be honest with you I know nothing about what "mash ups" is. I only know that if Sir George Martin along with his son did something with the Beatles music, he did it his way.

I just loved what I heard on the CD and saw on TV when they were promoting it just before it opened, along with what my friend who was lucky to have seen the show had to say about it.

Thank you for your info.

No, it isn't, not exactly. Some of the songs feature only a slight tweaking of sound, maybe an instrument is higher in the mix or the vocals or backing vocals are clearer, that sort of thing. Sometimes the songs are edited down by a verse, but most importantly the sound, the overall sound is brilliant.

Some of what they do is what is now commonly refered to as mashing, or mash ups. What that means is, they take at least two different sound sources to create a new track, sort of a new way to hear old songs, if you will. I actually wish they did MORE mashing, but that's my opinion.

There are some real highlights and some where I wonder what the reason for its inclusion is, probably something to do with the show in Vegas. If you have a great sound system this is a must purchase, if you're a big Beatles fan, well, just add it to the collection, other than that I don't know how many times you'll be playing this record over playing almost ANY other Beatles record.

I would say it's more of a re-mix album sprinked with a lot of of mashing. It's great mainly because, well, it's The Beatles...."I Am The Walrus" is almost identical to the original and some of the songs end too quickly. I definitely think the highlight is "Within You Without You". This track stands out for me because while I liked the original, it was never one of my favorite Beatles songs...yet mixing the vocals with the backing track of "Tomorrow Never Knows" gives it new life and actually makes it a much better song.

Didn't know this was out there - maybe this will go on my Christmas list!

As far as the producer, it's not that other producers couldn't match George Martin's skill, it's just that George Martin is the only one who ought to be allowed to work the Beatles' recordings due to his history with the fab 4. He was there with the boys in the studio and knows how John, Paul, Ringo, and George would want these mixes to sound.

After listening to 'Love' I would extend the offer, but I really don't think that his ears are the sole reason the latest release sounds so good. But what the hell, it couldn't hurt. Whateve was done on 'Love' should be redone again for the catalog. The 'Yellow Submarine' songtrack was a step in the right direction, the work on 'Love' is a step beyond that...the next step is reworking their ENTIRE catalog.

Thumbs up

I've been listening to Love these last few days. I really like it. The sound quality is great. I agree they could have gone further and changed more things around. Of course, it will never take the place of the original albums, but I appreciate it for what it is.

Among the highlights for me: the beginning of "Octopus's Garden" mixed with "Good Night"; the beginning of track 2, "Get Back"; and the "Strawberry Fields Forever" track.

I've also probably listened to "Within You Without You" more on this album in a week than in all the years I've had Sgt. Pepper.

Nicely summarized ... I'm listening to the DVD right now on my home theatre system. Received "Love" as a gift from my daughter yesterday -- we had to celebrate early because of work schedules.

What a tremendous production! Beatles purists may have a problem with it, but I absolutely love "Love."
