My take on what changed is first, Mel Karmazin was hired as CEO, and then Howard Stern was hired. This changed the entire direction of Sirius' marketing and they now regard the former Folktown fans as dispensible.

Why not just take one of their 24/7 Artist Only Channels and at least give us an automated Folk Format; artists like Jackson Browne or Springsteen even have many cuts which could easily fit that format. The question arises, are people who like folk don't like Stern? Hey, for the most part, I listen to him on and off, Martha's another story.

How's good ole New Hampshire? Lived there for a while, then Maine and now SOCAL, that's the TV Biz, in order to move up, one must move out.

Here's to Joni Mitchell, Dylan, Paxton, Rush and the rest of the crew. Send Lobster, Please. The food out here stinks...s2s

What you are saying just makes too much sense. Such a channel could be automated most of the time, with announcers for specialty programs only.

Interesting that you are in the TV business also. I'm a master control operator in Boston, been at the same station for 23 years.

Larry, don't tell me you you work for BZ? I was there from '78-'80 and then moved to San Diego. I remember going to Ken's after the 11. Is Buzzy's still around. You know, the grease pit near the Garden or should I say The Fleet Center...KenG

I like the Coffeehouse but don't understand why they repeat so many of the same artist. Today alone (thru 9:30PM, so there will probably be more of some of these!) they played:

Coldplay -10 times
David Gray - 10 times
Shawn Colvin - 9 times
Indigo Girls - 9 times
Tracy Chapman - 8 times
Harry Connick, Jr - 8 times
Jack Johnson - 7 times
Bob Dylan - 7 times
Dave Matthews - 6 times

Several artists were played 3, 4 or 5 times. These 9 artists represent 23% of the day's playlist.

I don't understand this - it is satellite; they are restricted only by themselves.

I have written to Sirius but my guess is that E-mails fall into the abyss, yielding only a canned reply.

Too bad, this COULD be a great channel. Instead it is OK, but being run into the ground.

You are correct. This is why I have totally removed Coffeehouse form my
presets. Countless emails to Sirius have been fruitless.
I have no idea what their indentions are. They have a chance to be unique and they end up playing the same old crap.
I gave up on the emails.
I heard The Globe is coming back this weekend, finally dumping the All Stones All The Time thing. Could this be a sign that they're finally listening to us ? Time will tell, but it may be too late.

I agree! I just got Sirius about 5 days ago. I have been with XM for 2 1/2 years (still am) and I think the variety on The Loft is far superior. I can't figure out why Connick and Buble are even on a channel that should be focused on singer-songwriter. Lots of repetition too. I find myself listening to Sirius Disorder more than the Coffeehouse.

I was just about to post that I thought this channel had improved recently... hearing more acoustic stuff.

But I just tuned in and the SECOND song that came on was Tracy Chapman.

Looks like it's still the "Indigo Girls/Tracy Chapmen Channel".

Funny, I was thinking that on the way in. I have definitely heard a difference, especially artists I haven't heard on there and more mew music and less jazz. Yes, still a lot of their "favorites", but a little better, I think.

It is a bit better, but I still wonder: "who the hell is Coldplay, and why do they get played so much?"

There does seem to be an ever so slight change to the line up.

All the regulars are still there, Coldplay, the In-dah-got-ta-go Girls, David Gray etc...but I think this channel might be in a tweeking mode. Might be a good idea to submit song requests to point them in the right direction.

Think we'll ever hear John Prine or Fred Eaglesmith or Cheryl Wheeler or Mark Erelli or Ry Cooder or Hot Club Of Cowtown here ?

Hopin so.........

They do play John Prine, but I don't think I've heard the others.

Default THE COFFEE HOUSE

I listened a lot today, and things are definitely a changin.
Still too much repetition, but I still think someone is tweaking it. I just know it.
I heard Greg Brown, KD Lang, David Wilcox. Found myself NOT hitting the button, but then Dave Mathews came on and I quickly jumped over to Outlaw Country where things are really hoppin. Mojo Nixon is out of his mind and that's just fine with me. He plays such good shit ! (that was a compliment). From there it was on to Disorder where it's always a good time, then back to Coffeehouse and the In-da-gotta-go-girls were droaning on so it was over to Margittaville, groving on some good ol' Buffett tunes...then I arrived at Costo and spent way too much money.......

Is it illegal (or immoral) to quote yourself?

Anyway, I have to agree with myself and gleff and others... I think they're definitely tweeking it and it is, in fact, improving. Gives me a little hope that Sirius does in fact work on their channels in between lineup changes. The pessimist in me thought that they just played their channels as programmed until the eventual channel lineup change. But apparently there are real humans in there making real decisions! Let's hope it continues.

I'd love to hear some J.Prine, gleff!

I'm still hearing a tremendous amount of repetition, and the variety is still very limited. I thought it had improved, but I'm beginning to think it was more of wishful thinking on my part. Such a tiny list of artists it's completely baffling to me for satellite radio. It's like someone's MP3 player playing over and over unattended. So Sad !
