Hey, waitasec... we have every right to be pissed off. Sirius was out selling units at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival at the END OF JULY. Meg Griffin and The Kennedys were out there. I know that quite a few people bought their units there because that was a place they could go and actually listen to the music.

This is a slap in the face to those people.

Note the big Sirius ad from Falcon Ridge 2004. In 2005, ONLY Sirius had a banner there. (Sorry, I don't have my pictures done yet).

We paid for one thing, and just got less than we paid for.

I like this channel for the simple fact that there are no annoying punky under-paid sirius DJ's. Don't get me wrong I like DJ's + station calls, but it's nice to have a channel without them.

This is a great 8-12AM at the office channel. Can't really see listening to it any other time of the day though.

I heard lyle lovett yesterday and today - so I'm not sure how deep the playlist is yet. It would be nice if it stuck to mainly acustic since it's quite pleasing to the ear especially with all the frequencies sirius cuts out during the ripping process for streaming.

I listened for a little while yesterday and liked it. I listened for a few hours this morning and don't like it at all. I heard lots of jazz type music, and other that I can't place, but very little acoustic. It's in no way a replacement for Folktown and it's like no coffee house that I've ever been in

Thank God for this stream - where else can you hear Jack Johnson, Sheryl Crow, Dave Matthews Band, Gavin Degraw and Coldplay?
The only trouble is, I don't think it's quite bland enough.

OK, I understand some people like this stream, that is fine. But, it’s not a good replacement for Folktown, which many people enjoyed. Sirius advertised and sold radios at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, and then they cancel folk music. Duh!

Sirius is not going to remove a channel that has a lot of listeners. They probably made a mistake advertising at this folk festival because by removing folktown it shows that they did not get the subscriptions or listeners they wanted from it.

Funniest comment I've heard all week. I tend to agree, unfortunately. This is no alternative to The Loft.

Default COFFEE HOUSE VS FOLK TOWN

OK, I've been listeneing to Coffee House for 2 days now (off and on) and really can't understand what Sirius's intentions were.

This is in no way even close to Folk music, let alone acoustic.

Elton John was played yesterday ??? HELLO ?!?!?

Where are the singer song writers they promised us ?

Sirius Disorder is the closest replacement for Folk Town and like someone else stated here, too much rock interruption.

And what's with all the jazz ?

I just don't get it. But what I am getting is the XM Roady this weekend, I'll be canceling one of my Sirius subscriptions for sure. I just can decide if I should get the Roady or the more expensive hand held device which seems to come with everything one would need for the car/home and running.....sounds really cool and I'll have my Folk music once again. :\

I don't know that this is true. How does Sirius track listenership? I know they do focus groups, but I don't know how often the survey their existing subscribers. Clearly, there are more people who listen to pop than folk. However, I'm not sure that one more hits-based channel (which plays music that thousands of FM stations play, and that millions of people own on MP3/CD) is going to net more subscribers than a genre that is more ecclectic, but has fewer alternative for fans who want to listent to it.

I haven't listened that much so far, but from what I've heard, I like it. "Super Shuffle" and "Spa 73" are my two favorites of the new channels, but I can also see giving "the Coffeehouse" a listen every now and then as well.
I just don't get why so many "Folktown" fans are slamming this channel and comparing the two. I think it's kind of like apples and oranges. This isn't "Folktown" and it's not meant to be a replacement for it. It is simply a whole new channel on its' own. If you hate that "Folktown" is gone that's fine, but why slam "the Coffeehouse" because of it anymore than you would any of the other new channels. Did Sirius say this was a replacement for "Folktown"? If so, I never heard that. I think that "the CoffeeHouse" is simply a brand new channel with a brand new format that isn't related to "Folktown" at all. (Heck it isn't even in the same category since it's in rock and Folktown was in Country). Anyway, all I know is I never listened to "FolkTown", but I can see myself listening to "the CoffeeHouse" sometimes, so personally, I'm happy. But I'm most happy about "SuperShuffle" and "Spa 73". Those are awesome.

The majority of people I know get sirius or xm to get the music you hear on FM, but without the commericals. I thought that was the purpose of satellite radio, but I guess I must be wrong.

Default REPLACMENT

Yes, read the hype on Coffee Town replacing Folk Town. They advertised it would feature many of the same artists as Folk Town. Ain't heard ONE yet !

This is why we are all so upset, Siruis misled, and then pulled the rug out from under us. They offer no alternatate.

Folk music is no longer found on any Sirius stream (well maybe once in a great while on Disorder).

This is what made Sirius so unique for me, the Folk thing...now it's just like listening to broadcast radio (with the exception of Spa and Disorder).

It depends. Personally, I would like satellite radio to consist of both (1) music commonly heard on FM stations without commercials, but (2) more importantly (to me), a selection of channels where you can hear music that is unavailable anywhere else. An example of the former is Classic Rewind, and an example of the latter is Sirius Disorder. I think Folktown fell in the second category, and the fact that it is gone is a shame. The objection to Coffee House is that it is duplicative of numerous other stations--why do need yet another station that plays stuff you can already hear on Rewind, Margaritaville, Bridge, etc.? That's a good question. Not to say that Coffee House is a bad or unworthy station (I can imagine myself listening to it for stretches of time), but the impression is that Folktown got the axe for Coffee House. So, if you are in my boat, you see that as a bad trade-off. Which is also why I have XM.

They most certainly did say this!

From their website:

• The music you love on Folk Town // Ch. 38 will be heard on The Coffee House // Ch. 30 and SIRIUS Disorder // Ch. 24

Default Miss Folk Town

I'm assuming the previous writer had tongue firmly planted in cheek when he referred to sat-radio only being a commercial free terrestrial-radio.

One pretext for satellite radio is that it be an alternative to regular radio.

One of the strong points, as discussed by a Sirius executive a few years ago was that a genre of music that may not be viable for a station with limited transition capabilities becomes viable when beamed nationwide.

I don't know how they came to the decision to drop the folk station, I'd think some of the other genres like blue-grass, blues or reggae might have similar listener numbers.

Coffee House is OK but the times I listened to it, it's been MTV-Unplugged instead of the singer song writers I was expecting. Hopefully it's just growing pains and more will get mixed in.

I remember when Folktown first came out it was pretty much stuck in the 60s. Over time it branched out and became more and more current.

I'm looking forward to the Canadian stations, maybe then we'll get a folk station again.

Mike
