The whole "Elvis is a racist" thing that was referred in the Public Enemy lyric quoted above is an urban legend. Check Snopes, I think it's there. Elvis allegedly said once, "n*ggers aren't worth anything but shining my shoes." Everybody associated with Elvis has said he would never say such a thing.

You are correct. It is an urban legend going back many years. Elvis himself denied it long ago. It's just some crap a jealous Elvis-hater made up.

Renaissance Man is the official "I got Elvis' back" dude. Personally I don't much care for Elvis. He was a cool icon back in the day. Don't get me wrong, I am just not a huge fan of his tunes. But I could swear I have heard him twang out more than a few gospel tunes. If that's not Christian than I am confused. Not sure about the concern of what Elvis is or was or how he died. Bon Scott died in his own care slash puke and wasn't a Christian, so what?

I will say that I think Revolution is much harder that Octane 90% of the time. Like others, when an extremely preachy song comes on I will usually change the channel. It's not because I'm offended, it's just not my belief so I don't get mad about it.

The good news is that most of these bands have realized that they can appeal to a broader audience by NOT being overtly religious. I think whoever programs the channel does a great job so far because Christians and non-Christians alike seem to agree the music rocks.
That is EXACTLY why I started this thread and I am betting, thanks to a few that are concerned with my choice of forum selection, Revolution is getting a listen to those who would have never touched it. In fact if it wasn't for it being added to the new line up I probably would have always skipped it.

Elvis sang a lot of gospel tunes. "How Great Thou Art" I believe even won a Grammy for best gospel song at one point. I loathe that song, by the way. Not because of any anti-Christian sentiment, but I just think the song blows. And yes, I know it's an old church standard.

Elvis Presley was a pretty creepy dude (IMO). He was always talking about his mother in a very disturbing way. He used to talk about rubbing that cantelope-sized growth on the back of her neck and named it something like "Mubby" or "Nubby". He had a penchant for all things fried food. Ever heard of "The Elvis Presley Monte Cristo Sandwich"??? It was peanut butter & banana, deep-fried. Disgusting! He was really into under-aged girls. Anyone remember how old Precilla was when they got married? Something like 14 or 15. Just creepy. I'm not going to bash his music, because a lot of it is very good. He was a really good singer, and wrote some great songs that laid the foundation for the way a lot of rock songs are still written today. I just have a hard time seperating Elvis the performer with Elvis the man.

Actually, she was about three weeks shy of her 22nd birthday when they got married.

I think BatShiette is thinking of Jerry Lee Lewis. His wife was a girl. Hee Haw style.

You could be right; she was 21 when they married. But, I guaran-damn-tee you that she was like 15 when she met Elvis and they were "dating". It's just creepy.

When they met, she was 14, he was 24. They didn't start "dating" until she was 16, and married when she was 21. This according to Priscilla in her book, Elvis and Me.

Regardless of how old Pricilla was, or how old he was, he was still a weird guy, but not necessarily a bad guy. If you ever go to Graceland, you'll see some weird shit. Only a weirdo would have some of the stuff in his house that he had.

Should I ever listen to Revolution, I'll keep the Peart test in mind:

Quote:
A very fine line meander[s] grayly between the sincerity and integrity of imbuing your art with convictions, and preaching from an inappropriate pulpit, like movie stars using their celebrity to spread their political opinions -- though at least there you [know] what you['re] getting. Perhaps I would define propaganda as a political or religious message hidden in something that purports to be art for its own sake... (it is telling that the word "propaganda" is derived from a committee of cardinals in the Catholic church, the congregatio de propaganda fide, the congrengation for propagating the faith).

I find myself on a... kind of thin ice here, or at the very least in a glass house, when I contemplate songs I've written like "Free Will", "The Big Wheel", and many more, that contained a kind of religious message, even though it was patently anti-religion.
-- Travelling Music: The Soundtrack to My Life and Times

ie... once the line is crossed where the performer has some desire to save you, I'm out of there...

I heard Scott Stapp this weekend on Octane. Guess they need to get their asses over to the "Christian" category. Joke, couldn't resist.

Scott was the lead singer for Creed who is releasing a new solo album. Which sounds EXACTLY like Creed.
